FPL Gameweek 36 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold & Sell

We’re at the business end of the season. This means every transfer is important and because we’re ‘dead-ending’ our teams into GW38, structure is out of the window, and differentials are aplenty given FPL Gameweek 36 and Gameweek 37. Moves made from here on out will likely be impacted by your goals till the end of the season – whether it’s to hold rank, defend a mini-league lead or pick high-ceiling differentials to ‘chase’.

FPL Gameweek 36 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY

Callum Wilson (7.1, FWD, Newcastle United)

FPL Gameweek 36 Transfer Tips: Players to BUY ~ Callum Wilson

It’s hard to ignore a DGW especially when it’s a team in good offensive form against teams who have a mixed defensive record recently. Callum Wilson, in my opinion, is not the first-choice striker for Newcastle United ahead of Alexander Isak. However, he’s shown how deadly he can be off the bench too with an impressive 5 goals in his last 4 appearances including 2 of them coming off the bench!

Wilson Stats since GW29:

  • Goals– 8(1st overall)
  • Big Chances– 8(Joint 3rd among Forwards)
  • xG– 3.97(4th among Forwards)
  • Goal Involvements- 9(Joint 1st overall)
  • FPL Points– 56(Joint 1st among Forwards, 2nd overall)

Wilson has amassed over 3 xG across his last 4 appearances and Isak ends up being shunted wide left when Wilson is on the pitch. I think Wilson might be expected to get a start against Leeds and then come off the bench against Brighton but irrespective, I think he has the ability and movement to threaten even in limited minutes making him a high-upside pick this week.

Bruno Fernandes (9.4, MID, Manchester United)

FPL Gameweek 36 Transfer Tips: Players to BUY ~ Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes doesn’t scream ‘fantasy investment’ having scored just once each since DGW22. Nonetheless, if investment in Newcastle or Brighton for DGW36 isn’t your thing, a move for Bruno looks like a smart differential pick. Bruno has 11 shots and 14 key passes across his last 4 league games and has been desperately unlucky not to have come away with more returns. The returns of both Casemiro and Eriksen bode well for offensive potential. United are in a fight to finish in the top 4 and thus need to win their games in hand. They host a safe-from-relegation Wolves side at Old Trafford this weekend and then have a DGW against Bournemouth and a struggling Chelsea side before finishing out the season home to Fulham – a great set of fixtures for offensive returns.

Bruno Fernandes Stats since GW29(Rank Among Midfielders):

  • Expected Goal Involvement- 7.6(1st)
  • Key Passes- 32(1st)
  • Big Chances created- 10(1st)
  • Expected Assists- 5.23(1st)

Despite his excellent underlying data, he has been unlucky to just get 1 goal, 1 assist during this time.

FPL Gameweek 36 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD

Jack Grealish (7.3, MID, Manchester City)

FPL Gameweek 36 Transfer Tips: Players to HOLD ~ Jack Grealish

Grealish is a very plausible ‘hold’ this week. He was on the bench against Leeds and even though there’s a small chance he might be ‘rested’ again this weekend against Everton, I expect him to return to the lineup for DGW37. Title-chasing City have been in great goalscoring form and with transfers at a premium, moving away from Grealish doesn’t seem like a necessary move.

Estupinan (4.9, DEF, Brighton and Hove Albion)

FPL Gameweek 36 Transfer Tips: Players to HOLD ~ Pervis Estupinan

While Estupinan wasn’t in my plans for this section, I was surprised to see him show up at 16.5k transfers out at the time of writing. Brighton are fresh off conceding 5 against Everton and look knackered ahead of a difficult fixture run in a congested schedule. However, while I think they’ll only manage 1 clean sheet between now and the end of the season, the fact they have 5 fixtures in 3 GWs means they’re in a position for a swing of variance points and thus wasting a precious transfer to move out the Brighton fullback seems unnecessary. Brighton are also the only team to Double in both GW36 and GW37.

Estupinan always carries the attacking threat as he has an xGI/90 of 0.20 since the World Cup which are great numbers for a defender.

Key stat: Estupinan’s 11 touches in the opposition penalty area since GW33 is the Joint Highest among defenders during this time.

FPL Gameweek 36 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL

Ollie Watkins (7.5, FWD, Aston Villa)

FPL Gameweek 36 Transfer Tips: Players to SELL ~ Ollie Watkins

An exceptional run of returns has been followed by 4 back to back blanks for Watkins. While his expected goals data remains fairly decent, Villa have a difficult fixture run in till the end of the season. With FWDs like Wilson/Isak and potentially Ferguson/Enciso emerging as punts, there might be potential for a higher upside play.

The underlying numbers for Watkins have also dipped massively over the last 4 matches.

Watkins(GW17 to GW31) vs Watkins(GW32 to GW35)- Per 90 minutes stats

  • Expected goals– 0.67 vs 0.24
  • Big Chances– 1.15 vs 0.5
  • xGI– 0.9 vs 0.3
  • Shots inside the box– 2.9 vs 2.0
  • FPL Points– 7.35 vs 1.75

Solly March (5.3, MID, Brighton and Hove Albion)

FPL Gameweek 36 Transfer Tips: Players to SELL ~ Solly March

This article is being written up early before we have a press conference update from De Zerbi however the injury to March looked like it would keep him out of at least DGW36. In that scenario, March becomes a priority sale even if there were a chance of a return in DGW37 as midfield spots are at a premium and there are excellent options available to make ground like Martinelli, Bruno, sideways to MacAllister or even a punt on Willock.
