2022 World Cup Fantasy | Group – A Preview
GROUP A:
QATAR 🇶🇦
- Nickname: The Annabi (Maroon)
- Current FIFA Rank: 50
- Manager: Félix Sánchez
- Formation: 3-5-2 / 3-4-1-2 / 5-3-2
📸 26-MAN SQUAD LIST:
🎁Qatar Predicted Starting 11:
🔑 KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR:
⭐ Akram Afif & Almoez Ali ($4.5m FWD’s)
Both are equally good options! The only thing that separates them is that Afif is a prolific goalscorer. Almoez scores but not at the rate at which Afif does! In 2016, Afif joined Villarreal where he played for their youth team, becoming the first Qatari player ever to play in La Liga. Afif & Almoez both take penalties so I’m not sure who’s gonna take them on the matchday😅 Afif & Almoez are Felix Sánchez’s go-to center forward pairing… They both can play in some different positions as well so if Sanchéz tweaks the system they could play in some other role. Since they don’t face the toughest test in their group, the Netherlands till Matchday 3, they must take atleast 4 points in their first two games against Ecuador & Senegal to have any chance of qualifying for the knockouts in front of their home crowd so they might go for it rather than playing it safe which could help either of these main 2 Annabi strikers!
⭐ Hassan Al-Haydos ($4.5m FWD)
He is the captain of the side who are playing in the World Cup for the first time ever & since they playing in front of the home crowd, there’s added responsibility in Al-Haydos’ shoulders as well! He’ll be nervous but definitely excited to have the honour of leading the side! He’s another one of those who might take the penalty on any given day! Decent option & definitely a good differential for the first couple of GWs atleast!
💎 Pedro Miguel / Abdelkarim Hassan ($3.5m DEF’s)
Pedro Miguel, also known as Ró Ró is a Portuguese-born, Qatari right wingback. He also can play as a center-back! Another one of those marauding fullbacks who has a high assist potential. At only $3.5m, he costs you nothing… If you are having a gut feeling then why not?🤪
On the other hand, Abdelkarim Hassan is a left-sided center-back who has a reputation of producing rockets from out of nowhere! He has a more impressive record in terms of goals as compared to Ró Ró, as he’s scored 15 goals in 130 apps for his country! Another potential gem here. It’s either Ró Ró or Hassan, your choice🙂

ECUADOR 🇪🇨
- Nickname: La Tri
- Current FIFA Rank: 44
- Manager: Gustavo Alfaro
- Formation: 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1 / 4-4-2
📸 26-MAN SQUAD LIST:
🎁Ecuador Predicted Starting 11:
🔑 KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR:
⭐ Pervis Estupiñán ($4.5m DEF)
Since moving to Brighton in the summer from Villarreal, Estupiñán has caught a lot of attention among many FPL players! He’s got a couple of assists already in the PL… 2 goals & an assist + 5 clean sheets in 17 apps in the WC qualifiers shows his attacking threat + he also has a decent CS potential to back it up! He nearly averaged a shot per game in the qualifiers which is pretty high for a defender! On some set pieces as well… A left back with the number 7 shirt on his back is surely one of the most exciting assets in the game, isn’t it?
⭐ Enner Valencia ($6.5m FWD)
Captain of the La Tri in this edition of the World Cup, Enner Valencia is a 33 year-old veteran who is already a legend for the Ecuadorian national team! Valencia scored all 3 of Ecuador’s goals in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, they failed to qualify for the 2018 edition but 8 years later they are back in the grandest stage again! He plays for Fenerbahçe & is currently the top scorer in the Turkish Süper Lig with 13 goals in just 12 apps so the former West Ham striker is in top form going into the World Cup! Expect him to start in left wing most probably with Estrada up top. Another plus point of owning Enner is that he is the main penalty taker for Ecuador!
⭐ Moisés Caicedo ($5.5m MID)
This man is next in line to take penalties when Valencia is not on the pitch, Caicedo is an all action box to box midfielder! He can chip in with a goal or two which makes him a solid fantasy asset particularly because of his price and also because of the “Ball Recovery” rule! Those different routes to points make the current Brighton midfielder one of the best budget midfielders in the game! 2 goals & 4 assists in qualifying & nearly 2 shots per game on average, Moisés will have the responsibility to defend, dictate the play & even get forward at every opportunity in this year’s World Cup as he is one of the vital cogs in this side!
💎 Michael Estrada ($5m FWD) / Jeremy Sarmiento ($5m MID)
Estrada(striker) is expected to start for the La Tri! He has forced his way into the starting XI for Alfaro’s side for about a year now and if he manages to finish off the chances he gets he could be a gem! 6 goals & 2 assists to his name in the qualifiers and 3 goals in Liga MX for Cruz Azul so far this season, he’ll look to make his mark in his first World Cup!
On the other hand, Sarmiento isn’t nailed at all but is a very exciting young talent & could do damage after coming off the bench in any game! If Alfaro decides to start him, then the 20 year-old could prove to be a cracking differential in the group stages! Surprise surprise, he’s another Ecuadorian who plies his trade for Brighton and since he’s played in the Premier League, no doubt he’ll be confident of making a mark in the big stage whenever he gets his opportunity to shine!

SENEGAL 🇸🇳

- Current FIFA Rank: 18
- Manager: Aliou Cissé
- Formation: 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1
📸 26-MAN SQUAD LIST:
🎁Senegal Predicted Starting 11:
Injury update– Mane is ruled out of the World Cup due to an injury.
🔑 KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR:
⭐ Ismaïla Sarr ($6.5m FWD)
With Mané almost certain to be out for the first couple of games, the responsibility falls on the Watford winger, Ismaïla Sarr to deliver the goods in Mané’s absence! 6 goals & 4 assists in 17 appearances so far this season, he’s been blowing hot & cold in the last couple of seasons and has been struggling to find consistency! He might be the first choice penalty taker as long as Mané is out. With a World Cup under his belt already and already experiencing playing in the England’s top two divisions & winning the AFCON earlier this year, the 24 year-old is an experienced campaigner & might prove to be a solid differential in the group stages atleast!
⭐ Idrissa Gueye ($5.5m MID)
The Evertonian won’t get you many attacking returns but he provides real value at his price due to the “Ball recovery” points system! Being one of the senior members of the team along with quite a few others, Senegal have a solid looking squad even if Mané doesn’t feature & will rely heavily on their midfield to do the job well! If you go for 3 premium attackers then you have to sneak in a couple of mids below $6m & Gueye could be a smart option!
💎 Fodé Ballo-Touré ($4m DEF)
With the surprise exclusion of Saliou Ciss from the 26-man World Cup squad, the responsibility will fall in the shoulders of the current AC Milan left back, Fodé Ballo-Touré! It’s not easy to fill Ciss’s boosts especially with the left back being one of the vital cogs in Senegal’s AFCON triumph earlier this year but as they say “Someone’s misfortune brings opportunity for someone else” hence the 25 year old Rossoneri left back has the opportunity to make a name for himself in the grandest stage of all & at only $4m he could prove to be a proper gem!
NETHERLANDS 🇳🇱
- Nickname: Oranje
- Current FIFA Rank: 8
- Manager: Louis van Gaal
- Formation: 3-4-1-2 / 3-4-3
📸 26-MAN SQUAD LIST:
🎁 Netherlands Predicted Starting 11:
Injury update- Depay is back in training, but is not fully fit and won’t start the first game vs Senegal as confirmed by coach Van Gaal. Janssen is expected to take the slot.
🔑 KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR
⭐ Denzel Dumfries ($6m DEF)
This man is a must-have I feel. He is listed as a defender in the game but plays mostly as a right winger. We saw last year at the Euros how dangerous he can be & all the fantasy managers who played Euro fantasy know how brilliant a fantasy asset he is! Nothing much to say here, all I’ll say is that this marauding Dutch right wing back will get chances and will create chances & with the Oranje having one of the best center backs in the world in their ranks, a clean sheet or two will come as well! Just note that he’s picked up an injury in Inter’s last game before the break… He has trained well recently & if he’s fully fit and available, then just get him in your team without thinking twice about it!
⭐ Steven Bergwijn ($7m MID) / Memphis Depay ($8.5m FWD)
OOP alert 📢
Bergwijn is expected to start up front for the Oranje in this World Cup so he might just be the best attacking asset for them as long as Depay doesn’t feature! Since moving to Ajax last summer from Tottenham, he’s scored 10 goals and provided 3 assists in the league & Champions League combined which shows he’s hit form exactly at the right time.
Memphis Depay, if fully fit is no doubt the best attacking asset from the Dutch side… So much so, he has a strong case of being one of the best assets in the game across all the teams! But unfortunately, he’s injured currently and is expected to miss the Oranje’ opening game against Senegal. He is one of the main reasons why the Dutch have qualified for the World Cup. He scored 12 goals & provided 6 assists in just 10 apps in the qualifiers & also played a vital role in the Euros last year! He’s only featured a couple of times for Barcelona this season & has been out for nearly 2 months since picking up a hamstring injury in the Netherlands’ 2-0 win against Poland back in September! He’s an avoid for now, but if he’s back fit in MD2, then he could be a must have against Ecuador & Qatar in MD2 & 3 respectively👀
Note: He has trained recently so who knows, he might be fit for MD1 even.
⭐ Virgil van Dijk ($6m DEF)
Virgil missed last year’s Euro with a long term injury but as the captain of the Oranje, he’s set to play a major role in this year’s World Cup campaign! After failing to qualify for the last World Cup in Russia which sent a few shockwaves across the globe the Dutch will be eager to go deep into the tournament this time around. He’s won it all with Liverpool and knows how to handle pressure in big games! Apart from his world class defensive abilities & composure at the back, Virgil poses a big aerial threat in attack and can take a surprise set piece here and there as well! He’s not been in the best of forms recently but in a back 3, being the main man, I’m sure he’ll orchestrate things well and the Dutch will keep a clean sheet or two in their WC 2022 journey!
💎 Cody Gakpo ($7m FWD)
The in-form 23 year-old PSV youngster is almost certain to start the first game against Senegal after van Gaal confirmed that Depay won’t be available for Matchday 1(🤷♂️). Gakpo already has 9 goals and 12 assists in 14 apps in the Eredivisie this season & he’s also got 5 attacking returns in the Europa League as well!
Gakpo is an agile dribbler, a very good ball carrier with excellent awareness, vision & long range shooting. He normally plays as an inverted left winger at PSV & with Wijnaldum missing the World Cup due to injury we expect Gakpo to start in the attacking midfield position or in left wing in case van Gaal decides to go with the 3-4-3 formation!

ENGLAND 🏴
- Nickname: The Three Lions
- Current FIFA Rank: 5
- Manager: Gareth Southgate
- Formation: 3-4-3 / 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1
📸 26-MAN SQUAD LIST:
🎁 England Predicted Starting 11’s:
🔑 KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR:
⭐ Harry Kane ($11m FWD)
Last edition’s Golden Boot winner & England’s main man up front will look to add to his golden Boot collection one again as he has the responsibility to lead the English national team in the World Cup this time out! England finished 4th in the 2018 FIFA World Cup & then lost in the final of the 2021 Euro against Italy so no doubt they’ll look to go a few steps further in their search for a long awaited glory at the big stage! Kane scored 12 goals in the WC qualifiers and is one of the most explosive fantasy assets! The Spurs living legend is not only a proper goalscorer but also a fantastic playmaker so his all round skills will be in display at Qatar and England fans will be hoping that he guides them to glory!
⭐ Kieran Trippier ($5m DEF)
We could’ve put Trippier in the “gem” category but he’s almost a must have actually🔥 Since moving to Newcastle from Atlético Madrid last winter, Trippier has gone up a level and has been in terrific form ever since then! He got injured in the latter part of last season but has really been instrumental in Newcastle’s resurgence! 3 goals & 4 assists + 7 clean sheets in 20 apps for the Toon this year in the Premier League shows he should definitely start at RB or even LB for England!
He had an outstanding 2018 World Cup so again he’ll have a vital role to play this time around as well…
⭐ Declan Rice ($6.5m MID)
Rice? Ummm… Why? He is a DM, he doesn’t get many attacking returns, right? Yes, correct. He isn’t really a fantasy asset in terms of G+A threat but I picked him here because of the “Ball Recovery” pts… You’ll normally see Declan Rice run and move all over the pitch, he’ll tackle, he’ll intercept, he’ll break the play, etc… All leads to BR points which will be very important in the official WC fantasy game! Of course you can’t own all premium/mid-priced players & you got to have a couple of $6m-ish or below players in your team to fit in a couple of premiums elsewhere so no doubt the West Ham captain will pick up those BR points and help your squads massively and yes, he doesn’t score/assist much but he certainly has a rocket shot in him & can head home from any set piece so keep an eye out for that😉
💎 Bukayo Saka ($8m MID)
Saka is really living up to his high expectations of going up a level! He has been one of the vital cogs in Arteta’s Arsenal side who now sit at the top of the Premier League table!
20 attacking returns in the league last season & 11 attacking returns already this time around is quite something in a 15 month span! He might as well start at right wing but England have lots & lots of options! Saka’s plus point is that he can play at LWB as well so let’s see what Southgate does! He is a gem of a fantasy asset if he plays at RW so watch out!

IRAN 🇮🇷
- Nickname: Team Melli

- Manager: Carlos Queiroz
- Formation: 4-2-3-1 / 4-4-2 / 4-1-4-1
📸 26-MAN SQUAD LIST:
🎁 Iran Predicted Starting 11:
🔑 KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR:
⭐ Mehdi Taremi ($7m FWD)
The 30 year-old Iranian striker couldn’t be heading into the World Cup in a better form, could he? Taremi has reached crazy heights in the last few years, scoring 20+ goals in each of the past three seasons! He already has 11 goals & 7 assists to his name so far this season for FC Porto and will be looking to get off the mark in the grandest stage of all after failing to register a single goal 4 years ago in Russia!
⭐ Alireza Beiranvand (* GK) / Ehsan Hajsafi ($3.5m DEF)
The remarkable story of him being homeless for quite some time during his teenage years in order to become a professional footballer, Alireza Beiranvand’s dream came true in the 2018 World Cup in Russia where he was a superstar for his country inspite of being knocked out of the group stages in unfortunate circumstances! The goalie showed the whole world how good a keeper he is with his heroic saves across all three group stage matches! I thought that it won’t be too long until he got a big move in Europe but it just didn’t work out for him! He moved to Royal Antwerp(Belgium) from Persepolis in 2020, then got loaned to Boavista(Portugal) where he found starts hard to come by too, so eventually is back again at Persepolis! Iran are expected to be tight at the back again so expect some more Beiranvand heroics in the biggest stage of all!
Since the first choice Iranian keeper hasn’t been priced up yet, I’m giving you an alternative just in case Beiranvand is priced up a bit high by the FIFA towers. It’s the experienced, 32 year-old, Iran’s captain for the second World Cup in a row, Ehsan Hajsafi! The left back is only $3.5m & has an eye for goal so you never know!
⭐ Alireza Jahanbakhsh ($5.5m MID)
The former Brighton man plies his trade in the Eredivisie these days for Feyenoord! The tricky winger is nailed in the Iranian team. He scored 5 goals in the qualifiers & again will want to get off the mark in the World Cup after failing to register a single goal in Russia 4 years ago! He has a couple of Europa League goals under his belt so far this season so he is going into the World Cup in some sort of form.
💎 Sardar Azmoun ($5.5m FWD)
Azmoun has seen very limited game time since signing for Bayer Leverkusen this year! He plied his trade in Russia for around 9 years for big clubs like Rubin Kazan, Rostov & Zenit Saint Petersburg where he scored almost around 100 goals combined. He’s scored 41 goals in just 65 apps for his country, so if you don’t have money to pick Taremi then Azmoun is a very good alternative to have in your team!

UNITED STATES 🇺🇸
- Nickname: The Stars and Stripes
- Current FIFA Rank: 16
- Manager: Gregg Berhalter
- Formation: 4-3-3
📸 26-MAN SQUAD LIST:
🎁 USA Predicted Starting 11:
🔑 KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR:
⭐ Christian Pulisic ($7.5m MID)
The United States have a lot of youth talent in their ranks and they all will be on the show this winter in Qatar! Pulisic has had a stop start kinda career so far at Chelsea mainly due to injuries but he mostly chips in with goals & assists whenever he plays! The rapid American winger scored 7 goals in the WC qualifiers and is the main penalty taker for Berhalter’s team!
⭐ Weston McKennie ($6m MID)
The 24 year-old Juventus man has a reputation of chipping in with vital goals in crucial moments and no doubt he’ll have his say in this World Cup! He is expected to lineup in the right side of a 3 man midfield and he is that sort of player who loves to get in the box at every opportunity! A million and a half cheaper than Pulisic and rightly so because he plays in midfield & doesn’t take penalties but what he does have is the advantage of “Ball Recovery” points which could come in very handy!
⭐ Antonee Robinson ($4m DEF)
Fulham’s Antonee Robinson is an energetic left back who bombs forward with purpose at every opportunity. His athleticism, lung-busting runs from the deep are always admired and all of his qualities will be on display in the beautiful stadiums across Qatar! In a group where either one of USA, Wales or Iran could go through, you’d think a USA defender wouldn’t be a bad pick at all particularly as they might keep things tight in these games because they know that they have an abundance of talent in the final third!
💎 Giovanni Reyna ($7m FWD) / Brenden Aaronson ($6m MID)
They both are absolute gems but the problem with picking them is that they both aren’t nailed and might be fighting for one spot! Who knows both might play but the uncertainty should put us off on picking either of them but the fact that one of them might play is a big plus because you could punt on Reyna/Aaronson in Matchday 3 when they face Iran which could potentially turn out to be a do-or-die!

WALES 🏴
- Nickname: The Dragons
- Current FIFA Rank: 19
- Manager: Robert Page
- Formation: 3-4-3 / 5-3-2 / 4-4-2
📸 26-MAN SQUAD LIST:
🎁 Wales Predicted Starting 11:
🔑 KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR:
⭐ Gareth Bale ($8m FWD)
Bale’s dreams of ending Wales’ 64-year wait to qualify for the World Cup was successful as they beat Ukraine in the playoff final to book their spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar! Bale hasn’t played much club football of late. He’s made 12 apps since signing for Los Angeles FC & has only got 3 starts in them… But around 30 mins played per game is still good for a player who’s had so many injuries over the years. Bale is a massive game player! He got the most G+A in both the Euros (2016 & 2021) for Wales and was the highest scorer in the WC qualifiers for the Dragons so he knows what it takes to perform in the big stage and despite of his fitness issues he is still the best asset to own from the Welsh National team!
⭐ Aaron Ramsey ($7.5m MID)
Another player who knows what it takes to perform at the big stage is the former Arsenal man, Aaron Ramsey. Yet another experienced player who’s not been getting much starts at their club but certainly knows how to make the most of the limited game time that he’s getting & be ready to play for the big tournament! He was injured in the last internationals as Rob Page tried different combos in midfield but I expect him to be back in the starting lineup & partner alongside another veteran, the former Liverpool man, Joe Allen in the middle of the park!
⭐ Kieffer Moore ($6m FWD)
The height & strength of Moore will be very crucial for Wales in their upcoming World Cup campaign! He is not nailed but I expect him to start atleast 2 out of the 3 group games! He is in decent form, scoring a brace against Spurs at the Vitality a couple of weeks ago & also bagging a goal against Everton last weekend. He always poses a threat in the air so when Wales are pegged back, they’ll play on the counter & might put crosses in the box & ask him to attack those crosses & he thrives to play in that role!!!
💎 Wayne Hennessey ($4.5m GK) / Neco Williams ($4.5m DEF) / Connor Roberts ($4m DEF)
The 35-year-old veteran goalkeeper was the hero in the playoff win against Ukraine! He made 9 saves in total including some stunning saves which inspired Wales to finally end their 64-year wait! Danny Ward has seen an upturn in his form, so he has a case to start ahead of Hennessey but I don’t think Rob Page will make too many tweaks in the squad which guided them to the World Cup!
If you are worried about Hennessey then the two wing-backs, Neco Williams & Connor Roberts are safer picks! They both are very attacking and both bomb forward with purpose. As the rules of the official game are more or less similar to the Champions League game, you can pick a budget Welsh defender & if they don’t return, you can sub them out so you don’t have to worry too much if they blank. The upside is certainly there👍
