FPL GW25 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

1) Is it okay to play the Free Hit ahead of FPL GW25?

Is it okay to play the Free Hit ahead of FPL GW25?

Managers have a small window of opportunity, especially those who do not have Man City players and have players from teams blanking in GW26 instead, i.e. Liverpool, Luton, Chelsea and Tottenham.

A Free Hit in GW25 also makes sense if you don’t want to have Liverpool players for GW26 who blank that week. You can have them on a GW25 Free Hit and continue with the team you had for GW24.(without the Liverpool picks)

On the other hand, using the Free Hit this week would make you compete against a Triple Captain Haaland situation, which will be a popular strategy this week. That means if Haaland goes big this week, you will lose points even if you own and captain him.

Plus, there are other windows where you can use your Free Hit. GW29 is a huge blank gameweek where only 6 teams are confirmed to have a game right now. Your team might need a Free Hit to bail you even if you think the upside and points potential is not very high.

Other gameweeks to use the Free Hit are GW34 and GW37. The latter, in particular, is likely to be a huge Double Gameweek, and saving the chip for then may be ideal.

Ultimately, you have to see your team and take a call accordingly. If you feel your team cannot be sorted out for 2-3 transfers this week and using the chip makes more sense, go ahead. Otherwise, save it for later and assess it in those specific week windows.

2) How do you plan for the upcoming Doubles and Blank Gameweeks?

The current confirmed Double and Blank Gameweek fixtures are as follows:

Double Gameweek 25
✅ MCI vs CHE (H), BRE (H)
✅ BRE vs LIV (H), MCI (A)
✅ LIV vs BRE (A), LUT (H)
✅ LUT vs MUN (H), LIV (A)

Blank Gameweek 26
❌ CHE vs TOT
❌ LIV vs LUT

Fixtures going ahead in GW29
✅ FUL vs TOT
✅ BUR vs BRE
✅ WHU vs AVL

I understand the temptation to bring in as many double gameweek players as possible, but do think about your GW26 team. This is because Liverpool and Luton players who double in GW25 blank next week. Also, you might have players from Tottenham and Chelsea who also blank in GW26.

As I mentioned in my last blog, a good strategy is to focus more on getting the Man City triple up. They double in GW25 and don’t blank in GW26. They probably won’t have a game in GW29, but you can deal with it later. (in and around GW29)

Liverpool is next on the priority list, and I aim to get to 2 Liverpool players for their double this week. The blank in GW26, and unless you plan to Free Hit in GW26, you can keep it to 2 Liverpool players in your team.

Then come your picks from Luton, a decent-form team with Doubles in GW25 and 28 but is blanking in GW26. And only go super heavy with Luton picks if you are Free Hitting in GW26.

Brentford is another team that is worth looking at for now. They double in GW25 and don’t blank in GW26 and 29. The double in GW25 is against Liverpool and Man City, so the potential is slightly less, but it may still be worth it.

3) Which Double Gameweek teams/players should be targeted this week?

Which Double Gameweek teams/players should be targeted this week?

My priority would be to get in Man City players first. They have a double this week and don’t blank in GW26. Man City is a team in form and playing well. A triple-up on Man City is the best way to get the most out of their strong expected performance. Erling Haaland and Phil Foden are must-haves at the moment. I also like KDB more than Ederson/Ake, as there is more potential for points. I recommend a triple City attack unless your team structure doesn’t allow it.

You can get Nathan Ake in your team if you are looking for a defensive pick. He is only £5m in the game right now and has started the last 8 games in the Premier League for Man City.

Julián Álvarez is a don’t buy/don’t sell for me. He will likely get a start in at least one of the games in GW25. If I had him, I’d keep him. I’d only sell him if the plan is to get Haaland instead.

Next is Liverpool, and Jota and Darwin look like the picks to have in attack. There is no sure-shot confirmation of a Salah start at the time of writing this article. He could still be a great differential pick, as many managers may find it very hard to bring back Salah. (because of funds spread across the team). It might be a great move if you already have or can get him easily, especially if Salah starts both games.

Trent Alexander Arnold was another great pick to have. Still, with the news of his injury, he is in doubt and no longer under consideration. You can get Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m), who is a sure-shot starter in the Liverpool team but doesn’t have much attacking/goal threat. Also, Liverpool isn’t very tight at the back, and there is not a lot of merit in going with van Dijk.

The other option is going for Conor Bradley (£4.1m), who is likely to replace Trent on the right side of the Liverpool defence. One issue with him is that we don’t know if he will start one/both games. Joe Gomez is fit and can easily play ahead of Bradley if I had to choose one. I’d still go, Bradley.

Coming to other Double Gameweek teams, Brentford and Luton are also doubling in GW25. Both have a tricky double in GW25, facing Liverpool and Man City that week. You can still have Ivan Toney from the Brentford attack. He is a nailed attacker who will be Brentford’s talisman and can score against even tougher opposition. Ivan Toney is an excellent pick if you are looking for a differential forward.

If you want to make upgrades across the pitch, having a Luton defender may not be the worst decision this season. Luton also doubles in GW28, but do make a note of their blank in GW26. Alfie Doughty is the pick in defence, but he is £4.6m right now. You can go to Amari’i Bell. If you are looking for a cheap enabler, you can bench later.

4) What should we do with Trent Alexander-Arnold?

What should we do with Trent Alexander-Arnold?

Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the Carabao Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea. This occurs after DGW25, meaning he will likely miss both games of the double in GW25. He is definitely a sell for me with a blank gameweek in GW26, MCI (A) in GW27, and a likely blank in GW29.

Now, who do we buy to replace him? That is the biggest concern for FPL managers right now.

As mentioned earlier, you can go for Virgil van Dijk. The double in GW25 has clean sheet potential, and we know Van Dijk is nailed. Downgrading Trent to Van Dijk can help many managers get to KDB/Salah or even a good third forward like Toney.

If you find Van Dijk not worth the money or can’t afford him, you can get Conor Bradley instead. He is expected to be back in the squad for the first game of DGW25; Bradley has a good chance of a start in Trent’s absence. He comes in at only £4.1m and will likely help you get Salah/KDB. The only issue with him is that we don’t know if he starts both games. He also blanks in GW26 and you will have to bench next week.

If buying any of the Liverpool defenders will leave you a man short in GW26, then you consider a Man City defender. Kyle Walker was a popular choice a few weeks ago, but he has started only 1 of the last 3 PL games for City. I’d instead go for Nathan Ake. Right now, he looks like the most nailed pick in the City backline, apart from Ederson.

Gvardiol is out for 2-3 weeks, so Ake probably becomes a bit more safe. Still, we must always account for surprises regarding Pep and his lineups. I would still get Ake over any other City defender and Ederson.

You can even go for Luton’s Alfie Doughty as your Trent replacement. They double this week, and if you can afford to bench him in GW26, he is a great pick. I understand that clean sheets are a bit much to expect from Luton, but Doughty can be a great attacking defender option.

Another possible replacement is Brentford’s Sergio Reguilón. He is also cheap and costs £4.4 million right now. The double in GW25 is tough, and I am not expecting any clean sheets from both, but Reguilón is on corners and can always get an attacking return. He can be a great pick if you are not planning to use your Free Hit in GW29.

5) Is it worth bringing in Mohamed Salah this week?

Mohamed Salah is back in full training for Liverpool!

Now, the question is should we get straight in?

The short answer: it’s not that simple!

Mohamed Salah is £13.0m in the game right now, and many FPL managers like me cannot afford him. I have KDB in my team, and even if I want to get Salah in, I can’t. If I had to get him in, I would have to make significant downgrades elsewhere and perform a major team surgery.

I don’t think it’s worth the risk. There is a chance that Salah may not start both games in GW25. Plus there is also the EFL Cup final post GW25 to keep in mind is also coming soon. He may need to leave our teams in GW26 anyway, as Liverpool is blanking that week, and for a week, I don’t think all this chaos is worth it.

He is only 18% owned right now, and if you don’t own him, you won’t lose out on much. Having a rough plan in mind post-GW26 to get Salah back is okay. But for the Double in GW25, he is not essential.

That will be all from my side for this week! I wish you all the best for FPL Gameweek 25, and I will see you all next week.
