FPL Gameweek 14 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold & Sell

Out of the Top 25 Scorers of the last GW, only Saka had an ownership of greater than 15%. That’s the kind of GW we had. So worry not if your team didn’t perform as per expectation. December is upon us with a crazily congested fixture line-up. Lots of planning to do for us, managers.

So, let’s start with our BUY-HOLD-SELL article for FPL Gameweek 14, sponsored by…. Well, nobody. We are poor, but you can help here if you want 😊

FPL GW 14 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) – MID, Liverpool – 48.5% TSB

FPL GW 14 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY ~ Mohamed Salah

In GW14, Salah faces Fulham at home who has not kept a Clean Sheet in the league for the last two months. This season, Fulham defence ranks

  • 16th for xG Conceded
  • 16th for Big Chances Conceded
  • 17th for xGNP Conceded
  • 17th for Shots on Target Conceded
  • 17th for Big Chances Conceded

Mr. FPL has blanked only twice this season (once against Luton, much to the frustration of his owners and captainers that GW). Salah has been clinical this season (tell me something new) but he has been even more ruthless at home

Hence, the Egyptian Pharaoh is a Top Buy this week

Bryan Mbeumo (£7.0m) – MID, Brentford – 27.4% TSB

Among midfielders, Mbeumo ranks

  • 2nd for xG
  • 2nd for xGNP
  • 2nd for xG Open Play
  • 2nd for xA
  • 2nd for xGI
  • 2nd for Big Chances
  • 3rd for Shots
  • 3rd for Shots on Target
  • 3rd for Shots in the Box
  • 3rd for Successful Crosses

He faces Luton at home, who are ranked

  • 19th for Shots Conceded
  • 19th for Shots in the Box Conceded
  • 19th for xG Conceded
  • 19th for xGNP Conceded
  • 20th for Clean Sheets
  • 20th for Big Chances Conceded
  • 20th for Shots from Set Pieces Conceded

The last metric is important as Mbeumo is Brentford’s leading man for penalties, free kicks, and corners

Even beyond this GW, Brentford has a mouth-watering fixture run, despite blanking in GW18

Go for Mbeumo to have the early edge over your mini-league rivals.

FPL GW 14 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD

Bukayo Saka (£8.8m) – MID, Arsenal – 53.6% TSB

FPL GW 14 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD ~ Bukayo Saka

Ever since his comeback post missing the game against Man City, Saka’s underlying stats have been quite shocking to be honest

GW12BUR (H)0.15
GW11NEW (A)0.02
GW10SHU (H)0.00

In fact, during this period, Saka is not in the Top 20 FPL point scorers. So the frustration of Saka owners is understandable as he is heavy on the pocket.

However, if you slice the data, a different picture emerges. Saka faces Wolves at home. Saka has not blanked at home so far this season. He is also in a rich vein of form having 7 goal contributions in 5 UCL games, more than anyone else in UCL this season.

Wolves on the other hand has not kept a Clean Sheet post GW3, conceding 8 goals in the last 4 games.

So, HOLD your emotions and HOLD Saka. For the next 2 GWs, Arsenal’s fixtures are ranked 1st (easiest) in FDR as they face Wolves (H) and Luton (A)

Kieran Trippier (£7.0m) – DEF, Newcastle – 49.6% TSB

FPL GW 14 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD ~ Kieran Trippier

Two consecutive blanks have led more than 57,000 managers to sell Trippier. However, despite the injuries, Newcastle’s defence is still elite. They almost held PSG goalless in the midweek UCL game. In the league so far, Newcastle’s defence ranks (lesser the better)

  • 1st for Big Chances Conceded
  • 2nd for Clean Sheets
  • 3rd for xG Conceded
  • 3rd for xGNP Conceded

Needless to say Trippier is the talisman of not just the Newcastle defence but also of the Newcastle team as well. He is the highest-scoring defender by quite a distance. Among defenders, he ranks

  • 1st for Big Chances Created
  • 1st for Final 3rd Passes
  • 1st for Crosses
  • 1st for Key Passes
  • 1st for xA
  • 1st for Assists
  • 1st for Corners Taken
  • 1st for Free Kicks into the Box

The last two metrics are of key importance as Trippier faces Man Utd at home this GW – a team which ranks 19th for shots from set pieces conceded. So Trippier has the potential to haul at both ends, given Man Utd’s struggle to score goals.

Lastly and most importantly, Newcastle are ranked 1st for FDR between GW 14-19

So HOLD Trippier

FPL GW 14 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL

Julián Álvarez (£7.1m) – FWD, Man City Villa – 30.7% TSB

FPL GW 14 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL ~ Julián Álvarez

Álvarez has been a disappointment ever since GW8

The Decline of ÁlvarezGW 1-7GW 8-13

Deep diving into what might have led to this decline throws up a picture that his role has possibly changed a little

In this period (GW 8-13), among his teammates, cheaper players like Doku and Bernardo have outscored him. If we take only MFs and FWDs, more than 30 players have scored more FPL points than the young Argentine.

So it’s best to sell Álvarez and look at someone like an Isak (same price) or Solanke (cheaper alternative).

Eberechi Eze (£6.2m) – MID, Crystal Palace – 5.3% TSB

FPL GW 14 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL ~ Eberechi Eze

Eze bagged an assist and a goal after his comeback from injury. But in arguably the most attractive fixture against Luton, he suffered another injury. Palace fear the forward could be out for the rest of the year. It’s advisable not to keep hold of someone with that price tag in the busy Christmas period. There are alternatives everywhere at that price point – Bryan Mbeumo, Moussa Diaby, Bernardo Silva, Cole Palmer etc. with good fixtures or good form or both.
