FPL managers who bought into DGW27 were fairly well rewarded after Wednesday’s round of games with popular assets like March, Mitoma, Mac Allister all bagging goal contributions across the GW, Toney getting a double-digit return and both highly-backed defenses of Brighton and Brentford notching that clean sheer in their second game.
There was a relatively ‘template’ team heading into the Wildcard for GW26/27 but an International break and a looming opportunity to bench boost in large DGW29 presents an opening for managers to go down different paths. Strategy and chip usage might largely dictate moves at this point with Free Hit in GW28 or 29 also possibilities. My focus is on backing players who have a fixture in the reduced GW28 as well as a good enough DGW29 that I’d be happy to bench boost with them if the opportunity presented itself to do so.

FPL Gameweek 28 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY
Ollie Watkins (7.4, FWD, Aston Villa)
A home tie against Bournemouth in GW28 followed by a double away to Chelsea and Leicester bring Ollie Watkins to the fore. On eye test, watching this Villa side it almost feels like the setup is currently geared towards getting chances into Watkins as their attacking strategy. Watkins is on a remarkable run of 6 goals in his last 7 starts. He’s on penalties, he’s accumulating a very healthy rate of xG (0.54/start in his last 4) and is on penalties. Villa have the aforementioned 3 fixtures in the next 2 gameweeks compared to just a single game for other teams and their run-in isn’t too bad either. A good time to bring him in.
Matchup alert-
Over the last 6 games, Bournemouth have conceded 124 crosses from their left flank(Highest in the league), and 58 crosses from the right(6th highest in the league). This should work well for Watkins who is really good in the air- 3 of his last 7 goals have been headers. In fact, His 3 headed goals are the highest for headed goals among all players since the World Cup.
James Maddison (8.1, MID, Leicester City)
A player that’s in my top 5 favourite FPL assets to own, Maddison oozes class on the pitch and has haul potential whenever he plays. He creates chances at a great rate and has a mean strike in his locker thus helping his bonus potential while making him an xG overachiever respectively.
Maddison has Brentford in GW28, a good-looking DGW in 29 and an excellent run of fixtures running through to GW35 for a Leicester side that desperately need to start producing results. He’s had 14 shots across his last 4 starts at 0.24 xG per game and made 12 key passes at 0.58 xA per game across that run. Maddison has been unlucky not to return in the last 2 weeks with an xGI- 1.80 and 3 big chances created.
Maddison is the kind of explosive FPL asset I like and I’ll be actively looking at ways to fit the Leicester maestro into my midfield this GW.

FPL Gameweek 28 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD
Luke Shaw (5.2, DEF, Manchester United)
Despite going down to 10 men, Manchester United held on to keep a clean sheet this past GW and reward owners with a 5 point return. Shaw blanks this GW before a DGW29 where Manchester United will be without Casemiro (suspended for 4 matches due to a second direct red card). United’s defensive numbers without Casemiro make for grim reading and even their attack suffers from his absence.
While some of these numbers may have been during early days in the season where Ten Hag was stillin the process of implementing his game plan, it’s certainly worrying and thus where Shaw and Bruno Fernandes were prime transfer targets for me personally ahead of the DGW, they are firmly wait-and-see’s for me now. If I owned Shaw, I’d just bench him this week even it meant putting out fewer than XI starters and play him in DGW29; I don’t believe he’s worth a transfer out especially in this period. Currently 73,000 transfers out and counting.

Mohamed Salah (12.8, MID, Liverpool)
I know that this is much less straightforward hold than someone like Shaw but here are my arguments to hold Salah. Second highest sold player this week with 141k transfers out at the time of writing, Salah has a blank followed by a DGW29 against Manchester City and Chelsea. His fixture in GW30 is against Arsenal. That’s a very difficult looking fixture run.
However as Salah showed against Manchester United, he tends to fare very well in the big games and with a double in GW29 unlike Manchester City, I think there’s enough potential to hold Salah as a potentially viable ‘differential’ on penalties and still accumulating strong xG numbers in games where Salah tends to do well. This season more than most others, money doesn’t seem to be a big issue in making even a bench boost team and thus allows the opportunity to hold Salah if possible.

FPL Gameweek 28 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL
Kevin De Bruyne (12.1, MID, Manchester City)
KDB was electric for City midweek and yet I’m cautiously confident of the logic behind selling the 25.5% owned Belgian midfielder. City have a blank in GW28 upcoming following by just a single fixture, against Liverpool, in GW29. KDB has often been a big game player and this may be no different but it’s hard to overlook his recent managed minutes. He’s played only 75 mins with 1 start in City’s last 3 league games which is a big concern for a player of his value. He’s ceded penalties to Haaland/Mahrez.
Even with him looking like he’s getting back to his best in a performance against Leipzig midweek, a combination of fixtures and rotation make it feel like he’s too big a risk to hold at his price and with the wealth of midfield options currently doing very well in FPL.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (7.3, DEF, Liverpool)
Recent ‘SELL’ suggestions like Mahrez, Mitrovic, Robert Sanchez, Eddie Nketiah all remain a compelling sale and to avoid repeating these players, I’ve gone with Alexander-Arnold here. A popular pick due to Liverpools recent fixtures, Trent had a very strong run of 5 clean sheets and 1 assist with 4 bonus points in the 5 fixtures that preceded their tie against Bournemouth. However their unreliable defensive display against Bournemouth coupled with 2 poor showings against Real Madrid reflect how the Liverpool defense still has a long way to go. Liverpools fixture run isn’t the best and while it may still be conducive to goals, it looks especially difficult for clean sheets thus Trent is an easy sell this week, in my opinion, with Chilwell amongst others emerging as good defensive punts.
