FPL GW8 Fixture wise Review

Everton (0.86) 0 – 1 (1.74) West Ham

Everton came into this game fresh off a fighting draw against Manchester United but even 2 weeks of International break weren’t enough for star attackers Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin to get match fit. West Ham were defeated by Brentford last time around and the Hammers were keen to get back to winning ways in a tricky tie away at Goodison Park.

Both teams played variations of a 4-2-3-1, Alex Iwobi coming in for Everton pushing Doucoure back into a deeper midfield role while Rondon led the line again. West Ham were their usual attack while injury necessitated a change at right-back, Johnson coming in to replace Coufal. In the end, a sole set-piece header Ogbonna proved to be the difference in a game where Antonio, Bowen, and Gray looked actively lively.

Stat-King Michail Antonio (8.1, FWD) continued to put up quality numbers despite another game without a goal. He had a game-high xGI of 0.93 made up from 4 shots, 3 of which were in the box including 1 ‘big chance’ and 3 chances created to go with it.

Jarrod Bowen (6.3, MID) impressed again. He had 3 shots, all in the box, including one that was very well saved by Pickford late on and created 2 chances including 1 big chance ending with an xGI of 0.49.

Andros Townsend (5.6, MID) produced another very solid display with 5 chances created, a game-high in this category, notching an xA of 0.32.

Demarai Gray (5.8, MID) may have ended with an xGI of just 0.23 but he created 2 chances including a big chance that Iwobi failed to connect with and looks to subsequently not have counted towards his expected data as a result.

Honorable mentions to Iwobi (5.9, MID) who took 4 shots, all from inside the box and missed a big chance as well as Ben Godfrey (4.8, DEF) who racked up 3 shots all from inside the box.

Newcastle (0.55) 2 – 3 (1.58) Tottenham Hotspur

NEW - TOT ~ FPL GW8 Review

In their first game post the monumental takeover, Newcastle came up short against a Tottenham side that look like they’re slowly building in confidence. Newcastle played essentially a 4-1-3-2 with a very clear left sided skew to their positions and attacks, preferring to progress the ball from that side. Spurs were able to field Son who had been rumoured to have returned a positive Covid test and were aided in an improving showing by Harry Kane looking progressively better with every game as well as Ndombele in the hole and Hojbjerg from deep adjusting into their respective roles well.

A lively game where the returning Callum Wilson nodded Newcastle ahead early on from an overlapping run from Javier Manquillo (4m) before two exquisite finishes from Ndombele and then Kane put Spurs in control. They added an excellently worked third in added time of half time with Kane sliding Son for a tap in and after a late scare from a comical Dier own goal, they held off 10-men Newcastle to pick up all 3 points.

It was great to see Harry Kane (12.1, FWD) begin to look more like his usual self. The Englishmen had a game high xGI of 1, typically coming from his all action game of 2 shots, 1 in the box including a big chance as well as 2 chances created including 1 big chance. He produced a delightful finish running onto a terrific pass from Hojbjerg to get his first goal of the season.

Ndombele (5.8, MID) produced some interesting numbers playing in the number 10 role for Tottenham. The midfielder had a game high 5 shots, 4 from inside the box giving him an xGI of 0.83 and also had a game high 9 touches inside the penalty box. Another in the sub-6m midfielder category to keep an eye on to potentially make a mockery of his price tag.

Son (10.1, MID) took most set pieces again, helping him to 5 chances created (however 0 big chances) and was also on hand to score a tap in after some tidy football from Spurs giving him an xGI of 0.76 and another points return. His goal involvement for Spurs remains above 50%, an impressive number.

The returning Callum Wilson (7.3, FWD) marked his return with a goal 2 mins into the game using his predatory movement to sneak in ahead of Romero to nod in a cross, his only effort on goal. He also created 2 chances taking him to an xGI of 0.36, the highest for Newcastle. His talismanic status to the team and clinical finishing in front of goal mean that a fit Callum Wilson will always be value for money.

Saint-Maximin (6.8, FWD) was a livewire but failed to rack up any meaningful goal or assist threat. However, the frenchman’s quality on the ball and ball-carrying ability bode well for Wilson’s goal and point potential.
