FPL GW9 Stats Preview: Hot takes on Teams and Players to watch out and avoid based on numbers

The international break hasn't been kind to FPL managers
The international break hasn’t been kind to FPL managers

The international break is slowly coming to an end but sadly the break has given a lot of injuries and positive COVID cases as players have been traveling a lot and playing loads of games. Over the break, we had posted a series of stats post talking about players and teams to consider and avoid post the break. We have expanded the stats and added our choices to make it a GW9 Stat preview blog post.

FPL GW9 Stats Preview

Bruno Fernandes- The man in form!

Bruno Fernandes GW9 Preview
Bruno could be the perfect Salah replacement

Bruno Fernandes(10.6) has continued his form from last season with 53 points from 7 games averaging more than 7.5 points per game. They have completed a slightly difficult run of fixtures and head into West Brom(H), Southampton(A), West Ham(A) for the next three games.

He should definitely fancy at least a return against a WBA side who have conceded the most goals(17), most big chances conceded(20), worst xGC(15.55) in the league. With Salah ruled out for a couple of weeks, Bruno is the best direct replacement for Salah at the moment and giving him the armband isn’t a bad choice either.

Richarlison back from suspension- Impact player

Richarlison GW9 stats

If Bruno is someone who has a great impact on the game, Richarlison is someone who silently has an impact on Everton’s results. Everton were on top of the league with 4 successive wins when he was there and have succumbed to 3 defeats, 1 draw in 4 games without him. In fact, Everton have never won a PL game without Richarlison since he joined them in July 2018.

They have a mini-fixture swing off their own playing Fulham, Leeds, and Burnley in the next 3. But, From GW12 they run into a set of tough games playing Chelsea, Leicester, Arsenal, City in 4/5 games. It would be a fair move to hold on to Everton assets at the moment or even use them as a 3-week punt!

Spurs fixture swing- Time to let go off Kane/Son?

Spurs GW9 stats
Spurs numbers are drastically on the fall

Spurs attacking returns have fallen remarkably in FPL over the past few GWs. The main talking point in FPL this week is to whether hold on to at least one of the Spurs attackers who have heavy ownership- Kane(45.4%), Son(58.3%). They have struggled in the last 4 games playing against team with a lower block- Teams who live to sit back and defend.

Now, they are up against bigger teams who would want to have more of the ball and attack. This could open up chances for Kane/Son on the counter. Hold on to at least one of the Spurs assets due to their heavy ownership and the need to transfer out other players due to injuries.

Good Bye Jimenez!

Wolves attack
Time to wave goodbye to Jimenez

Jimenez and Ings looked to be set and forget players in FPL at the start of the season. But the consistency of budget forwards like Bamford, DCL, and Watkins means that it is time to move on from Jimenez in FPL. It is still notable that Jimenez has a 50% Goal involvement in Wolves goals.

But the worrying point is Wolves creativity which gives Jimenez(8.4) an xG of 2.74 from 8 games. Other cheaper forwards have comparatively better xG-Bamford(5.12), Adams(3.34), Watkins(4.66), Wilson(6.6), and offer a cheaper route to bring premium midfielders in your FPL team.

Vardy time?

Vardy
Vardy could enjoy a similar run of form from GW9 this season

Jamie Vardy is the best direct replacement for Kane with the amazing set of fixtures. They run into an injured hit Liverpool followed by Fulham, Sheffield, and Brighton in the next three games. He has 7 goals and an assist in the last 10 games vs Liverpool. Vardy has the most goals(8), best xG(7.32) in the league even ahead of Salah(6.48) and Kane(6.02).

There is no shortage of penalties this season and he should still be among the penalties despite the miss against Wolves. We should definitely have an eye on Leicester defenders as well from an FPL point of view with these good fixtures.

Random stats worth mentioning ahead of GW9

  1. Bamford has better xG(3.46) than West Brom(2.72), Burnley(2.87), Brighton(3.54) from GW5- GW8. Arsenal just edges out Bamford with an xG of 3.80.
  2. Jamie Vardy has registered an xG of 7.32 so far this season which is more than the xG accumulated by the likes of West Brom-4.93, Burnley-5.99.
  3. Since the start of the season, Grealish has created six big chances.
West Ham United and Man united have seven each. Fulham, Newcastle, Burnley, and Southampton have five each which is less than Super jack. West Brom fair the worst having created just two big chances in eight games.
  4. Thomas Soucek has had more big chances(3) compared to WBA (2) this season.
  5. Aubameyang has an NPxG of 0.04 since GW5 which is even less than that of Scott McTominay. He has also recorded an xG of just 0.8 during the period.
