FPL GW29 Differential picks to consider ahead of FPL GW29 Deadline

Gameweek 28 was rather an uninspiring week for FPL managers, as most, if not all of the big hitters failed to deliver barring the two city defenders. You would have of course had a week to remember if you brought in Kelechi Iheanacho, one of our differential picks in GW28. The Nigerian scored a hattrick and was also the top points scorer(17). If the last week was challenging, this one is going to be even more as only 4 fixtures are there and a lot of them hard to call on paper. That would mean, to break away from the rest around you in your private leagues you would have to nail your transfer, and this is where a differential could come in handy. Here is a look at all of our differential picks ahead of FPL GW29 deadline.

Note: The ownership and price given is at the time of writing, and is subject to change thereafter.

FPL GW29 Differential Picks:

Lewis Dunk vs Newcastle(H), £5.0, TSB: 8.7%

Dunk- FPL
Lewis Dunk has the potential to add on to his best goal scoring tally.

One of the most important facets of FPL is to spot defenders who are capable of producing an attacking return and spend that bit extra to bring them in. If the defender also happens to be from a team that is capable of keeping a load of clean sheets( statistically), it is the icing on the cake. Lewis Dunk falls into this category seamlessly.

Granted, Brighton’s excellent defensive numbers haven’t exactly translated into clean sheets on the field as often as it should. However, taking on a Newcastle side which has created just 6 big chances in last 6 matches(2nd worst after Palace) should boost the Seagulls’ chances of a shut out.

As for Lewis Dunk, he has scored four goals already this season, dare I say it should be five(you would understand if you had watched the WestBrom game). Steve Bruce’s side has conceded 7 goals from set plays already this season, so Dunk’s aerial threat could come in handy again.

Going into their FPL GW29 fixture, Newcastle have not won a single game against Brighton in the league. In fact, the Magpies have only scored 1 goal in 7 matches against the South-coast side. Surely this is the game where Brighton convert numbers into reality.

Leandro Trossard vs Newcastle(H), £5.7, TSB: 2.2%

Trossard FPL GW29
Trossard is the best attacking asset from Brighton

It is risky to put one Brighton player on a list of options to pick in FPL, let alone two. However, their FPL GW29 fixture is so good on paper that we couldn’t help but look at their assets.

Trossard has scored 3 goals and also assisted 5 times this season. One of those goals came last weekend at St. Mary’s in Brighton’s 2-1 win. The Belgian has 8 shots in the box, 7 of them on target, 2 big chances to go along with it, in last 6 matches. Only Harry Kane, Aubameyang and Lingard have had more shots on target in that time, among those players playing in this Gameweek.

Alternatively, from Brighton’s attack, Pascal Gross is also a potential option. He has better stats than Trossard, however, he is likely to be deployed as a RWB, which limits his potential this week.

Pro Tip: If you are on a Free hit in FPL GW29, then it is worth considering Brighton attackers, otherwise it is best to stay away from them.

Sergio Reguillon vs Aston Villa(A), £5.5, TSB: 3.9%

Reguillon FPL
Reguillon could shock the FPL community this week by being the scorer from the Spurs v Villa game

A lot of us would have thought of a Spurs triple up of Kane, Son and Bale going into FPL GW29. But, Son’s injury has opened up a window of opportunity for a different Spurs asset to complete the triplet. Sergio Reguillon is exactly the type of defender you would want to own in FPL.

The Spaniard has already registered 4 assists this season. He also gets himself into the box often and likes to get shots away. In fact, the Spurs full back has a 0.56 shots in the box per game started. None of the top full backs have a better tally. Here’s a look at a list of a selected few defenders for shots in the box per game started.

  • Reguillon- 0.56
  • Targett- 0.07
  • Cancelo-0.55
  • Robertson- 0.41
  • Dallas-0.39
  • Creswell-0.14

Reguillon scored 3 goals last season for Sevilla. If his efforts to arrive in the box is anything to go by, he is going to open his account in front of goal sooner rather than later. His opponent in FPL GW29, Aston Villa have scored just 3 goals in their last 6 matches. With Grealish potentially being out again, Spurs have a good chance of keeping a clean sheet against Dean Smith’s side.

Nicolas Pepe vs WestHam(A), £7.6, TSB: 1.3%

Pepe- FPL
Pepe can build on his recent away form against the Hammers

A major headache for FPL managers is to deal with rotation from teams that are involved in Europe. Mikel Arteta in particular has chopped and changed his attackers since the restart of Europa league, which makes it hard to pick one player from the Gunners. However, in the potential absence of Saka due to injury, Nicolas Pepe is only natural right winger in the Arsenal set-up.

Pepe has scored in 3 of his last 4 away matches. He arguably produced his best display in Arsenal colors in this corresponding fixture last season, where he scored one goal and set up another in a 3-1 win for the North-London side.

Since GW20, no Arsenal player has had more shots(16) in the box than Pepe. This is despite the fact that he has started only half of the games. It could be another profitable game for the Ivorian.

Alexandre Lacazette vs WestHam(A), £8.1, TSB: 5.7%

Lacazette- FPL
Lacazette could be thorn in WestHam’s foot yet again

Among all the fixtures in FPL GW29, WestHam vs Arsenal offers the greatest potential for goals. As a result of which, a second attacker from this game makes it to our list, in Alexandre Lacazette. The Frenchman is the top scorer for Mikel Arteta’s men in the league this season, with 10 goals.

In all, the Arsenal striker has had 12 attacking returns( 10 g 2 a) this season, 9 of those( 7 g 2a) have come away from home. Since GW15 when Lacazette started getting picked again in the eleven, no player in the entire league, not even Gundogan, has had more big chances(11) than the Arsenal forward.

Stat Attack:

  • Lacazette has scored 4 goals in his last 5 matches against WestHam. Against no other team has he scored more goals(4) than against the Hammers.
  • The Frenchman has scored in 6 of his last 8 London derby matches.

Ultra-Differential Pick for FPL GW29(<1% TSB):

Tosin Adarabioyo vs Leeds(H), £4.5, TSB: 0.8%

Tosin-FPL
Leeds’ weakness from set plays combined with Tosin knocking on the goal scoring door is the perfect recipe

Believe it or not, since GW12, only Chelsea(14) and Manchester City(10) have conceded fewer goals than Fulham(15). In that time the West London side have kept 8 clean sheets. Only Manchester City(12), Aston Villa(10), Chelsea(10) and Manchester United(10) have kept more. Fulham are definitely living in elite company, defensively anyways.

Going into this week, a lot of managers are relying heavily on the Leeds assets to deliver. But Fulham’s defensive numbers coupled with the fact that Bielsa’s men have failed to score in 4 of their last 5 matches suggests that the chances of the Cottagers shutting out their opponent is higher than what it looks on paper.

None of the defensive options from Fulham are inspiring in terms of a possible attacking return. Having said that, looking at the aforementioned stats, a defender from Fulham, not only is a good option for FPL GW29, he can also be a season keeper.

As to who is the best option from Fulham, Tosin seems like the best bet. He has got more bonus points(11) than any of his teammates. He also tops the BPS charts. The former Manchester City man has had 3 big chances this season.

Most notably, only 4 other defenders, namely, Maguire(28), Dunk(21), Vestegaard(17) and Mings(17) have had more shots in the box than Tosin(16). We also know that Leeds love conceding goals from set plays. Maybe, FPL GW29 could be the time in which Tosin finds the back of the net, which admittedly, has been a long time coming.
