FPL GW4 Wildcard Draft, Strategy, tips and combinations

FPL GW4 Wildcard Strategy:

Get Ronaldo without destroying your defense. An effective strategy that maintains strength (and somewhat; depth) all over the pitch. We are probably going to be looking at near 50% ownership for CR7 in GW4, so with that being said; the word ‘essential’ springs to mind. Gamble: Which Premium asset(s) do we lose?

FPL GW4 Goalkeepers

Robert Sanchez remains the best £4.5m priced goalkeeper in my opinion, and with 1 clean sheet so far, I expect him to collect some more with his fixtures. I do intend for him to be my set-and-forget keeper this season, so Steele at £4.0m will do to make the numbers up.

Alternate Goalkeeping options to consider

If you are willing to pay a little more for a goalkeeper, Jose Sa of Wolves is someone who would interest me. No clean sheets yet for the Portuguese man, but he is yet to concede more than once versus Spurs, Leicester, and Man Utd. With a favourable run of fixtures that run all the way to December, I expect the £5.0m man to collect a good amount of clean sheets.

FPL GW4 Defenders

Many wildcards I have seen so far have tried to squeeze in as many premium attackers/midfielders as they can, disregarding any premium defenders that stops them in their tracks. However; a decimated defence full of sub £5.0m options will undoubtedly lull you into a false sense of security. At the time of writing, Trent Alexander-Arnold (one of the highest-scoring assets in each of the previous three seasons) has more than 125,000 transfers out so far, with the Liverpool man clearly top of the discard pile in order to fit in our new shiny toys (Lukaku/Ronaldo). It is worth remembering, for a forward to break the 200 point mark, they need to contribute to around at least 25 goals.

For that reason, I am looking to hold on to Trent whilst others dispose of him, as he will be a lot more difficult to bring back in with such a huge amount of funds spent in other areas.

I think FPL GW4 wildcarders should prioritize bringing in both a Chelsea defender and a Man City defender alongside Trent. Statistically, Chelsea and Man City have enjoyed the best start to the season in terms of defensive performance, with Man City, rather alarmingly only conceding 2 shots on target in their first 3 gameweeks, the best in the league.

Man City have also conceded almost half the amount of shots as the next best-placed team; Wolves, which brings me onto my next point. Wolves have incredible value in their backline. So far, no clean sheets, but after facing Leicester, Spurs and Man Utd in their first 3 games, and to still have the second LEAST shots conceded in the league, it’s worth considering with their brilliant fixture run.

In regards to a Chelsea defender, Christensen at £5.0m, Rudiger/James at £5.5m and Azpilicueta at £6.0m offers great potential. The stats have been largely affected by playing a large period at Anfield with 10 men after James’ sending off, but outside that, they have matched Man City in defensive performance.

In regards to a City defender, John Stones at £5.3m is one that’s really taking my fancy. News has emerged that Aymeric Laporte suffered a potential injury on international duty this week, even though the injury has since then been downplayed by Enrique, I still feel Stones sitting in the shadows so far this season, his time may come in GW4. If you aren’t convinced yet by Stones then Spurs defence is a good option and Regulion(£5.2m) could be a good direct replacement for Stones(£5.3m)They do face Leicester, Chelsea and Liverpool in 3 of their next 4, but following that the fixtures turn. If you aren’t overly happy about the fact his minutes could be questionable, you couldn’t go wrong with Ruben Dias at £6.0m if you have the funds.

In regards to Wolves, Coady and Marcal are both options at just £4.5m, with Semedo and Saiss being the two £5.0m men that are also viable.

My 5th defender is Brandon Williams (£4.0m) of Norwich City. I don’t expect to have to play my 5th defender often, but I hope he can nail down a place in the Norwich team for reassurance purposes.

Another alternative that has been uncovered by the treacherous waters of the International break is none other than Mason Holgate (£4.5m) of Everton after news broke of Seamus Coleman’s unfortunate injury. Holgate has actually played twice this season already, occupying the centre half role, returning 1 clean sheet. The injury to Coleman strengthens Holgate’s position in the starting 11, as he is also able to play at right-back. With kind fixtures until GW12, you could do a lot worse than including this man on your Wildcard.

FPL GW4 Midfielders

FPL GW4 wildcard ~ Midfielders

Jota is pretty much nailed in my team barring any incredible recovery from Firmino, who will share his minutes. The rumour is that Firmino is out for at least a month, so with that being said, Jota in the number 9 role for Liverpool is a no-brainer.

Much of the same can be said for Mo Salah, who should not need explanation, but averaging 10 points per game so far means he is undroppable.

The remaining midfielders are more up in the air. I have currently selected Francisco Trincao (£5.9m) and Emile Smith-Rowe (£5.4m). Trincao can easily become Adama Traore (£6.0m) and Smith-Rowe can easily become Demarai Gray (£5.6m). Both Trincao and Adama stack up well against under midfielders priced £6.5m and under. Adama boasts the most shots, most shots on target and 2nd best xG for midfielders under £6.5m. Likewise with Trincao, who has the most shots on target and 2nd most shots inside the box. I am certain one of these men will provide their very little amount of owners with some points soon.

For the 5th midfielder, I have picked Nampalys Mendy (£4.4m) of Leicester as he allows me the most financial freedom elsewhere.

Before going further, Do vote in this week’s FPL GW4 allaboutfpl captaincy poll. The same will be available in the captaincy analysis and metrics blog written by@AK_FPL1. The metrics has been delivering consistently with a 100% record this year. Last week the metric predicted Antonio as the best captaincy candidate ahead of Salah, Son, and Kane and he scored a monster haul once again. Stay tuned for the GW4 Captaincy metric to see who tops it!

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) has returned and he is, although some won’t admit it, probably the reason you wildcarded in the first place. Guilty. With Newcastle at home in GW4 on the horizon, the stage is set for CR7 to mark his return with aplomb. He’s my captain purely as I don’t want to miss out on the fun of owning him.

A nice alternative to Ronaldo (if you are posses a gigantic couch that are willing to hide behind for the duration of Man Utd’s fixture) is Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m), who has great fixtures from GW7 onwards. He is also a very good captaincy option for GW4, with Villa set to be without Emi Martinez in goals due to his across-the-globe galavant.

Alongside Ronaldo is Michail Antonio (£7.9m) – the most in-form player in the game right now. He awarded his day 1 recruiters with 40 points in the first 3 weeks, and looks set to continue. His ownership stands at 50%, so it would be quite the gamble going without the ‘Jamaican Hammer’. I just made that name up, but I really hope that sticks.

Occupying my final slot upfront is Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m). DCL has scored in all three games so far this season, so it would be harsh to not include him in a wildcard. Everton have great fixtures still to come, and I back DCL to continue his fine form.
