A Guide to FPL Team Structure | 2023/24 FPL Season

FPL Team Structure refers to nothing but the orientation or the making of your FPL team based on positions, prices and formation. It is important to understand team structure while building your FPL team due to a variety of reason especially at the start of the season due to large number of unknown variables in the game. It is crucial to know your team structure due to a variety of reasons-

Importance of FPL Team Structure

  • Flexibility(Moving from one player/position/formation to another)
  • Reduce the number of Hits
  • Potential Routes to Highly owned EO players which you don’t own
  • Money in the Bank

General Thoughts on FPL Pricing and Team Structure for 2023/24

  • FPL has priced the game in such a way that- Haaland(£14.0) and TAA(£8.0) are Tier 1 and you should make slight sacrifices elsewhere to accommodate them in your team.
  • Outside TAA and Haaland, all the picks from the Top 8 teams are kindly priced. You could even pick a strong team with just players from Top 6/Top 8.
  • Only Alisson, Pope and Ederson are priced at £5.5 among Gks. Going with a £5.0(Ramsdale) or £4.5 GK(Pickford, Johnstone, Leno, Brighton GK, Pickford) seems better due to great options available at that price.
  • Trippier(£6.5) is placed at a tricky price point. The fact that you can get the likes of Chelsea fullbacks, Shaw for £1.0 less, the likes of Gabriel, Estupinan £1.5 less puts Trippier off. Botman(£4.5) and Schar(£5.0) offer better route if you want to go to Newcastle defense. There are plenty of good 4.5 Defenders in the game.
  • Cheap midfielders– Rashford is priced at £9.0 MIL, but all the other midfielders in the £7.5- £8.5 range are under-priced and offer great value. Saka, Odegaard, Bruno, Martinelli, Foden are all good picks. Maddison, Kulusevski, Sterling, Bowen are priced £7.0 million and could be good differentials if they pick up.
  • This is because your £6.5 midfielders(Like Mitoma/Mbuemo) are better than your £6.0 Forwards(DCL, Ferguson) and £7.5-£8.5 midfielders(Foden, Bruno, Saka, Odegaard, etc) offer more value than £7.5-8.0 forwards(Darwin, Jesus, Watkins, Wilson, etc).

Price Points and Players to Target:

Before moving on to the structures it is important to analyze the price points- Which price points offer value, which price points to avoid, which price point to target, which price points are flexible and so on. Here are the players to target price point wise for your references.

Goalkeepers

  • £4.0- BENCH FODDER. Have an eye on Areola who could be starter.
  • £4.5- TARGET– Pickford, Johnstone, Leno, Brighton GK, Pickford- All good value
  • £5.0- NEUTRAL– Ramsdale
  • £5.5- AVOID– Pope, Ederson, Alisson- 4.5/5.0 MIL Gks have better value for money.

Defenders

  • £4.0 BENCH FODDER– Baldock, Bell, Beyer, Norrington David(Best £4.0 Million FPL Defenders For The 2023/24 FPL Season)
  • £4.5TARGET- Botman, Mings/Torres/Cash, Veltman, Guehi, Tarkowski, Henry- Good value. Surely need one or two picks in this range
  • £5.0-5.5MUST TARGET- Estupinan, Gabriel, Zinchenko, Dalot, Shaw, Chilwell/Reece- Defenders with good attacking threat playing for Top team available at this range. Surely Target.
  • £6.0-7.5AVOID– Trippier, Robertson, VVD- Similar picks available at cheaper price points
  • £8.0NEUTRAL– TAA- Depends on the team structure you want to go

Midfielders

  • £4.5WAIT AND WATCH/BENCH FODDER– Nakamba only nailed option right now. Watchlist: £4.5 Million FPL Midfielders Watchlist for the 2023/24 FPL Season
  • £5.0- 6.0: WAIT and WATCH– Gibbs White, Enciso, Andreas. Wait for the options to emerge
  • £6.5-7.0TARGET– Mitoma, Mbeumo, Eze, March- Good value picks for the 4th/5th mid. Watchlist- Maddison, Kulu, Mount, Sterling, Bowen
  • £7.5-9.0MUST TARGET – Rashford, Saka, Bruno Fernandes, Odegaard, Martinelli, Foden, Son- All proven FPL assets and slightly under-priced. Attack them!
  • £9.5-12.5NEUTRAL– Salah(depends on the team structure)

Forwards

  • £4.5Bench Fodder– Watchout for Balogun transfer news
  • £5- 5.5AVOID– Joao Pedro, Morris, Ndiaye- No reliable options available at the moment
  • £6.0: WAIT and WATCH– Ferguson, Dominic Calvert, Wissa- Could become great options if they pick up form
  • £7.0-8.0: TARGET– Jesus, Darwin, Nkunku, Watkins, Wilson, Jackson
  • £12.5NEUTRAL– Kane- Depends on Team Structure
  • £14.0TARGET-Haaland- Must own

FPL Team Structures

As Haaland(£14.0) and TAA(£8.0) are priced as Tier 1, For the understanding of this blog we have divided this article into 6 Team structures built around them-

  • One Premium(Haaland) without TAA
  • One Premium(Haaland) with TAA
  • Two Premiums(Salah/Kane+ Haaland) without TAA
  • Two Premiums(Salah/Kane+ Haaland) with TAA
  • Three Premium(Haaland+ Kane + Salah)
  • No Salah

Note: The players mentioned here in the drafts are just a placeholder for the price points and need not be the best players.

Team Structure 1- One Premium(Haaland) without TAA

3-4-3

This structure has only one Premium(Haaland) with no TAA. This means that you can have a stacked midfield where there are so many good mid-priced options. The first two drafts have Jesus as the second striker in the 3-5-2 and 4-4-2 formations. In both these drafts £8.0 FWD(Jesus) can become £6.0 million forwards if required and that money can be used to get TAA

The third draft 3-4-3 is the personal favorite in this structure as it allows you to bench either a £5.5 mid/£5.0 defender. There is also a 5.0 million keeper in Onana. This drafts allows great flexibility and be ready to make changes after the information gained from the first few weeks.

The best thing about this structure is that you can have a good 12th player(first bench option) and also money in the bank if required. First draft has Botman as first sub, Second draft has Andreas as first sub, Third draft has Danjuma as first sub.

Pros

  • Set and Forget Captaincy on Haaland
  • With good budget available to select the midfielders you can select 3-5 mids in the £7.0-£9.0 range- So many good options there like Sterling, Foden, Martinelli, Odegaard, Saka, Bruno Fernandes and Rashford, Maddison, etc.
  • Good bench and can have money ITB if required

Cons

  • Slightly difficult route to Salah

Team Structure 2- One Premium(Haaland) with TAA

3-4-3

This is a variation of Structure 1- It covers one premium(Haaland) but along with TAA. The first two drafts have a £7.5-8.0 FWD with Haaland. They are almost identical but the 4-4-2 draft is slightly better and our favorite. It does not have 2 £6.5 MIDS and has Pereira(£5.5) as the first sub to rotate with the defenders when needed. This offers excellent flexibility to squad. You can upgrade £5.5 to a £6.0 MID if there is an early bandwagon. Or else downgrade £5.5 MID to a £4.5 MID and the use the £1.5 million to upgrade other midfield price points(£6.5 to £7.5-8.0 and £7.5 to £8.5-9.0). In the second draft, 4.5 Keeper can become 5.0 Keeper(Ramsdale/Onana) with the 0.5 in the bank.

The third draft is a 3-4-3 structure with a stacked up midfield and forward. This draft almost covers all the price points, but the only issue is a weak bench and 3rd defender.

Pros

Versatile and adaptable structure. Can switch around to other formations easily.

Cons

  • Slightly weaker benches compared to Structure 1
  • Difficult to get Salah in when needed

Team Structure 3- Two Premiums(Salah/Kane+ Haaland) without TAA

3-4-3
3-5-2/ 4-4-2, Two Premiums(Haaland+Kane) without TAA

The first 2 drafts cover Salah as the 2nd Premium alongside Haaland. Both drafts have a good bench cover(£4.5 DEF/ £5.5 FWD). Both are very similar with minute price point changes. The structure would work really good if there is a £5.5-£6.5 FWDs emerging in pre-season or early in the season. Other price points are strong enough and flexible to switch around. If Kane is required at some point during the season in these structures, surely Salah has to be sacrificed. That’s the major concern in this draft.

The third draft covers a 3-4-3 structure with good first sub in 4.5 defender. Only issue is that you want a good 5.5 forward to nail his place before the season starts.

The fourth draft has Kane as the 2nd Premium instead of Salah. £5.5 MID/£4.5 DEF are the first bench players in the 4-4-2/3-5-2 drafts. If Salah is needed, Kane+ £5.5 MID can make way for Salah+ £5.5/£4.5 FWD.

Pros

  • Solid structure covering most price points.
  • Good bench

Cons

Slight dependence of an emergence of a £5.5-6.5 striker in the first two drafts

Team Structure 4- Two Premiums(Salah/Kane+ Haaland) with TAA

4-4-2, Two Premiums(Haaland+ Kane) with TAA

This structure covers Two Premiums(Haaland + Kane/Salah) along with a £8.0 DEF in TAA. The first two drafts shows Salah as the second premium. The first draft can be used either as a 3-5-2/4-4-2 based on benching a £5.5 MID/£4.5 DEF. Going with a £8.0 DEF means that there are 3*(£4.5 DEFs) and no £5.0-5.5 DEFs in the first draft. £5.0-5.5 DEFs is an important price points among defenders this season due to the pricing. Premiums/Semi Premium Defenders are available at this price point this season. Even if you need a £5.0-5.5 DEF later, it is slightly difficult to break structure and hits for defenders are not recommended especially at the start of the season.

This problem is addressed and covered in the second draft with two £5.0 DEFs and switching to a 4-5-1 formation with two £4.5 FWDS. However, this means that the bench becomes weak with 2 £4.5 FWDs and a £4.0 DEF. If there are starting £4.5 FWDs emerging before the start of the season, this structure is right up there as one of the solid structures.

The third draft covers Kane as the second premium along with Haaland. However, this structure is not very reliable due to two £6.5 MIDS and a weak bench.

Pros

Covers almost all the bases. Safe and strong structure. Surely won’t fall much behind in the early weeks. Can take up risks a little later in the season.

Cons

  • Relying on £5.5-6.5 midfielders to deliver which may backfire
  • Need to compromise either on a good bench or play without £5.0-5.5 DEF price point who offer good value.

Team Structure 5- Three Premium(Haaland+ Kane + Salah)

4-4-2

This is the Three Premium structure with Haaland, Salah, and Kane- The Top 3 scoring players in FPL last season. The three premiums are surrounded by Budget defenders and midfielders to complete the squad. This structure may look good on paper, but it is less likely to work out long-term.

As this structure eats up funds, you can’t get value midfield assets in the £8.5-9.0 range(Eg. Saka, Rashford) who are all reliable as well. The routes to these midfielders in the £8.5-9.0 bracket are also tough as there you would require to sacrifice a premium or deplete the other positions. Essentially outside the threemium you will want your £6.5 midfielders to deliver those points which is risky.

Pros

Three Premiums are all consistent and you need not have to worry about their EOs at any point.

Cons

  • No players in the £8.0-9.0 MID price bracket and only one player in the £7.0-7.5 MID price range. With so many good value assets in these price points, this structure doesn’t have any players from there and it is also difficult to get one when required.
  • Very Weak bench

Team Structure 6- No Haaland

This looked to be a good structure covering all the main price points but it does miss out on the most important price point- £14.0 FWD aka Haaland. The main fear after not going with Haaland in GW1 is not the fear of missing out on points in the initial Gameweeks, but the difficulty in bringing him later on. You would need to collapse your team with multiple hits/make an early wildcard if you want back Haaland in. It is better to start safe and then take the risks if required later on.

Pros

Can go for 2 Premiums(Kane and Salah) and still have a solid squad. Strong midfield and Strong defense covering all the key price points.

Cons

Haaland is already 85% owned and it is a big risk now to own Haaland. You don’t want to be chasing right from GW1 if Haaland goes big. And it will be difficult to get Haaland later if you want as well due to price rises.

Conclusion

  • Structure 5(Three premium) and Structure 6(No Haaland) can be ignored at least during the start of the season due to the problems mentioned above
  • Our favorite structure is Structure 1 and Structure 2- One Premium(Haaland). It does not have Salah/Kane but helps to have a solid foundation and offers flexibility. Even though the route to 2nd Premium is not very easy, this structure offers overall balance(thanks to excellent value in £7.5-9.0 MIDS and £5.0-5.5 DEFs) and a good bench.
  • Going without Salah sounds slightly risky. But it is not just about Salah. Obviously, Salah is going to bang in the first few weeks, get over 220+ points over the season. But it is Salah + £6.5 MID + £4.5 DEF vs (2 * £8.5/8.0£ MIDS)+ £5.5 DEF+ £1.0 ITB. That’s the question you need to ask yourself. At the moment, with the information we have the second option looks really tempting.
  • If you are going for 2 Premium, Salah slightly edges over Kane mainly due to the flexibility of the team structure.
  • If a £4.5 midfielder/ £4.5-5.0 forward emerges, starts regularly, and performs well during the pre-season, the Two Premium(especially Haaland+ Salah) structure looks really interesting.

There is no right or wrong structure/drafts in this game. But it is important to know why you are picking this team and why you are not picking the other ones. This article is just an eye-opener on the importance of team structure and why it needs to be analyzed before making the final draft. Hope this article helps in your decision-making process while making the drafts. Good luck!
