As FPL Gameweek 1 approaches closer, managers are looking to lock in their FPL GW1 drafts. However, some may miss out on FPL players they must have in their teams for FPL gameweek 1, and hence to help them in this article, I will look at five must own FPL players you must have for the first gameweek of the 2023/24 FPL Season.

Five FPL Players you must have for FPL GW1
Erling Haaland, £14.0 Million, TSB: 86.3%
I will start this article off by talking about the most-owned pick for the season, Erling Haaland. If you didn’t already know, Haaland is an FPL must-have for the season. He has been prices £14.0 Million this season, only the 4th time a player has been priced at 14.0 Million in FPL History
The Norwegian averaged 7.8 points per match last season as he broke the premier league record by scoring 36 goals and providing 9 assists in only 33 starts. He had an xGI of 39.14 and is currently owned by 86.3% of managers. With Manchester City looking to continue their impressive dominance in the premier league, Haaland is a player you cannot go without. He is probably the biggest threat from set-pieces in the premier league and is also on penalties for Manchester City.

Marcus Rashford, £9.0 Million, TSB: 43.2%
The second player on our list of FPL must have is from the other side of Manchester. Under Erik Ten Hag last season, we saw Marcus Rashford get back into his old form. The 25-year-old scored 17 goals and provided 7 assists in 32 starts for the Red Devils. He had an xGI of 24.97 which he massively overperformed. The starting fixtures for Manchester United look appealing as they face Wolves(H), Spurs (A), Forest (H), and Arsenal (A) in the first four gameweeks. The only downside to Rashford is that if Man United sign a new striker, it could slightly reduce the goal-scoring opportunities Rashford gets. If Rashford is able to continue his form from last season, then he can be a player to hold on to for long parts of the season.

Bukayo Saka, £8.5 Million, TSB: 53.0%
The third player on our list is Arsenal’s star boy Bukayo Saka. Saka averaged 5.3 points per match last season, while having an xGi of 0.56/90. He scored 14 goals and assisted a further 12 as Arsenal made a very impressive title charge only to fall at the latter stages. Saka is a guaranteed starter for Arsenal and is also nailed on penalty duties. He is currently owned by 53% of FPL managers and hence to avoid missing out and losing rank, Saka is an FPL must-have for gameweek 1.

John Stones, £5.5 Million, TSB: 23.5%
The fourth player on this list of FPL must-have players and the first defender to be featured here is John Stones. Priced at 5.5 million this season, Stones is a player you must have in your FPL team. Due to his unique role as an inverted centre-back, Stones will not be rotated as much by Pep Guardiola.
While many expect Stones’ gametime to go down due to the signing of Gvardiol, this will not happen as Gvardiol is likely to reduce the xMins of Ake and Akanji rather than of Stones. Not only does Stones give you a more or less guaranteed passage into Manchester City’s defence, but he is also a great threat from set-pieces and could also help you collect those bonus points.

Pervis Estupiñán, £5.0 Million, TSB: 51.0%
The last player on our list of FPL must have is Brighton’s Pervis Estupiñán. Estupiñán averaged 3.7 points per match last season, scoring once, providing 7 assists, and keeping 10 clean sheets. The Ecuadorian left-back is a must-have also due to Brighton’s favourable fixtures in the first three gameweeks of the season: Luton (H), Wolves (A), and West Ham (H). He is also nailed on the left-back position for Brighton and could be a great asset to own in a defensively solid team. However, with Brighton already losing Colwill and Mac Allister and Caicedo close to leaving the club, Brighton could be defensively weak this season, so be on the lookout for that.
