World Cup Fantasy 2022 Comparison to FPL, UCL & Euro Fantasy

The official World Cup Fantasy 2022 is finally live and so many are excited to play the fantasy game for the biggest sport event in the world. Although the game hasn’t yet fully launched and not all players are available to select, we still can know a lot about the rules and compare it to the previous version in 2018 as well as other popular football fantasy games.

The game is very familiar according to selection of 15 players (2 GK, 5 DF, 5 MD, and 3 FW) within the budget of €100 million, starting 11 of them in one of the acceptable formats (1 GK, minimum of 3 DFs, minimum of 3 MDs, and minimum 1 FW), and selecting a captain to score double points. Same as UCL & Euro Fantasy, each Matchday includes different days as it affects substitutions and captaincy. You can check Beginner’s Guide, as general rules and tips are fully explained there. In this article, we go for a comparison between FIFA World Cup Fantasy 2022 and other football fantasy games including FPL, UCL & Euro Fantasy 2020.

2022 FIFA World Cup Fantasy: Similarities & Differences from FPL, UCL & Euro Fantasy

Scoring

While FIFA World Cup Fantasy 2018 had almost the same scoring rules as FPL or UCL Fantasy, the scoring system this year is different from any similar game we know.

Here is the highlight of the most important differences:

  • Appearance: Players get +1 point if they play 60 minutes or more, while in other fantasy games this number is +2 for playing 60+ minutes (and +1 for playing less than 60).
  • Clean Sheet: Goalkeepers & Defenders get +5 points, while in other fantasy games this number is +4. The other difference is: a Goalkeeper must play 70+ minutes to get a Clean Sheet point instead of 60+ minutes (for Defenders it’s 60+ like other games).
  • Goal Scored: Defenders get +7 points for each goal! Midfielders & Forwards get the same number of +5 points. For the other fantasy games, this number is +6 for Defenders, +5 for Midfielders, and +4 for Forwards.
  • Tackles: (only) Midfielders get +1 point for every 3 tackles, similar to Ball Recovery points in UCL Fantasy.
  • Key Passes: (only) Midfielders get +1 point for every 2 key passes, as we never saw this point in other popular fantasy games.
  • Shots on target: (only) Forwards get +1 point for every 2 shots on target, again a rule which was never seen before.

Conclusion: in this scoring point system, attacking defenders and premium forwards are more valuable than before, since they get more points for clean sheets/goals/shots. Defensive midfielders are also valuable in this game like UCL Fantasy, as they are often cheap options with potential tackle points.

Substitutions

Substitution works the same as UCL & Euro Fantasy, as well as the 2018 version of the game: You can manually sub in any player from your bench who has not yet played. If you sub out a player who has already played, you will lose their points and you will not be able to sub them in again. This rule will let you get the most points out of your 15 players if you play them in the right order according to their fixtures.

Conclusion: Similar to UCL & Euro Fantasy, fantasy players should look for 15 players with a high chance of scoring points according to the substitution rule, contrary to FPL where only around 12 (or even 11) players with high scoring potential find their way to the teams.

Captaincy

Captaincy also works the same as UCL & Euro Fantasy, as well as the 2018 version of the game: You can manually captain any player who has not yet played. If you change your captain from a player who has already played to a new player (who is yet to play), you will lose the double points for the previous captain and you will not be able to change the captaincy back to them, instead, your new captain will get double points. This rule will also help you get the most points out of your captaincy options if you select them in the right order according to their fixtures.

Conclusion: As each matchday includes different days like UCL & Euro Fantasy, you should consider different captaincy options playing on different days of the same matchday and play/captain them in the right order to achieve the most points from your captain.

Transfers

The number of free transfers is similar to UCL & Euro Fantasy, but a bit different from the 2018 version of the game. You will have 2 free transfers during the group stage (there was only 1 free transfer in World Cup Fantasy 2018) and unlimited free transfers before the beginning of the knockout phase. During the knockout phase, there are almost similar numbers of free transfers as UCL & Euro Fantasy for each round (4, 5, and 6).

Conclusion: Similar to UCL & Euro Fantasy, managers should plan their free transfers according to the fixtures, and even save them for injured, eliminated, and under-performed players.

Chips (Boosters)

World Cup Fantasy Boosters

There were 3 chips available in FIFA World Cup Fantasy 2018: Wildcard, Maximum Captaincy, and Bench Boost. The first two are still the same this year (although Chips are called Boosters and Maximum Captaincy is named Power Captain this year), and Bench Boost is replaced by 12th Man as it’s the first we see this chip in a fantasy game.

  • Wildcard: the same as we know and it can be used on matchday 2, 3, 5, 6, or 7 as we have unlimited transfers for matchday 1 and 4.
  • Power Captain: when you use, you won’t select any captain and the most scoring player in your squad will automatically be selected as your captain and get double points.
  • 12th Man: you can add one extra player to your team regardless of budget or team restrictions and you will get their points additionally, which means you will have 12 scoring players instead of 11. Notice that this player cannot be substituted, transferred, or captained.

Each chip (booster) can be used once and multiple chips cannot be used together on the same matchday.

Conclusion: Each manager should have a plan before the tournament begins, based on fixtures, forms, and of course a strategy of “when to use each chip”. The group stage and round of 16 (Matchday 1-4) are usually the time to achieve the highest points as weaker teams are still in the tournament.
