FPL GW34 Tips - Free Hit Strategy, Midfielders to Target & More

Welcome to Insanely Football’s Dilemmas blog for Gameweek 34 of the FPL 2023/24 season. This blog will break down all the popular Dilemmas FPL managers have this week and offer FPL GW34 tips that will help you address the key dilemmas and maximize your FPL points.

FPL GW34 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

1) How do you get the most out of the ‘Free Hit’ chip in FPL GW34?

Managers who haven’t played their Free Hit yet have a great chance to play it this week. GW34 is a double Gameweek, and these teams are doubling this week.

✅ Arsenal vs Wolves(A), Chelsea(H)
✅ Bournemouth vs Villa(A), Wolves(A)
✅ Palace vs West Ham(H), Newcastle(H)
✅ Liverpool vs Fulham(A), Everton(A)
✅ Everton vs Forest(H), Liverpool(H)
✅ Sheffield United vs Burnley(H), Man United(A)
✅ Wolves vs Arsenal(H), Bournemouth(H)

You can easily set up a team with 11 Doublers and maximize GW34. A double-up on the Arsenal defence + Saka is a safe combination. If you want to go aggressive, you can go for Havertz + Saka and one of the defenders.

Picking Liverpool players is tricky. Assuming Salah is a lock, the other two spots are up for grabs. Trent will likely fill in for Bradley, but getting him will not be easy. VVD is a decent option instead, as it is cheaper and provides some decent threat from set-pieces.

You can even punt on Darwin and one of the other Liverpool attackers. Luiz Diaz has started every game since GW19 and is a safe starter. He has 9 attacking returns at the same time and can be considered bringing in this week/next week. Alexis MacAllister is another differential if you are looking to gain rank/positions in your mini-league. Diogo Jota has a greater goal threat than both Diaz and MacAllister, but he may not start both games.

Crystal Palace has trickier games this week, but if you want to target their options, getting their keeper, Dean Henderson, could still be okay. Yes, the clean sheet potential isn’t very high, but both Newcastle and West Ham take a lot of shots, which could result in some decent save points. Daniel Muñoz (More on him in our differentials blog)would be my pick if you are targeting their defenders. He is better than Mitchell going forward and is cheaper than the safer Joachim Andersen pick.

In midfield, I would look at Eberechi Eze(More on him in our differentials blog). He costs around £6m and can potentially go big this week. Eze has started every game since GW27 and is likely to start both games for Palace this week. Olise is another player likely to get more minutes, but he may provide a more creative threat than direct goal-scoring and is also coming back from an injury. I prefer Eze here. Suppose you are looking to replace Haaland or any other forward. In that case, you can even look at the forward Jean-Philippe Mateta on a Free Hit. He is going to be a slight differential option. He can do well against the unpredictable defences of West Ham and Newcastle.

Wolves are another team to target in the double this week. If Rayan Aït-Nouri is fit, he is still a decent pick. Though I am a bit concerned about the clean sheet potential, Aït-Nouri can still provide us with attacking returns. Wolves are facing Arsenal (the league’s best defence), which isn’t optimal for a Wolves attacker. I am okay not going with any Wolves striker, but if I had to choose, I’d look at Matheus Cunha as a third-forward option.

Update: Article was written before the Wolves Press Conference and here are the latest updates with Cunha ruled out.

Bournemouth has an okay double, but I’d still avoid their defenders. Their clean-sheet potential isn’t very high, and there isn’t any upside to going with their defenders. The only player I’d consider from Bournemouth is their striker Dominic Solanke. The forward has been in fine form this season, scoring 17 goals, and can easily add to his tally this week.

Everton and Sheffield United aren’t on my target list. There are better teams and players to target and gain an advantage over here!

2) What should we do with players who have a single game in FPL GW34?

Players from Aston Villa, Chelsea, Man City and Newcastle are giving us quite the dilemma this week. All these teams are only playing once this week. The logic would say to transfer out at least a few players from these teams or take them out entirely on a Free Hit. But it’s not really that simple!

Ollie Watkins has scored three goals in his last two games and can do well again this week against a leaky Bournemouth defence. Removing him is still a big risk, but if you want to go aggressive, you can take him out for players like Solanke, Nunez, Mateta, etc.

I would not remove Palmer on a ‘Free Transfer’. Chelsea will double next week, and it doesn’t make sense to remove and get him back again next week. It’s okay to bench him in GW34 as he plays Arsenal, a team that has done well defensively this season. On a Free Hit, taking him out and going for a different MID is much simpler. I would also use a similar approach for Gusto. He will likely feature next week, and it makes sense to bench him in GW34.

Man City is tricky. After losing to Real Madrid in the Champions League QF, the team wants to bounce back, and Brighton, despite being a good team, maybe on the receiving end of the same. I expect Foden to start against Brighton and can do well this week. If Haaland is fit, I would put him ahead of players like Mateta and Cunha. I am okay holding him this week without a Free Hit.

Newcastle is another team with decent players, including Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak. Like Haaland, I am also okay with holding Isak for this week. Isak has been in great form and has scored seven times in the last six games. There are many good options in midfield, and Gordon can be replaced on a ‘Free Transfer’ and a ‘Free Hit’ as well.

3) Which midfielders do I need to prioritize right now?

Arsenal and Liverpool MIDs are priorities this week. Both teams have a double gameweek, and there are many options to choose from. Mohamed Salah and Bukayo Saka are already popular options this week. I don’t see any point in going against both picks. That leaves us with three remaining spots.

The other options depend on whether you are going for double defences from Arsenal or Liverpool. If you are doubling on the Arsenal defence, you can go for a 2nd Liverpool attacker. Luiz Diaz is my preferred option. Diogo Jota is the riskier and has a higher upside pick. In the other case, if you are going for a double Liverpool defence, you can get Kai Havertz in midfield from Arsenal.

Eberechi Eze is my other pick from a midfield five (if you are going with five midfielders). He has been playing well for Palace and is an important goal-scorer. He plays more directly than players like Olise, who has a higher creative threat, and that’s why I prefer him to the Palace team.

Suppose you only get a defender from each Arsenal and Liverpool team. In that case, you can get a midfield of two Arsenal + two Liverpool, along with Eze, to complete a midfield five and play a 3-5-2.
