Hi reader, my name is Flair and will be writing for you for the first time of many (I hope)! In this article, I’ll be picking out a player or two in each position who I believe will prove very good value and explain why he is worth your consideration. The positives and negatives are assessed to give you the information you need to make the best decision possible for your FPL team.
FPL GW5 Value Picks- Goal Keeper
Vicente Guaita (4.5M) – Palace had one of the most impressive transfer windows of any club this summer, and with the additions of Andersen and Guehi their outgoing defenders have been more than adequately replaced. They boast the 3rd best defense according to expected goals against so far, which is impressive enough on its own until you realize that they were up against West Ham, Spurs, Chelsea and Brentford in a very challenging fixture run. Put into context, these achievements look even better.
For this reason, I believe Guaita could be the #1 keeper pick that many of us were looking for pre-season. As Palace’s defense experiences more matches together and increases in cohesion as the fixtures soon turn, they could become even better. However, manager Viera seems to be adopting a more possession-based approach, and despite the challenging fixtures so far Guaita is joint 7th worst for saves. So we may not end up seeing Martinez/Pope levels of last season!

FPL GW5 Value Picks- Defenders
Marcal and Ruben Semedo (4.6M/4.9M) – Wolves were one of the most intriguing propositions this season, with new manager Bruno Lage an unknown quantity. From what we’ve seen so far though, we should be expecting them to be a serious force! Most exciting to me is the prospects of Semedo and Marcal, with both turning in very impressive displays in GW4. Wolves, like Palace, are also doing well defensively with the 4th best defense according to expected goals despite a similarly difficult fixture run.
Lage has history with attacking fullbacks, and he seems to be in no mood to abandon his principles anytime soon. In 2018/19, Alex Grimaldo recorded 4 goals and 12 assists in 34 league games. On the opposite flank, Andre Almeida did his best to match his counterpart with 2 goals and 12 assists in 33 league games. This incredible level of performance excites me the most about the Wolves’ fullbacks. Semedo recorded an impressive xG of .83 with three shots vs Watford, racing through on goal twice while Marcal bagged himself two fantasy assists. Factor in the excellent fixture run and value prices and I am very enthusiastic about owning them for the foreseeable future.
However, it is worth acknowledging that both Marcal and Semedo have shown limited end product in seasons past – so expecting them to get an offensive return every other game is probably a stretch. Hoever and Ait-Nouri are capable backups and the high tempo game Lage plays may tire out his players, though lack of European competition helps when resting tired legs.

FPL GW5 Value Picks- Midfielder
Jack Grealish (8M) – Coming into the season, I was uncertain on Grealish. Minutes and role were both concerns for me, but after he’s seamlessly slotted into Pep’s system I wonder how I could ever have doubted him! The £100 million signing has started every one of the five games so far, with Pep showing unfraudulent-like tendencies we haven’t seen the likes of since 2017/18! Attacking returns haven’t been a problem either, with two goals and two assists already and an outstanding .67 npxG+xA in the league. The leaky nature of City’s opponents improves this, but let’s face it – adding a player as talented as him is only going to make his already impressive numbers even better.
Pep has said that he will play players who perform and investing a record amount in Grealish shows just how much he values him. While not afraid to bench players, Grealish has performed very strongly and shown no reason for Pep to doubt him. After all, this is an outstanding opportunity for the Englishman himself and he’s passing every test with flying colors! Ferran Torres has drawn attention away from Grealish, but I believe that those looking to play Pep roulette would do well to consider the Englishman – he looks like one of Pep’s most trusted players already.

FPL GW5 Value Picks- Forwards
Raul Jimenez (7.4M) – I believe Jimenez is one of the best and most undervalued forwards out there. A consistent scorer who hasn’t quite got there yet this season but will surely turn it around. I’m a firm advocate of the idea that fixtures breed form and with Brentford, Southampton, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Leeds coming up it seems very unlikely to me that he won’t be getting chances.
With 12 shots in the box and key passes this season (4th highest in the league), he is still clearly involved in the play though a total xG of 0.8 indicates the quality of these chances isn’t matching the volume. So why am I advocating for him? Well, there are multiple reasons. The main reason is that I am very confident that Bruno Lage knows who his main man is and will find ways to get him involved. Wolves are the 5th best for expected goals this season, so they are clearly able to create chances for their players – and Jimenez will be a part of this sooner rather than later.
He’s on pens, plays 90 every game, has a dream fixture run and boasts a great track record. In my eyes, Jimenez will be more than fine and the goals are coming very soon. At 4.6% ownership, I back him to be the next forward to drastically gain owners as DCL and Antonio have done.
