Gameweek 5 Analysis – Players To Buy | Hold | Sell Ahead Of FPL GW5

We are back with the FPL Gameweek 5 ~Buy, Hold, and Sell analysis article where FPL Insights picks 2 players in each category to help you navigate your FTs. With Calvert-Lewin out injured for a foreseeable future and Antonio facing a one-match ban, forwards dominate this week’s article.

Before going further, do vote in this week’s FPL GW5 allaboutfpl captaincy poll. The same will be available in the captaincy analysis and metrics blog written by @AK_FPL1. The metrics has been delivering consistently with a 100% record this year. Last week the metric predicted Salah as the best captaincy candidate and he returned once again in GW4. Stay tuned for the GW5 Captaincy metric to see who tops it. Link to all our FPL Gameweek 5 blogs.

The results and the captaincy metric blog will be published soon based on the votes.

RaĂşl JimĂ©nez | 7.4m | TSB – 4%

FPL Gameweek 5 Analysis - Players To ~Buy ~ Raul Jimenez

If you are one of many managers looking to replace DCL/Antonio, RaĂşl JimĂ©nez could be your solution. He has been under the radar due to the lack of his FPL outputs (no returns so far)

To be fair to him, Wolves as a team have been disappointing in terms of attacking returns despite playing eye-catching football! Wolves did not score a single goal until the last match, where the first goal quite ironically, was an own goal.

Here are some quick numbers that suggest Wolves should have had goals in the first three matches and probably more goals against Watford too!

Jiménez had a BC against Watford and also created one for his teammate. Being the frontman for Wolves and with great fixtures ahead, he is definitely one to look at!

Conor Gallagher | 5.6m | TSB – 4%

FPL Gameweek 5 Analysis - Players To ~Buy ~ Conor Gallagher

Brought in by more than 250k managers, Gallagher is the 6th most transferred-in player so far, and why not?

Since his start in GW2, he is the top for FPL points among midfielders (and 3rd overall). Such form and equally good underlying stats deserve attention!

Below are some underlying stats for him. Despite playing a match lesser, he’s put some amazing numbers. No mid-fielder has had more BC (big chances) or IT (Importance to Team) than him.

His stats are also not an artifact of an outlier GW. They split quite well across all the three matches he has played so far.

With such consistent stats and decent fixtures to follow (skipping GW5 against Liverpool), there’s hardly any doubt on why you should not have him!

Patrick Bamford | 7.9m | TSB – 13%

FPL Gameweek 5 Analysis - Players To ~ Hold ~ Patrick Bamford

In a week where we have two of the most in-form striker unavailable, it’s a big surprise to see Bamford being sold by more than 90k managers

Bamford has accumulated 16 points so far with 1 goal and assist. Below are attacking stats for him in the first 4 matches, where he played MUN (A), EVE (H), BUR (A), and LIV (H).

The upcoming fixtures for Leeds are much better than what they have faced so far and are ideal for Bamford, who loves bottom-half oppositions. It’s not past him to pick up from where DCL left!

Michail Antonio | 7.9m | TSB – 40%

FPL Gameweek 5 Analysis - Players To ~ Hold ~ Michail Antonio

Once owned by more than 50% of managers, his ownership has now slid down to 40% owing to more than 1 million transfer outs!

I don’t need stats to tell you his FPL pedigree this season. His sell-out can only be attributed to his one-match suspension in GW5 against Manchester United and not the declining numbers.

But is it really necessary to sell him?

Let’s take a step back and see how his next 4 games after GW5 look like:

Three of his four opponents after GW5 accumulated an xCS of ~1 or less in four matches. Would you not want to wait and see Antonio vs Leeds who, by the way, may have issues at the CB position?

Sergio ReguilĂłn | 5.2m | TSB – 12%

FPL Gameweek 5 Analysis - Players To ~ Sell ~ Sergio Reguilon

I made a brief case last week about Spurs’ (and Reguilón’s) clean sheet numbers not being stable and it came to full swing in GW4 against Palace.

If you are thinking right now “but it happened after the Red card”, here is the half-time xG stat – Palace 1.3 – 0 Spurs (Tanganga Red Card – 58′). Spurs ended the GW4 fixture with a final xGC of 2.4 and xCS of just 0.1

Though it’s a fair assessment that going to 10 men amplified their issues and the defensive numbers against Palace might not be reliable. So let’s rewind and look back at GW1 to GW3. Below are Spurs’ xCS and xGC numbers in that period

Except for Watford, their xCS was close to 0, and even against Watford it barely round-ups to one. Spurs were lucky to keep clean sheets in all these matches which was the only contributor to Reguilón’s points total. His goal threat and creativity were also negligible in that period.

More than 100k managers have already transferred him out before GW5 and while his fixtures are good between GW6-GW8, it’s a risk to keep him before Spurs start to show some defensive resilience.

Lucas Digne | 5.4m | TSB – 12%

FPL Gameweek 5 Analysis - Players To ~ Sell ~ Lucas Digne

Another asset on the same boat with Reguilón whose underlying numbers are not impressive. The only difference being, Digne’s (and Everton’s) actual CSs correlate with their expected stats

As for attacking stats, Digne has posted much better underlying numbers but did not create any big chance for his teammates.

At the time of writing, more than 90k managers have transferred him out before GW5 and while the fixtures are not bad for Digne, it would be best to move on from him if you can.
