Another FPL season is around the corner with the first game kicking off in less than a month. With this in mind, managers will be assembling their troops once again for GW1. This article will look at the best FPL goalkeepers for managers to consider ahead of the deadline on Friday 11th August at 18:30 UK time.
To make things easier, I have broken our options down into 3 price brackets, Premium (5.5m), Mid-Price (5.0m), and Budget (4.5m). There are also a lot of goalkeepers priced at 4.0m, however unlike last year with Danny Ward (Leicester), we do not have a 4.0m keeper who is certain to start. All of the 4.0m keepers this season are “back-ups”. This could however be something to keep an eye on throughout pre-season in case of injuries to clubs’ No 1’s.
Without further or do, let’s take a look at what’s on offer between the sticks for FPL managers this season.

FPL Goalkeepers Analysis For the 2023/24 Season
Premium FPL Goalkeepers(5.5m)
Ederson – 5.5 Million
Man City arguably have the best set of opening fixtures out of the “Big Six”. In their first 3 games, they will face 2 promoted sides, Burnley (A) in GW1 and Sheffield United (A) in GW3. Other sides they will face in their opening 8 matches are the likes of, Fulham, Nottingham Forrest and Wolves.
Ederson kept 11 clean sheets last season in helping City claim their seventh Premier League title. Out of all of City’s defence, Ederson is the most likely to start week in and week out for the champions. I would personally go Ederson over Allison (also 5.5m), purely because of City’s opening fixtures. Liverpool have to go to Chelsea in the opening game of the season, followed by a trip to Newcastle in GW3.
Despite their attractive set of opening fixtures, it is worth bearing in mind how many games City will be playing this season. For example, City will play in The UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla between GW1 and GW2 and probably blank in GW18 due to The Club World Cup. Due to this, we as managers can expect a lot of “Pep Roulette.” Although you would imagine Ederson would start every Premier League match if fit, you can’t be 100% with all of these matches City have. Is 5.5m too much therefore to risk on Ederson?
Nick Pope – 5.5m
Nick Pope was a stand-out player for Newcastle last season, helping them to achieve a spot in The Champions League for the first time since 2002/03. Pope secured an impressive 14 clean sheets in his first season for The Magpies. Only David De Gea (17) kept more clean sheets than Pope in the previous campaign.
However, it will be difficult for Pope to maintain this form in the opening matches of the 23/24 season due to a challenging fixture list. The Toon face Aston Villa, Man City, Liverpool, Brighton and Brentford in their first 5 games of the campaign. As previously mentioned, Newcastle will also be competing in The Champions League this season. I fear that an extra competition of this magnitude could have an impact on a team like Newcastle who aren’t used to regular mid-week fixtures. However, after GW6 they have 5 good fixtures on paper, facing 2 of last year’s championship sides and nobody who finished in the top 10 of last year’s league table. With the tough opening fixtures and amount of games to be played, I think Pope could be a “one to watch” rather than selecting him for GW1.

Mid-Price FPL Goalkeepers(5.0m)
Aaron Ramsdale – 5.0m
In my opinion, Ramsdale is the best non-4.5 m option for FPL managers ahead of the start of the season. Mikel Arteta’s Gunners will want to have a similar start to last season’s campaign, where they won their opening 5 matches. They have a tempting set of fixtures, with their first 3 games coming against Nottingham Forrest (H), Crystal Palace (A) and Fulham (H). It is worth noting 5 out of 8 of their opening fixtures this season are home matches, which should play even more in Arsenal’s favour.
Ramsdale played every minute of every game last season and was a rock at the heart of the team’s defence. The English international kept 14 clean sheets and finished second in the race for the golden glove alongside fellow countryman, Nick Pope (14) and Liverpool’s Allison (14). Ramsdale is certain to start week in and week out. He must get used to playing more mid-week fixtures with Arsenal qualifying for The Champions League. However, I don’t think this should affect a club of Arsenal’s size and history, and I expect them to start this season on the front foot. Ramsdale is a tempting option and it could be worth paying that extra 0.5m instead of opting for a 4.5m goalkeeper.

David Raya – 5.0m
If David Raya stays at Brentford and features in pre-season, he will be my keeper ahead of GW1. In their first 8 matches, Brentford will come up against the likes of Fulham, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Everton and Nottingham Forrest, 3 of which will be played at home.
Raya was last season’s top-scoring goalkeeper in the whole of FPL. The 27-year-old was the first-ever Brentford player to appear in an FPL Team of the Season. Raya finished the season with 12 clean sheets and a league-leading 154 saves. For context, that was over 50 more saves than Golden Glove winner David De Gea who made 101 saves. Raya also achieved a total of 20 bonus points, which was not only the most for a goalkeeper last season but also more than the likes of Arsenal’s front trio of Gabriel Jesus (17), Gabriel Martinelli (18) and Bukayo Saka (19).
Transfer rumours are the only reason Raya is not in my team at the moment. If he stays, he is a must-have in my opinion. However, if the Spaniard was to leave, a good alternative could be new teammate Mark Flekken (4.5m), who looks the most likely to play if Raya departs. Flekken finished last season with 119 saves in The Bundesliga for SC Freiburg and helped them to finish 5th in the league. Keep an eye on The Bees!

André Onana – 5.0m
The new kid on the block, Onana (5.0m) is a great route into the Manchester United defence. Many managers (34% at the time of writing) already have defender Luke Shaw (5.5m) in their squads, however Onana could also be a strong option alongside or instead of Shaw.
After the departure of the great David De Gea, Onana will take the gloves and be The Red Devils’ first-choice keeper heading into the new campaign. United signed Onana for an initial £43.8 million from Inter Milan and the 27-year-old will be reunited with manager Erik Ten Hag from their Ajax days. Onana spent just one season at Inter Milan where he won The Coppa Italia, and Supercoppa Italia as well as reaching The Champions League Final.
Onana describes himself as a “modern goalkeeper”. Not only is he a good shot-stopper, but he also feels comfortable in possession and allows the sides to play out from the back. He kept the most clean sheets in The Champions League last season ahead of Man City’s Ederson (5.5m). Onana will be an integral part of United’s Defence, and with The Reds facing Wolves and Nottingham Forrest in their opening 3 games, I can see Onana getting off to a strong start in the league. The Cameroon international is definitely one to consider.
Budget FPL Goalkeepers(4.5m)
Sam Johnstone – 4.5m
Sam Johnstone is an interesting option for managers at just 4.5m. Palace has a nice set of opening fixtures playing the likes of Sheffield United, Brentford, Wolves, Fulham and Nottingham Forrest in their first 8 league matches.
The 30-year-old became The Eagles’ first-choice keeper when Roy Hodgson took over towards the back end of last season. Johnstone kept 3 clean sheets in 9 games, scoring 36 points in the process at an average of 4 points per game. After the appointment of Hodgson, Palace seemed to find another gear. Not only were they scoring more goals and creating more chances from the likes of Eberechi Eze (6.5m) and Michael Olise (6.0m), but they also started to concede fewer goals. Since Hodgson joined Palace, they have conceded just 11 goals (third-best for any side during this period). Furthermore, over the entirety of last season, Palace conceded just 53 goals (fifth-best in the league).
Now that Hodgson, who will turn 76 next month, has signed a permanent deal with the club, we can expect to see Johnstone starting this season as The Eagles’ number 1.

Jordan Pickford – 4.5m
Jordan Pickford is probably the most “solid” option for managers ahead of this season. You know what you are going to get with The England international. If fit, he will 100% start every game and you can guarantee that he will pick up some points for saves along the way.
Pickford played in 37/38 of Everton’s league games last season. Despite The Toffees not being one of the strongest defensive sides last campaign, Pickford still managed to keep 8 clean sheets and averaged just under 3.5 points per game. The 29-year-old shot-stopper also managed 124 saves throughout last season. Only Brentford’s David Raya (5.0m) and Fulham’s Bernd Leno (4.5m) managed more saves than Pickford.
Everton have a very nice run of fixtures to start the season. 5 out of 8 of their first games are to be played at Goodison Park. They also face 2 recently promoted sides during this period Sheffield United (GW4) and Luton (GW7). Furthermore, they will also face just one of the league’s “big six” in their opening 8 matches.
Despite The Toffees’ weak defence last campaign, this will no doubt improve under Sean Dyche, who will look to tighten up at the back, as he did with Burnley. After a full pre-season under their belts, Everton could become a tricky side to play against.

Jason Steele – 4.5m
Brighton had a phenomenal campaign last year and finished in 6th place, just 9 points off a spot in The Champions League. Not only did they score 72 goals, more than Man Utd (58), Newcastle (68) and Spurs (70), but they also managed to keep 12 clean sheets (6th most for a team last season). The Seagulls have a favourable set of opening fixtures playing at home in 5 out of 8 of their opening games. Their first 3 matches include Luton (H), Wolves (A) and West Ham (H).
Last season, Jason Steele kept 6 clean sheets in 16 appearances, picking up 8 bonus points as well as registering an assist. Steele became the first choice towards the back of last season and looks the most likely to remain as Brighton’s number 1 for the start of this season. However, it is worth keeping an eye on how Roberto De Zerbi lines up during the preseason games. My gut tells me Steele will keep his spot, but be wary of new signing Bart Verbruggen (4.5m) who was signed for a reported £16.3 million earlier this month.
Whoever starts in goal for the seagulls has the potential to be a great value. All 3 of these keepers are priced at only 4.5m. Managers just need to keep an eye out during pre-season, to see who gets the nod from De Zerbi.

Wes Foderingham – 4.5m
My final goalkeeper for managers to keep a lookout for is, newly promoted Sheffield United keeper, Wes Foderingham. Foderingham is priced at just 4.5m and could be an exciting differential for managers to consider.
Sheffield faces Crystal Palace (H), Nottingham Forrest (A) and Everton (A) all in 3 of their opening 4 fixtures. Sheffield will want to make a productive start to life back in the top flight, and Foderingham looks the most likely to start in between the sticks for The Blades.
Foderingham was just 2 clean sheets off of winning The Golden Glove last season in the Championship. The 32-year-old played 40 games in the league last season and helped Sheffield to finish runners-up to Burnley and gain automatic promotion back to The Premier League. Foderingham kept a clean sheet in 45% of the matches that he played in. He did however pick up 2 red cards along the way.
If you are looking for a newly promoted differential, Foderingham could be your man. I would pick him over Burnley’s Arijanet Muric (4.5m), purely because The Clarets have to play Man City, Aston Villa, Spurs, Man Utd, Newcastle, and Chelsea in 6 out of 8 of their opening matches. Muric is also likely to lose his starting spot to James Trafford, the England U21 Euro winning Goalkeeper who was sensational in the final vs Spain.

Cheap/Bench FPL Goalkeepers(4.0m)
Turner has signed for Nottingham Forest from Arsenal few days back which makes him a starting 4.0 million goal keeper at the moment. He is the first choice keeper for Forest right now, but it is to be noted that Forest are still trying to sign Dean Henderson and then there could be competition. There are high chances that Turner could keep his place even after the signing of Henderson as Henderson has not recovered from his injury.
There are slight chances that Henderson becomes fit, signs and becomes first choice- But as there are no nailed 4.0 million keepers right now, there is nothing to lose. Turner also rotates well with Johnstone and Pickford so they seem to be the best 4.5/4.0 Keeper combination.

Which FPL Goalkeeper will I be choosing?
I feel it is too soon to have a nailed-on keeper ahead of the start of The FPL season. At the moment, I can’t see myself paying any more than 5.0m for a keeper. It’s worth keeping an eye on Roberto De Zerbi’s selection during the preseason. I am also interested to see how David Moyes’ West Ham line up, with rumours that Alphonse Areola (£4.0m) might claim the number one spot from Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) who is now 38 years old.
I left out the likes of Fulham’s Bernd Leno (4.5m) and Wolves’ José Sá (5.0m) in the article, purely on a fixture basis. Leno faces both Arsenal (A) and Man City (A) in his opening 4 matches. Whilst Sá faces Man Utd (A) and Brighton (H) in his opening 2 fixtures of the campaign. My top 3 at the moment would be, Ramsdale (5.0m), Pickford (4.5m) and either a Brighton or Brentford keeper depending on pre-season/transfers.
Thank you very much for reading my first article of the season. I hope to bring you more soon! For now, good luck to all FPL managers and enjoy picking your teams for the start of the season.
