FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold & Sell

When it rains, it pours. While the gap between GW21 and GW22 deadline was 18 days, the gap between the last match of GW22 and the deadline of GW23 is a little over 18 hours. Too many things are back – EPL, Man Utd injury time winners and a certain Nordik God.

So, let’s start with our BUY-HOLD-SELL article for this GW, sponsored by …. Well, nobody. We are poor, but you can help here if you want 😊

FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY

Erling Haaland (£14.1m) – FWD, Man City – 60.1% TSB

Haaland made his first appearance in EPL after GW15. But he has already seen his price increase twice even though he has played 19 mins. He looked rusty in that time but racked up a respectable xGI of 0.24

Till he got injured (GW1-GW15), Haaland was

  • 1st for Shots
  • 1st for Shots on Target
  • 1st for Shots in the Box
  • 1st for Big Chances
  • 1st for Goals Scored
  • 1st for Goal Involvements
  • xG
  • xGI
  • xGNP
  • xG Open Play

Man City are ranked 1st in terms of FDR till GW26. They have a DGW 25 but doesn’t blank in GW26.

Buy Haaland.

PS – I am not 100% convinced about captaining him this week owing to his rustiness. Also his mins are at risk, as we saw with KDB in the first two matches post comeback. Pep loves to ease his players into the action.

Dominic Solanke (£7.1m) – FWD, Bournemouth – 27.2% TSB

Bournemouth has a dream run of fixtures till GW32 (although they might blank in GW29)

They face Nottingham Forest in GW23.

GW12 onwards, NFO has not kept a Clean Sheet conceding the most goals in the league in that period.

During that same time, Solanke ranks (among FWDs)

  • 1st for FPL points
  • 1st for Goals
  • 1st for Goal Involvements
  • 1st for Shots in the Box
  • 1st for BPS
  • 1st for xG
  • 1st for xGNP
  • 1st for xG Open Play
  • 2nd for xGI
  • 2nd for Bonus Points
  • 2nd for Shots
  • 2nd for Big Chances

Not to mention, Bournemouth will have DGW sometime as their match against Luton is yet to be rescheduled. So buy Solanke to gain the lead in your mini leagues.

FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD

Anthony Gordon (£6.2m) – MID, Newcastle – 22.5% TSB

3 blanks in the last 5 GWs and 5 blanks in the last 8 have made managers a little jittery about Gordon. Let’s not forget the fact that he faced TOT, LIV, MCI and AVL during that time.

However, even in this torrid period, Newcastle ranked:-

  • 1st for Big Chances
  • 4th for xG
  • 4th for xGNP
  • 5th for xGNP

Now the fixtures turn for Newcastle.

Gordon leads his Newcastle team mates in terms of FPL points and Goal Involvements. So HOLD Gordon for this wonderful run of fixtures.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) – DEF, Liverpool – 21.0% TSB

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the fifth most transferred out defender after just 1 point in the last 3 games. However, he just came back from an injury. He is expected to start against Arsenal.

The last time he started a match post injury was in GW8 and he went on to score 80 points in the next 13 games, bettered only by 3 players (Salah, Son and Palmer).

Arsenal has kept only 1 Clean Sheet in the last 5 games and 2 in the last 9 games. Liverpool on the other hand lead the table in terms of

  • xG
  • xGNP
  • xG Open Play
  • Shots
  • Shots on Target
  • Shots in the Box
  • Goals

TAA is Liverpool’s second highest scorer in FPL behind the injured Salah. Even beyond the Arsenal game he has a juicy Burnley (H) fixture in GW24 before the DGW25 facing BRE (A) and LUT (H). So I would recommend you to hold Trent.

FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL

Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m) – MID, West Ham – 25.2% TSB

Bowen is the most transferred out player and understandably so. With 3 consecutive blanks against teams like Brighton, Sheffield and Bournemouth, Bowen’s prospects don’t look too bright, at least for the time being.

Even his underlying stats are quite poor. He has an xGI for 0.77 in the last 3 games. To put it in context, even Fulham’s Tom Cairney has a higher xGI than him in this period.

His short-term fixtures also don’t seem appealing as WHU faces Man Utd and Arsenal in GW23 and GW24.

So, I would suggest we thank Bowen for his contributions so far and amicably part ways.

Son Heung-min (£9.7m) – MID, Spurs – 15.9% TSB

South Korea will play the semi final of the AFC Asian Cup on 6th Feb. If they win, the final is on 10th Feb, the very day Spurs play in GW24. So, the earliest Son can play is in GW25. But Spurs again blanks in GW26.

With both Liverpool and City doubling in GW25, we can afford to ignore Son for one match as there will be too much demand for other midfielders like KDB, Foden, Jota, Diaz and hopefully a fit Salah.

£9.7m is too lofty a price to hold onto amidst this period. So, sell Son and bring him back in GW27.
