Hi all, it’s Flair again! Absolutely loved the response to my previous value picks article, I really appreciate it. Love combining writing and FPL and here I go with another one ahead of FPL GW6.
FPL GW6 Value pick ~ GOALKEEPER
Raya (4.6M): The budget keeper bracket seems to be opening up! After writing about Guaita last GW, Raya has put himself in contention for this GW. With 25 points in 5 GWs, he’s a top 5 scoring GK already and has been an important part of Brentford’s rise in the PL. Their defensive stats have been excellent, comfortably the 2nd best defense in the league so far according to xGA (Expected Goals Against). This benefits from decent fixtures – the highest-rated team they’ve faced was a Lacazette/Auba-less Arsenal the opening week. Still, Brentford are a very data-driven side, with many models predicting them to do well, and look like they’ve adapted very impressively so far. Let’s not forget, they’re a promoted side!
The drawback for Raya is that Brentford haven’t proven themselves in tougher fixtures yet – with Liverpool, West Ham, Chelsea and Leicester still to come their impressive stats could come crashing down. Raya has made the 3rd-least saves of any team in the league so far so those huge hauls may not be forthcoming – Brentford’s progressive and possession-based style may not lend itself well for saves. Either way, I’m confident Raya has cemented himself as one of the best value keepers we have at the moment, with Brentford’s impressive acclimatization to the PL the main reason why.

FPL GW6 Value pick ~ DEFENDER
Marcos Alonso (5.8M): Alonso has been a FPL beast for years now, but one of the biggest concerns with him was how much he would play. Having started every PL (5) and CL (1) game this season, it looks like there’s reason to believe those fears should be evaporating. It’s worth remembering that when Tuchel first took over at Chelsea, he favored Alonso over Chilwell – starting the former in 7 of the first 12 before the infamous loss at West Brom. So we know that Tuchel did recognize Alonso’s talents from the start and does value him. Chilwell has been said to be struggling mentally (hope he gets well as soon as possible, never nice to see) and Alonso has barely put a foot wrong so far, with a goal and assist already. Form-wise, Alonso is firmly the first choice.
You may wonder, why am I making such a fuss over his minutes? This is because Alonso is one of the highest upside picks in the game. He has a goal and assist already, and this is no fluke – Alonso has a consistent record of strong attacking performance. His npxG+xA/90 for the last three seasons reads – .31, .27 and .26. Outstanding numbers for a defender! Not only that, but Chelsea have shown themselves to be one of the best defenses in the world – and their upcoming fixture run is the best in the league. Our main concern is how much he will play, not the worry of how he’ll perform when he does, and Tuchel has given us the reason for confidence.
However, it would be wrong to assume that such a potentially dynamic situation will remain static. Alonso lost his place after a calamitous performance against West Brom, and it serves as a reminder that his defensive ability isn’t at the level of Chilwell. Chilwell is an excellent player and one perfectly capable of challenging for Alonso’s spot when in the right place mentally – and the start against Villa in the cup could be the way back. Therefore, I wouldn’t call Alonso nailed – but with his excellent attacking stats, outstanding CS, and the best fixtures in the league. I believe he’s well worth the punt.

FPL GW6 Value pick ~ MIDFIELDER
Jarrod Bowen (6.3M): As Benrahma and Antonio enjoy much fanfare, one of Moyes’ most trusted lieutenants is left behind. Jarrod Bowen is a quality wide forward with the ability to take set-pieces who I believe is one of the best under-the-radar players to jump on this GW. His underlying stats this season are actually better than Benrahma – .45 npxG+xA vs .39 npxG+xA. Last season, he averaged just under a return every 90 with eight goals and five assists. What’s more, he’s up against a very depleted Leeds backline – Struijk is suspended, Koch and Llorente are both out with injuries and Ayling is uncertain. Next up, he faces promoted Brentford at home – while they have been impressive, this is a match that West Ham will expect to win comfortably. Both of these games hold great potential for Bowen and like Sarr, who wasn’t on many people’s radar this week, the Englishman can burst onto the scene at an enticing 0.8% ownership.
The presence of other mid-priced midfielders is the main reason players will be avoiding him, that and the “risk of a triple-up” – however, I believe it’s important to consider players individually, and Bowen makes a great case as an asset – the presence of Benrahma and Antonio shouldn’t play a major part in the decision making. I definitely see the appeal of Sarr or Gray, but Bowen has been performing similarly to both according to the underlying stats – a big day for West Ham with Bowen at the heart of it and he could be rising just as quickly as they did.

FPL GW6 Value Pick ~ FORWARD
Jamie Vardy (10.4M): A brief departure from my focus on cheaper picks to look at one of the most underrated players in the game currently. Vardy has consistently been one of the best strikers in the league, consistently ranking high in the Golden Boot race. Last season, in which his usual clinical finishing deserted him, sparked fears of a decline. However, with 4 returns in 5 games (3 goals and an assist) already this season those worries seem unfounded. I’m confident that Vardy is back to his best and should continue to be the excellent FPL asset we know him to be.
What makes him a great FPL asset? He’s almost always available and tends to play 90 every game. In Rodger’s 4-3-3 he’s the talisman of a strong Leicester attack, picking up plenty of bonus due to his poacher playstyle, and is also on penalties. PL goal tallies of 15, 23, 18, and 20 ensure one thing – Vardy knows how to find the back of the net. The biggest factor as to why I believe he’s value, though, is the fixtures – Leicester faces Burnley, Palace, Brentford, Arsenal, and Leeds in 5 of the next 6. The generous fixture run actually continues until GW16, so flat-track bully Vardy is a great set-and-forget pick for your side during that stretch.
