How Structure and Approach can Shape your 2021/22 FPL Season

Hello! The 2021/22 FPL season is officially upon us. With the player prices being released earlier this week we can start to plan our first drafts and have a think about what players we would like. But more importantly, what structure our team should have. In this article, I will discuss my usual FPL team structure and how I approach FPL. After finishing 493rd in the world last season I am back and ready to smash another FPL season!

Team structure for the 2021/22 FPL Season

Having a team structure is more important in FPL than people realise. Keeping an organised structure can help build foundations of a good team and keep you on the right track to ensure that no major transfers are needed. There are many different team structures, ensuring you pick a structure and stick to it could be the key to having a successful season. A few structures are as follows: the midfield premiums structure, the big at the back structure, the all-out attack structure and a flexible structure. All have their own benefits and drawbacks. Last season was a crazy and unpredictable season with the covid pandemic causing havoc on fixtures, therefore a flexible structure was ideal. But with this coming season we are hopefully going to be back to some normality.

So, what structure will I be adopting this season? What approach will I be taking? And who makes my first draft team?

I will be using the midfield premium’s structure. Let’s go through my first draft and see why I have adopted this strategy.

Goalkepeers

2021/22 FPL Season ~ Goalkeeper to target ~ Sanchez

First up, goalkeepers, I currently have Sanchez and Dubravka, two 4.5mil keepers. I like having cheap keepers who I know will start every week. This way I can decide who I think will score the most points on each given week and start them. This also frees up funds for the rest of my team.

Defenders

2021/22 FPL Season ~ Defender to target ~ TAA

In defense I have one premium in Trent Alexander-Arnold, the other four defender slots have gone to 4.5 million options. I will be using these 4 cheap defenders to rotate with each other to ensure I have at least 2 of them with good fixtures to start in my team alongside TAA. I will be hoping to play a 3 back formation most weeks so am saving money at the back.

Midfielders

2021/22 FPL Season ~ Midfielder to target ~ Mo Salah

In midfield is where I am spending a lot of my money. Having two premiums is a must for me and I have chosen Salah and Bruno. Both have a history of scoring big FPL points and will most likely be my captains most weeks. Alongside the two big hitters, I have selected Grealish. Another main man for his club and someone else I want in my team every week. My fourth midfielder is Raphinha, I think he offers great value and will also be a mainstay in my midfield. My last spot goes to Bissouma, at 4.5 mil he enables me to have the funds to afford my other four main midfielders while he himself will play every game so is an option if ever needed.

Forwards

2021/22 FPL Season ~ Ivan Toney striker to target

Lastly, my forwards. I have opted against a premium forward, instead, I have picked three forwards who I know will play and have a history of scoring goals. Calvert-Lewin, Watkins, and Toney all impressed last season at their clubs and I am backing them to have another successful season. Overall, I believe my team has all the bases covered, premium captaincy options, forwards that will score goals, and a defense that can be relied upon. If you are a fan of my structure and first draft, then please do let me know or if you are not, please let me know how you think I can improve it. So, now my team and structure are in place, what are the key approaches I will take to help me have a successful season?

Approach for 2021/22 FPL Season

Always try to have the best captain option by planning weeks in advance. Identifying who you want to captain each week and ensuring you have that player is key as they will most likely be highly owned and you could lose ground if you don’t own them. For me, Salah is likely to be my captain in at least 3 of the opening 5 game weeks so he is a must-own in my team.

Stick to premium captaincy. The premium players cost the most because they are the most reliable to score you points. Sometimes going for a differential or a budget captain does have a big upside but if you want consistent captaincy success, pick your favorite premiums, and stick to them.

Avoid unnecessary hits. This is a key one for me, you can’t have the perfect team every single week. Instead of taking hits to try to improve your team just stick with your current team, in most cases it will outscore your transfers. So, unless you are taking a hit for a captaincy option or are confident of that player helping you in a 3+ week period then avoid that hit!
