FPL Gameweek 5 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold and Sell

Quick turnaround between weekend and midweek games and work commitments means we’re going to be crisp with the data that we’re using to back our picks for FPL Gameweek 5. A combination of eye-test and stats has been used for these suggestions. So here goes!

FPL Gameweek 5 Transfer Tips: Two players to BUY

1) Ilkay Gundogan (7.6, MID, Manchester City)

FPL Gameweek 5 Transfer Tips: Two players to BUY ~ Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan has been making his signature late runs into the box this season, much like he did on that purple patch of goals two seasons ago. At times, he’s looked almost like a second striker arriving into the box playing off the striker and thus he appears a significant threat on the eye-test. We picked him out on our ‘players to watch’ two weeks ago and now, having gotten a rest against Crystal Palace before coming on as a sub to assist a goal, he looks primed to start 3 of the next 4.

He’s amassed an xG of 1.13 and an xA of 0.78 from his 4 appearances this season and we think we could be a strong differential to climb up the ranks, starting this midweek against Nottingham Forest.

2) Pascal Gross (5.8, MID, Brighton)

FPL Gameweek 5 Transfer Tips: Two players to BUY ~ Pascal Gross

Another player we picked out on the ‘players to watch’ two weeks ago, same time as Gundogan and he’s our second BUY suggestion. Gross has been around for a long time but he’s flitted in and out of fantasy football consideration especially owing to rotation and limited minutes in recent seasons under Graham Potter. But Gross has not started every game this season and is playing in an advanced midfield role. He tends to take few shots but they’re often from high-quality areas when he does and he’s been creating quality chances all season. Even though he’s off penalties to MacAllister, he’s shown strong threat to produce 3 goals and 1 assist in his 4 games this season.

He’s producing a pretty remarkable 0.49 xG and 0.39 xA per appearance this season and has a good set of fixtures to come.

Do vote in the captaincy poll for this week below. The captaincy metrics blog from @AK_FPL1 will be posted based on the votes. The metrics had a 30/38 record last season and so far has a 4/4 record with Haaland topping the metrics in GW4 and returning with 34 points.

FPL Gameweek 5 Transfer Tips: Two players to HOLD

1) Gabriel Martinelli (6.4, MID, Arsenal)

FPL Gameweek 5 Transfer Tips: Two players to HOLD ~ Martinelli

I don’t think I should have to make a case here because I’m surprised anyone’s considering selling but on the back of 139k transfers out already, fourth highest amongst mids, here we are.

Martinelli may have blanked against Fulham but the numbers suggest he was unlucky to do so with 7 shots and 5 key passes. He’s producing at nearly 0.80 xGI per 90 minutes for an in-form Arsenal team and has played less than 90 minutes only once so far this season (77 mins against Bournemouth). He’s a gift at his price in this form. An easy hold.

2) Kieran Trippier (5.1, DEF, Newcastle United)

FPL Gameweek 5 Transfer Tips: Two players to HOLD ~ Trippier

The English right-back has 81k transfers out at the time of writing, third-highest amongst defenders. He has a daunting trip against Liverpool up next who are fresh from sticking 9 goals past Bournemouth. However, Liverpool have shown defensive frailties this season. With set-pieces in his locker, including an incredible direct-free kick threat as seen against Manchester City, Trippier can grab attacking returns against anyone. The same reason leads to him picking up key passes which help his case for bonus points.

He has a kind schedule after the Liverpool game and should be relatively free from rotation that will inevitably occur from the Champions League sides through the congested schedule through to the World Cup. Hold.

FPL Gameweek 5 Transfer Tips: Two players to SELL

1) Heung-Min Son (11.9, MID, Tottenham Hotspur)

FPL Gameweek 5 Transfer Tips: Two players to SELL ~ Heung Min Son

Again, let me preface this immediately by saying that I still think Son is a good fantasy asset and will likely end in the top 5 point-scorers by the end of the season. However, I’m recommending a SELL at this time purely because I don’t think he’s justifying his price as an FPL asset or a reliable captaincy option and hence I believe the funds can do more for managers spread elsewhere.

Despite taking 11 shots and making 8 key passes in 4 appearances this season, Son has only 1 assist, has an xGI per 90 of 0.46, his lowest in the last 5 years and has now been subbed off for 3 games in a row. If you need the funds to attack other moves like Gross, Rodrigo, Gundogan, Diaz or even Sterling, I’m not against a move off Son at this time.

2) Matty Cash (4.8, DEF, Aston Villa)

FPL Gameweek 5 Transfer Tips: Two players to SELL ~ Cash

Still owned by a relatively huge 8.4% of FPL managers, a move off Matty Cash should be a relatively straightforward decision. Aston Villa are playing poorly, they’re struggling to keep clean sheets and not scoring enough goals for his attacking threat to provide value and also have Arsenal and Manchester City upcoming.

Add to that the fact that Veltman, Dunk and Dalot come in cheaper while Cucurella, Walker and Trippier are providing far superior value at 5.1 each – I’d be very surprised to see many active managers hold onto Cash much longer.

FPL Gameweek 5 Watchlist

Pervis Estupiñan

Trossard, back in an attacking role, Guedes and Odegaard are making an impression in the budget midfield category. Pervis Estupiñan 4.5 Milion priced wing back for Brighton, started and notched 3 key passes in a strong Brighton defense – he’s high up on my watchlist for defenders. Mitrovic continues to show that he’s essentially fixture-proof and a season-hold, for me.

Mason Mount, Jarrod Bowen and Bukayo Saka have previously been mentioned as ‘HOLD’s’ by me but I don’t think we’ve seen enough for them to even maintain that position. They’re all reasonable SELL contenders provided the funds can be used for a good option like Gundogan, Martinelli or Luis Diaz.

Even though Salah blanked in a 9-0, has looked a bit underconfident off late and has seen the second most sales of any player after Trent this week, he had a remarkably high xG of over 1 by himself and the blank was an anomaly. He seem’s like his starts should be fairly secure even as we enter a period of fixture congestion and is someone I would not consider selling at all, at the moment.
