FPL GW9 Wildcard Team & Drafts to Consider | Wildcard Guide

The end of FPL GW8 means we head into the first and only international break before the 2022 world cup. The international break has always been one of the preferred time for FPL managers to play their wildcard and it is no different this time as well with a lot of managers playing/or planning on playing their wildcard chip before FPL GW9 to target the fixture swings and build team value going into FPL GW9. In this blog, let’s take a look at multiple FPL GW9 wildcard drafts with GW12 projections & potential transfers, fixture analysis & players to target list, Pros & cons of GW9 vs GW12/13 wildcard.

Teams with good fixture swings from FPL GW9

  • Chelsea ~ Only two fixtures vs the top six till GW16(Man United in GW13, Arsenal in GW15)
  • Crystal Palace ~ Chelsea in GW9 is the only top six opposition Palace will face till the WC break in GW16
  • Bournemouth ~ Spurs in GW14 the only top six opposition Bournemouth will face till the WC break in GW16
  • Leicester City ~ Two great fixtures vs Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth, only Man City in GW14 the top six fixture the foxes have till WC break.
  • Everton ~ Decent run of fixtures from GW9 to GW16, good for the bench including the likes of Patterson at just 4.0 million.
  • Aston Villa ~ A decent run of games for Gerrard’s Villa and they have some good games coming up as well. The likes of Bailey, Digne all decent options to consider. Again only two games vs the top six teams till GW16.
  • Fulham ~ No games vs the big six till GW15, also play Bournemouth in GW11.
  • Newcastle United ~ Fixtures till GW16 on the whole look good with alternating easy and tough fixtures for Newcastle. The Magpies have done well against tough teams this season.

West Ham have decent run of fixtures but their form doesn’t warrant them a mention here. The europa conference league will also be happening and them playing Thursday every week is also a cause for rotation concerns.

Pros of playing Wildcard in FPL GW9:

  • Setup a nice team for GW9 till the WC break keeping in the fixture congestion in mind and spreading the budget
  • Plan effectively for the blank in GW12 for Arsenal and Man City
  • Few other teams including the likes of Everton, Leicester, Bournemouth, and West ham have a decent run of fixtures. There could be a lot of good FPL assets emerging from these teams and you could jump on them early.

Cons of playing Wildcard in FPL GW9:

  • Cannot dead end the team to the blank gameweek in GW12 and WC in GW13 for the fixture swing there.
  • Some tough 50-50 calls to remove in-form players like Jesus and going after players with good fixtures.
  • Liverpool assets pose the biggest dilemma. Going without the likes of Salah, TAA frees up funds but they could be back in form in no time. Tough call here to whether go with them directly in GW9 are have a route to them in GW12.
  • Lack of clarity on a few teams because of the postponements. Chelsea have not had a PL fixture under Potter, Brighton will play under Roberto De Zerbi only after the break.
  • Leeds, Brighton, and Palace would have gone without a month of PL game.

GW9 Fixture Swings vs GW13 Fixture Swings

As you could from the above comparison of GW9-12 and GW13-16 the team having different swings mostly the big six boys with Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool, and Man United. Although they have a tough run of games GW9 WC would still warrant a place for attackers from Man City and Arsenal based on form, which makes the difference in GW13 WC only less especially if you find a way to get Liverpool assets at the right time(GW12) when Arsenal and Man City blank.

GW13 onwards also sees a tough run of fixtures for another big six teams, Chelsea which again offers a direct route into the expensive assets, Reece to TAA/City defender/Perisic. Man United also have a good three fixtures from GW14 onwards but their assets being low priced means they could be brought back in through multiple routes. Having said that it’s ultimately team dependent and if you have a decent team close to the FPL GW9 wildcard drafts mentioned below then you can definitely hold it for GW13 wildcard.

Teams with tough fixture swings from FPL GW9

  • Arsenal ~ Spurs, Liverpool, and Chelsea from GW9 to GW15 with a blank in GW12.
  • Liverpool ~ Tough three games from GW9 to GW11 vs Brighton, Arsenal, and Man City but the fixtures turn after that.
  • Brighton ~ Liverpool, and Spurs in GW9 & 10 and Man City in GW13. But exciting games vs Brentford(A) & Nottingham Forest(H) in GW11 & 12. New manager Roberto De Zerbi is known to be attacking.
  • Man United ~ Man City(GW9), Newcastle(GW11), Spurs(GW12), and Chelsea(GW13) make it a hard run for United. Fixtures ease from GW14.

Not mentioning Man City as they are pretty much fixture-proof even though they play a few top six teams. The same applies for Spurs too who face Arsenal in the NLD(GW9), Man United(GW12), and Liverpool(GW15).

Players to target on GW9 Wildcard(Team Wise)

  • Chelsea ~ Reece James(£6.0 Million), Fofana(£4.4 Million), Cucurella(£5.2 Million), Sterling(£10 Million) and Kepa((£4.4 Million Might be first choice now)
  • Crystal Palace ~ Zaha(£7.2 Million), Guaita(£4.5 Million), Mitchell(£4.4 Million)
  • Bournemouth ~ Solanke(£5.7 Million), Billing(£5.3 Million), Marcus Tavernier(£4.9 Million)
  • Leicester City ~ Maddison(£7.9 Million), Justin(£4.3 Million), Castangne(£4.4 Million), Iversen(£3.9 Million)
  • Everton ~ Gordon(£5.6 Million), Patterson(£4.1 Million), Begovic(£4.0 Million), Pickford(£4.5 Million)
  • Aston Villa ~ Digne(£4.7 Million), Bailey(£4.7 Million), Ramsey(£5.2 Million), Mings(£4.3 Million)
  • Fulham ~ Mitrovic(£6.9 Million), Andreas Pereira(£4.6 Million), Reed(£4.5 Million)
  • Newcastle United ~ Pope(£5.2 Million), Trippier(£5.3 Million)
  • Nottingham Forest ~ Neco Williams(£4.1 Million), Brennan Johnson(£5.9 Million), Taiwo Awoniyi(£5.8 Million)
  • Brentford ~ Raya(£4.6 Million) and Toney(£7.2 Million)

City, Liverpool, Spurs assets are not mentioned above as they are mostly fixture proof assets.

Bench fodder assets

  • 3.9 Million Goalkeepers: Turner, Iversen, Ortega, and Carson. Iversen the sensible choice as the other three players will block an Arsenal/Man City spot.
  • 3.9 Million defenders: Tomkins, Dummett, Vestergaard, Toti, Mosquera
  • 4.3 Million midfielders: Colback, Elneny, Iqbal, Chukwuemeka. Colback is the best as others are from the big six which will block a spot.
  • 4.4 Million forwards: Greenwood, Archer, Taylor

FPL GW9 Wildcard Drafts

FPL GW9 Wildcard Draft 1

GW9 Wildcard Draft(Left image) and GW12 Draft after making KDB to Salah in GW12(Right Image)

  • As seen in the above fixture ticker, Salah has a favorable fixture run from GW12- West Ham, Forest, Leeds, Spurs, and Southampton. The plan is to have KDB from GW9- GW11 and go to Salah from GW12- GW16. You can even go back to KDB to attack the GW15, and GW16 fixtures vs Fulham and Brentford.
  • The forward line is template with Haaland, Toney, and Mitrovic. Amongst non-premium forwards, Mitrovic and Toney are right up top and have scored more than even Jesus.
  • Zaha and Maddison are two in-form midfielders who have got good fixtures to target. Both of them have scored the joint most goal(4) amongst midfielders priced at 8.0 Million and below.

  • Martinelli has been one of the best enablers who has been doing really so far and at his price, he’s still a great option even though Arsenal have a tough few games to come.
  • The defence is made up of James, Cancelo, Guehi, Neco Williams, and Trippier.
  • Guaita is in goal as a 4.5 million option and if you feel a double palace defence is a stretch then you can go Raya(4.6 Million) or go with Begovic(4.0 Million) and Pickford(4.5 Million). You can also for Justin(4.3 Million for Guehi and hold Raya)

FPL GW9 Wildcard Draft 2

  • Son who scored a hattrick in GW8 is the second Premium option in team alongside Haaland
  • Solanke(5.7) slots in as the third striker option. Bournemouth are in terrible form but have great fixtures to get back in form- Brentford, Fulham, Leicester, Southampton in the next 4 games. Solanke is the Talisman for Bournemouth with 29 goals, 7 assists from 46 games in Championship last season. If Bournemouth still continue to struggle, he can be benched or replaced by Maupay(6.1) who has good fixtures from GW13- Palace, Fulham, Leicester, Bournemouth.
  • GW12 blank can be navigated even without making any transfers due to a strong bench.
  • No Salah/KDB could backfire in the longer run with the budget spread out in the squad.
  • Enough funds left to do Son to Salah in GW12 or upgrade a defender to TAA or upgrade Solanke, offering flexibility.

FPL GW9 Wildcard Draft 3

GW9 Wildcard Draft(Left image) and GW12 Draft without any transfers(Right Image)

  • Starting with Salah in GW9 Wildcard Draft to attack the home fixture vs Potter less Brighton side. Doing this can help you take a punt on Kane in GW11 and GW12. Kane has Everton(H) and United(A) in GW11 whereas Haaland has Liverpool(A) and blank during those fixtures. The plan would obviously be to go back to Haaland from GW13.

Before going further do vote in FPL GW9 Captaincy Poll below. Haaland returned in GW8 to make it 7/7 successful returns for our Captaincy Metrics this season. Do vote in the captaincy poll for this week below. The captaincy metrics blog from @AK_FPL1 will be posted soon based on the votes.

FPL GW9 Wildcard Draft 4

GW9 Wildcard Draft(Left image) and GW12 Draft (Right Image)

  • Guaita in goal ahead of Nick Pope due to the fixture run for Palace. Newcastle have United in GW11 and Spurs in GW13 so shying away from Trippier/Pope double-up is also a good option. Palace don’t have any Top 6 fixtures from GW10 till GW16 and Guaita can well be the next Pope and you can have a chance to get ahead of the curve on GW9 Wildcard with Guaita at just 1.2% ownership.
  • Defence heavy draft with James, Cancelo, Trippier and TAA.
  • Plan to do Son to Salah in GW12 for the Liverpool fixture run which will enable you to have two Liverpool assets easily with just one transfer.

FPL GW9 Wildcard Draft 5

  • Threemium Draft with Kane, Haaland and Salah
  • Kane is enjoying a consistent season and has still gone under the radar despite getting 6 goals, 2 assists from 7 games and hasn’t blanked since GW2.
  • Attacking the GW9 home fixture with Salah vs Brighton. It would first game for Brighton with their new manager and Liverpool are also slowly finding their touch back with Jota, Thiago all back.
  • No Maddison is the major flaw in this draft. Maddison can be bought in by downgrading Cancelo to a 4.5 defender and Upgrading Eze to Maddison. Going without Cancelo is also another risk.
