FPL GW29 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

1) What to do if not Free Hitting in GW29?

Free Hit in GW29 will be very popular, considering how FPL managers have handled their transfers in the last few weeks. There is also an alternate strategy to not using the Free Hit chip this week. If you already have 7-8 players for GW29 and can even reach 10 players with a hit(-4), you can avoid using the Free Hit this week.

The priority here would be to target Tottenham players (Son, Maddison, Porro/Udogie) They have really good potential this week, and their ownership will be comparatively higher than the rest.

The other possible option to use the Free Hit is in GW34, when a few teams like Crystal Palace, Man United, Newcastle, and Sheffield United may double. Another option is to play the chip in GW37, which is likely to be the biggest double gameweek of the season. This can be a great strategy if you have used the ‘Bench Boost’ chip before.

While there may be a temptation to take multiple (-8,-12,-16, etc), I don’t think it’s worth it! If you are falling short of your ideal players by a lot, just play the Free Hit this week. You can plan your transfers to get the most out of the Doubles in GW34 & 37.

2) Who are the best players to target on a Free Hit?

We have a Blank Gameweek in GW29. Only 4 fixtures are going ahead this week. The fixtures are as follows:

✅ Burnley vs Brentford
✅ Luton vs Nott’m Forest
✅ Fulham vs Spurs
✅ West Ham vs Aston Villa

As you can see from the games above, there is only 1 standout fixture, i.e. Fulham vs Tottenham. It makes sense to go for triple Tottenham and max out here. Pedro Porro should start the game against Fulham and look like the standout option in the Tottenham defence. The other two picks are James Maddison and Son Heung-min. Both are priorities and are most likely to return in the Spurs attack this week.

If you’re looking for a very differential attacker then you can even go for Brennan Johnson (Our ultra differential pick in the differentials blog this week)

Ollie Watkins was pretty much a locked player, but he has an injury concern. Unai Emery said Watkins only suffered a cut and could be available for Sunday. I still believe he is my first striker option. You can even get Douglas Luiz/Bailey in midfield. I am unsure about the Villa defence and would look elsewhere for options.

Burnley is relatively leaky, and Ivan Toney can have a massive haul. He is a great option this week. Sergio Reguilón, if declared fit, can be a great defender option from Brentford. There is potential for a clean sheet and attacking returns here.

Coming to the Luton-Forest game, Alfie Doughty is a decent defender option this week. Luton may not keep a clean sheet, but Doughty can provide attacking returns.

For the same reason, even a Forest attacker is not the worst call. Elanga and Morgan Gibbs-White have done well in the Forest attack, and both are good differentials to target this week. For Luton’s attack, we can get Carlton Morris as the third forward option.

3) How do you differentiate your GW29 Free Hit team?

While players like Doughty, Porro, Maddison, Bowen, Son, and Watkins will be popular picks on Free Hit, you can still differentiate yourself from the crowd.

Goalkeepers are one area where you can differentiate this week. Mark Flekken is a decent option. He is still maybe a bit popular, and you can go for Matz Sels/Martinez from Aston Villa and put yourself in a position to get lucky.

In defenders, if Reguilón is not fit or you are just looking to go in a different direction, Nathan Collins is a decent pick. He can be a threat from set-pieces, and there is potential for a clean sheet against an average Burnley attack.

Coming to midfielders, Ross Barkley is still only owned by less than 4% of managers and can play well against Forest. Anthony Elanga, Mo Kudus, and Lucas Paqueta are decent alternatives in midfield. All three are quite attack-minded and can provide decent hauls this week.

With most managers choosing Watkins, Toney, and Morris as their front three, it will be risky to go aggressive. But you can get Rodrigo Muniz from Fulham. We know Tottenham’s defence can be leaky, and Muniz has scored five goals in his last six games.

Wissa is another great differential striker shout if you’re not keen on getting Toney. Wood who faces Luton is another decent option having made his first start in GW28 returning from an injury.
