With premium midfielders like Salah, Fernandes and De Bruyne taking up a huge chunk of the budget identifying the right mid-priced assets are very essential. They offer great value and can be set and forget options in some cases too. In this blog, I have tried to compare and analyze the best mid-priced FPL Midfielders (£7.0 – £9.5 Mil) for the upcoming 2020/21 FPL season.
Mid-priced FPL Midfielders(7.0- 9.5M):
The following players are arranged based on their price:
- Harvey Barnes ( £7m ) – Leicester City
Appearances – 25(3)
Mins Played – 1949
Positions Played – LW, AM
Fixtures –
Barnes is one of the most direct players in the Leicester side and offers a huge goal threat. He had 9 big chances last season and averaged 5.27 points per start. A bit inconsistent but with a lot of chances coming his way Barnes can finish with a higher points tally than last season. Between gameweeks 15-26 he scored 6 goals, provided 4 assists, and was averaging 6.33 points per start. He was on fire during that period but unfortunately, his campaign was cut short by a knee injury he suffered. Fit once again and taking part in pre-season Barnes could be a very explosive option. It is still to be seen how he fits in the 2 man striker system which Leicester was playing later with Vardy and Iheanacho up top.
2. Nicolas Pepe ( £7.5m ) – Arsenal
Appearances – 29(13)
Mins Played – 1612
Positions Played – RW, LW
Fixtures –
Pepe showed good performances in the second half of the season and went under the radar for the most part. He scored 9 goals, provided 2 assists, and averaged 6.92 points per start. His 91 points during that time (Gw20-38 ) ranked in the top 10 among mids. Playing on the right-hand side mostly he is a threat and can have a big season finally after arriving from Lille in 2019. He took some penalties last season and is 2nd in line for that behind Aubameyang.

3. Mason Greenwood ( £7.5m ) – Manchester United
Appearances – 31(10)
Mins Played – 1824
Positions Played – CF, RW
Fixtures –

4. Diogo Jota ( £7.5m ) – Liverpool
Appearances – 19(7)
Mins Played – 1113
Positions Played – CF, LW, RW
Fixtures –
5. Phil Foden ( £8 m ) – Manchester City
Appearances – 28(11)
Mins Played – 1613
Positions Played – LW, CM
Fixtures –
After having a solid season Phil Foden would look to build on it for sure. One of Guardiola’s favourite players Foden should see a further increase in minutes and would be an even better FPL asset. A very explosive option who is capable of double figure returns regularly. He averaged 6.82 points per start last season and had 7.2 touches in the opposition penalty box per 90. Playing on the left hand side of attack mostly Foden has a great eye for goal and has great assist potential too averaging 2.01 key passes per 90 last season. His 85% pass accuracy in the final third is the highest among players mentioned in this list.

6. Jack Grealish ( £8 m ) – Aston Villa
Appearances – 26(2)
Mins Played – 2184
Positions Played – LW
Fixtures –
3 easy games to start off the season with 2 of those being promoted sides Grealish can get off the a fast start once again. Being at the center of every attack Grealish has a 43% goal involvement and was top for total key passes and assists till GW24 when he got injured. He was 2nd in expected assists and 3rd for big chances created during that time. With 148 touches inside the opposition box he ranks 5th among all midfielders. If he stays at Villa FPL managers should get him from the start.

7. Kai Havertz ( £8.5 m ) – Chelsea
Appearances – 27(9)
Mins Played – 1521
Positions Played – CF, AM
Fixtures –
Coming to Chelsea from the Bundesliga Havertz had a slow start under Frank Lampard. He was utilized in various different positions and never looked settled. Since Tuchel came in Havertz had the highest xG and most big chances per start among midfielders. Between gameweeks 27-38 he was averaging 7.17 points, 1.33 big chances and 2.87 shots in the box per start. He had a 55% goal involvement in that period and was alwayas a threat when he played. If Chelsea fail to sign a striker this transfer window expect Havertz to lead the line once again. He is all set to have a big season and could be an out of position player this year. One to watch out for sure when Chelsea start their easy run of fixtures from GW7.

8. Riyad Mahrez ( £9 m ) – Manchester City
Appearances – 27(9)
Mins Played – 1954
Positions Played – RW
Fixtures –
A potential GW2 captaincy candidate already Mahrez is the most expensive player on this list. He averaged 6.13 points, 0.39 goals and 0.38 assists per start. Nailing that right wing spot last season Mahrez scored 5 goals and provided 7 assists from GW19-38. 128 passes into the opposition box( 2nd among players in this list after Grealish) last season Mahrez had great assist potential too. He might be the first choice penalty taker this season ahead of Kevin De Bruyne. His price tag of 9 million is a bit on the higher side considering the rotation risk he carries but being a very explosive option he could get in those big hauls often.

Statistical Comparison of mid-priced FPL Midfielders:
Summary of some basic stats for mid-priced FPL Midfielders(7.0-9.5):
Mahrez was the highest-scoring player and just managed to play little under 2000 minutes. If he gets more playing time he could justify his price tag but I feel other players in this list could offer massive value if they nail down a starting spot.
Comparing some KEY STATS for these mid-priced FPL midfielders:
Big Chances + Big Chances Created
Grealish is far ahead in the list of big chances created (14) with Mahrez at 8 and no one else above 5. His creativity is a huge factor in making him a great buy with all of his big chances created coming in the first 24 gameweeks.
Havertz had most of his big chances (12) towards the end of the season and could be one of the key players in that Chelsea attack. 10 out of those 12 big chances he got were from GW27-38 even though he only started 6 of those matches.
Shots in the box/90 + Key passes/90
Jack Grealish leads the way once again with 3.34 key passes per 90 with Riyad Mahrez behind him with 2.03. Grealish had a total of 81 key passes last season which ranked 3rd highest among midfielders
The players which interests me the most in this list is Phil Foden. No one else has more than 2 in each category( shots in the box/90 and key passes/90) He could be one of the best buys if he gets more consistent playing time.

Touches in Opposition Box/90
Jota (7.84), Foden(7.2) and Mahrez(7.09) are the top 3 players in the list and the only ones who have more than 7 touches in the opposition box/90. With great attacking threat these players could get plenty of attacking returns if they are clinical in front of goal.
Man City have scored the most amount of goals in the past 4 seasons scoring 80+ in all of them and 100+ in 2. Expect Foden and Mahrez to be in the points whenever they play.
Jota had 2.67 shots in the box per start and ranked 3rd highest among all players and 2nd among mids only behind Salah.
Conclusion for mid-priced FPL Midfielders(7.0-9.5) ahead of 2021/22 FPL Season:
My Ratings of these Mid Priced Midfielders based on their attacking potential, price, position played and rotation risk are as follows :

Nicolas Pepe – 3/5
Mason Greenwood – 3.5/5
Diogo Jota – 3/5
Phil Foden – 4/5
Jack Grealish 4/5
