FPL GW14 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

Let’s dive right into it. We will start with the first one.

1) Is it okay to sell Son Heung-min ahead of FPL GW14?

Son Heung-min recorded his 3rd consecutive blank last week, and FPL managers are losing patience with him. There is no doubt Tottenham’s main creativity has come from James Maddison. And with him being out till early January, Son has not been getting the usual service and help.

Son was unlucky not to get anything against Villa’s higher defensive line. Tottenham next faces Man City, who also plays a high line, and Son has potential in this game. Managers are looking at Bukayo Saka as a potential replacement, but I am unconvinced.

Yes, Saka has 4 assists in his last 5 games, but he has looked a bit off, not carrying much goal threat and may/may not be on penalties. One thing that works for Saka is his next two fixtures. Arsenal faces Wolves and Luton in the next two compared to Spurs, who have Man City and West Ham.

Despite this, Son is better than Saka and other midfield alternatives. I am not thinking of selling him anytime soon. He is still the best midfield option after Salah, and despite the trickier fixtures coming up, I am keeping him.

2) Who are the best Eze/Bowen/Maddison replacements?

Jarrod Bowen and James Maddison both have flags on them at the moment. Bowen may/may not play this week, but Maddison is out until early January.

Jarrod, of course, had an injury. I’ll pick up with the medical team and we’ll see later this afternoon(Friday) – David Moyes

FPL managers looking for potential replacements can look at Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The attacker has some really good fixtures with Luton, Brighton, Sheffield Utd and Aston Villa in the next 4 matches. All opponents are leaky at the back, and there is a good potential for points here.

Note: Mbeumo has a blank in GW18, so you may need to depend on your bench or take him out to help you field a playing XI.

If you already own Mbeumo, you can get Raheem Sterling (£7m) from Chelsea. Yes, they have Brighton and Man Utd in the next two, but both can concede, and the Blues run from GW16 to 21 is the best in the league. Sterling has scored twice in the last 2 games, and there is a case to be made here.

If Bowen is out this week and you are looking to replace him, you can even get in his teammate Mohammed Kudus from West Ham. Kudus has 2 double-digit hauls in the last 3 games and is owned by less than 3% of FPL managers.

Eze and Mitoma aren’t great picks for me. Eze picked up a knock against Luton and may be out for a while now. Mitoma is okay, as he started midweek in the Europa League, but his general performances haven’t been that great, and better alternatives are available.

You can even go cheaper with Anthony Gordon from Newcastle or even Cole Palmer from Chelsea. Gordon already has 10 attacking returns for the season. On the other hand, Palmer has only blanked twice in the last 7 games. Both are at slightly different price points, Palmer being much cheaper. You can save money with one of these picks while having the flexibility to make upgrades elsewhere on the pitch.

3) Which are the best Arsenal players to target?

Which are the best Arsenal players to target?

Arsenal has the best defence in the league right now, and with a good run of fixtures from now till GW22, it may be worth investing in one or even two defensive picks.

David Raya didn’t start in GW13, but he can be a great ‘Goalkeeper’ pick from Arsenal if we get some information about him starting before the GW14 deadline. If you are looking for a goalkeeper replacement, Raya is a great pick to target.

William Saliba is the most nailed pick in defense but is £5.5m. Ben White (£5.7m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.1m) are costing more than £5m and budgets may be tight. You can get in Gabriel at £4.9m if you want to go cheaper. He is expected to be nailed in the Arsenal backline and is a good pick.

Bukayo Saka has been Arsenal’s best FPL pick this season in midfield. He is 3rd overall for FPL points and xGI among all MIDs. His returns have not been huge, but he has only blanked thrice this season.

If you already have Saka, double up on the Arsenal midfield with Martinelli may not be the ideal strategy. Arsenal aren’t scoring very heavily and with better alternatives available, I would rather double up on the defence.

Hedging your bets on a 2nd Arsenal attacker also depends on Arteta’s press conference before the deadline. Gabriel Jesus and Ødegaard are expected to continue their returns in the playing XI and may soon become options. It’s better to wait, watch, and closely monitor their progress.

Coming to Nketiah, it’s a tricky hold if you have him. He may not start this week, and if you have an easy transfer to make, you can sell him this week. Like Saka, if there is some concrete info on him getting a start, you hold him for GW14. Otherwise, just sell for Nunez/Isak or any budget 3rd striker.

4) What to do with FPL picks from Aston Villa Ahead of FPL GW14?

What to do with FPL picks from Aston Villa Ahead of FPL GW14?

In recent games, many FPL managers have enjoyed consistent returns from Aston Villa players. But with fixtures getting tougher and some players not delivering the same returns, managers are looking for exit routes.

If you own Matty Cash, there is a case to be made to sell him soon, if not this week. He only lasted 45 minutes in GW13 and has just provided 1 clean sheet in the last 6 games with no attacking returns. This week, he faces Bournemouth, so there is potential for attacking returns. I am not expecting a clean sheet, though. Villa is quite leaky at the back as they play attacking with a higher defensive line.

If there are other priority transfers this week, I suggest holding Cash. In case of selling, he can be sold for one of the Arsenal/Chelsea defenders next week. You can even get Porro from Spurs, who has looked quite attacking since Maddison’s absence.

Moussa Diaby has a similar story here. He has just returned in 2 of the last 6 fixtures, and Bryan Mbeumo is a ready replacement for Diaby. Mbeumo is 2nd for xGI and 4th for FPL points among all MIDs, and he is a great player to buy this week. To me, this is a higher-priority transfer than Cash in GW14.

Watkins was not in the squad today for the European game. Unai Emery on Ollie Watkins fitness/availability/injury: “He’s going to be a doubt for Sunday. “He’s not completely unavailable for Sunday. We are going to wait for tomorrow [Saturday] and see if we can take a risk with him or not. We will see how he feels about facing the demands in 90 minutes we are going to face on Sunday.”

Ollie Watkins is still a decent hold if he’s fit. However, there’s an injury concern around him and he missed out on the UECL game. Watchout for early team news and see if he’s starting or not, if he’s out you can move him for Darwin/Isak.

5) Who are the best strikers to own ahead of FPL GW14?

Who are the best strikers to own ahead of FPL GW14?

This is with the assumption that you own Haaland and are looking at the 2nd and 3rd striker positions. The picks that are worth investing in at the moment are Darwin Núñez and Alexander Isak.

Callum Wilson on his injury issues and return date: “Things are going good, I feel good. I feel fit and strong. We’re moving outside and we’re getting closer.” “I’ll soon be dipping back into training but it’s on the physio’s say-so. The sooner the better because Alex (Isak) is a product of me and I’m a product of him for my recent injury struggles.” “I think I need to get back as soon as possible to help him out, to share the load because there’s a lot of demand on the players at the moment.”

Liverpool’s Nunez is a great option in attack. The biggest issue with Nunez has always been his minutes. Still, with Jota injured, I expect him to be a regular feature in the Liverpool playing XI. He always gets big chances, and there is a sense of excitement when he is one of the forwards in your FPL team. The next three games are good, too. (FUL, SHU, CRY). If you want to take a bit of a risk, I believe he is a great 2nd striker option.

The alternative is Alexander Isak from Newcastle. He is part of one of the best attacks in the league, and with Wilson out because of a hamstring injury, Isak’s minutes are pretty much locked. He will be Newcastle’s leading man in attack and fixtures till GW19, which also looks excellent.

If you are looking to upgrade your 3rd striker, you can look at Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea. The Chelsea no9 is expected to start most games and has scored 4 goals in his last 3 games. If money is an issue, you can even go for Joao Pedro from Brighton. Minutes with him are still a bit tricky to call, but he is definitely on penalties for Brighton and only costs £5.3m for the upgrade.

Chris Wood is a good budget option with the long-term injury to Awoniyi, Forest also have decent fixtures.

Gabriel Jesus is on my watchlist for now. I’d sell players like Alvarez or even Nketiah, as game time may become an issue for both, especially during this busy festive period of December.

That will be all from my side for this week! I wish you all the best for FPL Gameweek 14, and I will see you all next week.
