Haaland’s record price came as a bit of a surprise for FPL managers who were expecting a price between 13-14 Million for the 24/25 season. Haaland scored 217 pts in the 23/24 season after being priced at 14.0 Million for the 23/24 season which was a decrease from the whopping 272 pts he scored in his first PL season(22/23 season), Although his decreased output in the 23/24 season was majorly due to him missing a few games due to injuries.

Haaland reached a peak price of 14.5 Million during the 23/24 season, and Thiery Henry in the 05/06 season reached a peak price of 14.9 Million.

Thiery Henry- £14.0 million(2005/06, 2006/07)

FPL started in the 2002/03 season and Thiery Henry was the Highest Scoring FPL Forward for four consecutive seasons- 271, 242, 231, and 239 points. There was simply no competition for him. Henry started at the 14 million price tag for 2 consecutive seasons- 2005/06, 2006/07. In the 2005/06 season, Henry finished with 230 points while the 2006/07 season proved to be a disaster with just 102 points before his eventual transfer to Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo started the 2008/09 season at £14.0 million, thanks to his heroics in the 2007/08 season in which he amassed 31 goals, and 6 assists to get 283 FPL Points which was the Highest point tally at that time. Ronaldo was the man to beat Henry’s 271 points record from 2002/03. Ronaldo was also a midfielder back in those FPL days which meant he got 5 points for a goal.

Ronaldo however finished the season with only 206 points(18 goals, and 7 assists), a big drop from the previous season. This was also his last season before he left for Real Madrid!

Fun Fact: As seen in the screenshot, Ashley Young was a Forward in FPL back in those days. In fact, he was the only player(as per our research) to feature as a Defender, Midfielder, or Forward in FPL History.

Van Persie £14.0 Million, 2013/14

As we know, both these seasons came at Different clubs- Arsenal and then Manchester United. Van Persie registered 84 goal contributions(56G+ 28 assists) from 78 games averaging 6.98 points/ game across those two seasons.

However, RVP was not able to live up to his price tag and reputation for the third consecutive season as he ended up the season with just 112 points.

Van Perise’s poor form coincided with Suarez’s stunning form(from FantasyYirma.com)

Forwards have always taken the maximum price points in FPL over the years as the Top spot is shared by Henry, RVP, and Ronaldo- All at 14.0 million. Aguero was the next costliest FPL Forward- Being priced at £13.0 million in the 2015/16, 2016/17 seasons. He did end up with 184 and 175 points on these seasons which didn’t justify his price tag.

Most Expensive Defenders in FPL History:

Defenders is the most difficult one to guess. The first name that comes to our mind is Trent Alexander Arnold. Surprisingly, he does not even feature in the Top 5 Costliest Defenders list. TAA has only started at 7.5 million in the last 3 seasons, but there were defenders who started the season at 8.5 and 8.0 million. Let’s take a look at the Most Expensive Defenders(at the start of the season) since FPL began in 2002/03.

Terry ended the season at 196 points, conceding just 13 goals conceded keeping 24 clean sheets in the process. That 196 points was the Highest score by an FPL defender for 14 consecutive years. The record was finally broken by Robertson in the 2018/19 season when he amassed 213 points.

John Arne Riise-£8.5 million(2003/04)

Not the Liverpool defender you were expecting for, But John Arne Riise is the man. He was an attacking full-back who took up good attacking positions and also delivered good set pieces. Riise had 21 goals, and 30 assists during his time at Liverpool.

Riise also had a mega haul in that season- Getting 27 points in a Single Gameweek. He got 2 goals, 2 assists, a clean sheet, and 3 bonus points against West Brom. This remains the Most Points scored by a Defender in a Single Gameweek to date.

There were plenty of defenders who started the season at the 8.0 million bracket over the years.
