It was business as usual in FPL GW13 with Haaland hauling in style, however, a few managers who went with Salah as their captain were disappointed as Liverpool lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest a week after winning against defending champion Man City. This week captaincy is exciting with a lot of good fixtures to target for captaincy, there is also a potential injury concern for Haaland, although Pep did not confirm if he’s fully fit or not in Friday’s press conference. In this blog, let’s analyze the top FPL Gameweek 14 Captain Picks and see who tops the metrics.
Update: Haaland is included in the captaincy metrics as Pep did not give a clear update on his availability.
The metrics had a 30/38 “returns record” last season and so far has a 10/12 “returns record” this season. Do follow the man behind the metrics @AK_FPL1(Do follow him on Twitter)
Note: “Returns” ~ player topping the metrics getting points returns and not necessarily the highest scoring option of the week. Metrics total points so far: 238 points(24+10+12+34+34+18+12+46+12+4+6+26)

FPL GW14 Captaincy poll ~ Wisdom Of the Crowd
Haaland tops the votes as expected after his 13-point haul against Brighton, he’s a slight injury doubt against Leicester. Salah inspite of two consecutive blanks is second with 14.5% of the votes, Salah has a great record against Leeds who have been struggling a bit and might have injury concerns going into the game against Liverpool at Anfield. Mr. Consistent Kane who has blanked only twice this season is third on the poll up against Bournemouth who infact have a decent home record. Arsenal trio of Jesus, Martinelli, and Saka are 4th, 5th, and 6th in the captaincy poll this week and they play Forest at home.

Underlying Numbers of the FPL Gameweek 14 Captain picks
For the first time, this season Haaland doesn’t have a huge difference with the 2nd best player based on individual numbers. Kane is nearly matching Haaland with a xG of 4.18 just 0.2 short of Haaland’s tally of 4.38 in the last six games, both of them have the same number of big chances as well.
Jesus is third best with an xG of 3.0 from 16 shots inside the box and 7 big chances. Salah is only fourth best behind Haaland, Kane and Jesus with an xG of 2.45. Martinelli is the last amongst all players for individual stats.

Fixture Difficulty of the candidate team in FPL GW14
This section of the metrics is where things get interesting. Liverpool and Salah edge out Haaland, Arsenal assets, and Kane in terms of fixture difficulty. Liverpool have a whopping 92% chance of scoring at least one goal and a 56% chance of scoring 2+ goals. The margin is soo close that Arsenal is below Liverpool by just 1% in terms of scoring at least one goal and scoring 2+ goals. Man City are third and meanwhile, Spurs are last even though their odds(80% of scoring at least one goal and 29% of scoring 2+ goals) are good it’s not close to the other three teams.

Projections Rank of our FPL Gameweek 14 Captain Picks
There is a three-way split in the projections with the trio of Haaland, Kane and Salah all tied on top. There isn’t a big difference between first place and last place with even Martinelli who’s fifth on the projection table having great projections for FPL GW14 which indicates it to be a high-scoring gameweek. Only 15% in terms of anytime returns and 1.2 points in terms of points projection is the difference between the 1st and last place this week.

Conclusion – Final Rank from our FPL Gameweek 14 Captaincy metric analysis
Haaland once again tops the metrics although this time only with a CRF(Cumulative rank difference) of just one as Salah is second with a CRF of 8. Jesus is 3rd with a CRF of 12, and Kane is close to Jesus in fourth place with a CRF of 13. Martinelli is last in the metrics this week with the main reason being his individual numbers not being very good compared to the others.
PS: We have included Haaland as there is no clear-cut update on his injury concern, if he’s out then Salah who is second becomes the best captaincy choice according to our metrics.
