FPL GW28 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

1) Is it worth playing the Wildcard Ahead of FPL GW28?

Is it worth playing the Wildcard Ahead of FPL GW28?

Gameweek 28 is a blank gameweek, with six teams blanking this week. This has allowed FPL managers to use the Wildcard and attack the fixtures in GW28 and 29.

If you don’t have enough players in your starting XI this week, consider using the Wildcard. Now, the question is, how many are enough? If you have 8-10 players blanking this week, Wildcard is a must.

Anything below that can be handled with regular transfers, where you can strengthen your team for GW29. In such a case, you can avoid playing the Wildcard right now and save it for GW30 or even later to attack at the end of the 2022/23 FPL season. If you are planning to Wildcard in GW29 and are taking multiple hits to get a good team in place for GW28, you should do it a week earlier and avoid the hits.

There is no one correct answer here. Ultimately, you will have to see your team and take a call.

The Wildcard in GW29 is slightly better as you can set up your team to maximise the double gameweek options without worrying about the blanks. But if your GW28 team isn’t ideal, go a week early and get the most out of the chip.

You can even use your regular transfers, field a strong XI for GW28 and 29, and Bench Boost in GW29 (if you have the chip left). You can reassess after GW29 once we get confirmed information on the blank in GW32 and the probable Doubles in GW34/37.

2) Who are the best players to go for in FPL BGW28?

We have some great options to look for GW28 and beyond (depending on your strategy).

If you are looking for a defender, Ben Chilwell is a great player to get in for GW28. At the time of writing, Ben Chilwell is the most popular transfer for GW28. Chelsea is now playing with wingbacks, which is excellent for Chilwell’s FPL potential.

In his last 4 starts, the Chelsea defender has scored 21 points getting a goal and an assist. Chelsea has also seen slight improvements in defence, and there is real potential for Chilwell to get a massive haul against Everton this week.

Coming to midfielders, we have James Maddison from Leicester. He has 14 attacking returns this season (the highest among all Leicester players). The Leicester midfielder has been unlucky not to come away with hauls in recent games. He is a nailed option in the team and will likely get involved if Leicester gets anything in attack.

Miguel Almiron from Newcastle is another exciting option. He seems like a forgotten player right now as opposed to the early part of the season, where he got 10 returns from GW9-17 and emerged as a high-value pick. He has only scored twice since GW17, but he is facing Nottingham Forest, who concede most of their chances from where Almiron generally plays, which shows good haul potential.

Tottenham’s Son Heung-min can also be in play if you are looking at a one-week punt. He is facing Southampton, who look poor and are bottom of the Premier League.

Among forwards, Kane is a great option to buy this week if you don’t have him in your team. The Tottenham forward has been consistent throughout the season, getting 26 attacking returns (20G+6A).

You can look at Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa if you own Kane. He has scored in 6 of his last 7 matches, which included opponents like Arsenal and Man City. He is the 4th highest-scoring forward in the game right now and ranks just behind Haaland and Kane for goals scored since the FPL restart (GW17 onwards)

You can even consider Kai Havertz from Chelsea if you are playing aggressively. He ranks 7th among all forwards for xG (4.33) since the FPL restart. We know he is a dependable option (wrt minutes) in Chelsea’s attack and is also on penalties.

3) Should we sell Erling Haaland ahead of Gameweek 28?

Should we sell Erling Haaland ahead of Gameweek 28?

A lot of FPL managers are thinking of selling Erling Haaland this week. The question remains: is it worth taking him out?

Haaland only plays once in the next two gameweeks, with GW28 being a blank gameweek for the Man City forward. This week he has a blank. GW29 is also a single gameweek, but it’s against Liverpool. Liverpool still has problems in defence, and Haaland can easily haul big in that game.

Toney, Watkins or even Havertz are possible replacements. Toney and Watkins have been in great form for their respective teams. Havertz is a risky punt if you are chasing in the game.

It’s a logical move to take out Haaland and get in one of the picks mentioned above. Though the number of fixtures is more for Toney, Watkins and Havertz, Haaland can match or even outscore them in GW29.

The argument comes down to how many points these forwards can score in GW28 and whether it is worth using a transfer for the same. If you have other fires to put out, it’s wise to keep Haaland and accommodate just one of these forwards if you already have Kane. If not, then get in Watkins/Havertz for Haaland in GW28.

Please don’t spread the extra Haaland funds by a lot; otherwise, getting him back will be challenging. Just make sure you have the plan to bring Haaland back in GW30. He is facing Southampton that week, and his ownership will likely be very high.

4) Which chip is better in FPL GW28 – Wildcard or Free Hit?

Which chip is better in FPL GW28 - Wildcard or Free Hit?

Two viable strategies have emerged for GW28. Managers still have their Wildcard, and Free Hit left have the decision to make. The first option is to use the Wildcard in GW28 and the Free Hit in GW32/34/37. The other option is to go attacking by using the Free Hit in GW28 and Wildcard in GW29 or later, depending on the state of one’s team.

Wildcard in FPL GW28

  • Wildcard in GW28 is a much safer approach where you set your team up for GW28 + 29 with one chip. This way, you can save your Free Hit for GW29 and use it for the blank in GW32 or the doubles in GW34/37.
  • GW28 Wildcard helps you create a balance with teams like Man Utd and Brighton, who blank in GW28 but have a good double in GW29.

Free Hit in FPL GW28

  • If your team looks okay for the Double Gameweek in GW29, you can go aggressive by following a slightly different approach. Free Hit is excellent this week if you are trying to gain massively and go against the crowd.
  • For GW28, most FPL managers will have a team consisting of 3 Arsenal players, Chelsea and Newcastle defenders, and a double-up of Kane/Watkins/Toney. Get in combinations like James + Chilwell, Havertz + another Chelsea attacker, Porro + Son, and Almiron + Isak. All these are high-upside players, and few own them in FPL.

Ultimately, it will depend on the chips you have left and how your team is looking for GW28 and 29.

That will be all from my side for this week! All the best for FPL Gameweek 28, and I will see you next week.
