Teams and Players to Target From FPL Gameweek 5 and Onwards

The first international break of the season has given us time to reflect on how we as FPL managers have performed thus far, but now it is time to look forward to FPL Gameweek 5 and beyond, in particular, which teams and players to target moving forwards!

Teams to consider from FPL Gameweek 5(but not necessarily target)

Chelsea

Teams and Players to Target From FPL Gameweek 5 ~ Chelsea

Pochettino’s return to the Premier League has been marred with problems so far, the main issue being scoring goals. Jackson in particular has underwhelmed, sitting at 3xG and only 1 goal so far this season; he remains a risky choice for FPL, as his underlying stats are good, and based on the eye test he is getting into good positions, but his finishing has been lackluster. Sterling has been in excellent form, and looks back to his best, but Chelsea have really struggled to break down low blocks so far this season, and with Fulham (GW7), and Burnley (GW8), he can be avoided for now.

Newcastle United

Similarly to Chelsea, the Magpies have been in awful form, managing only 3 points from a possible 12 so far in the Premier League. However, they are 6th best in the league for expected goals against (xGA), suggesting that they remain one of the best defences in the league. Therefore their defenders could be considered, as they have decent fixtures, but their form is worrying and there are better options.

Luton Town

Despite their double GW in GW7, there are still only a handful of Luton players that we should consider for our teams. The Hatters have an exceptional fixture run, so Barkley and Morris could be options for the short term – Barkley is predicted 15.3 points over the next 3 (using Fantasy Football Hub’s predicted points tool), so could offer good value at only 5 million, and Morris has both the highest xA and the highest xG in the Luton squad.

Manchester City

While City are no doubt the best team in the league, their fixtures are not easy, playing West Ham, Arsenal, Brighton and United in their next 6. The other issue is rotation, with Silva returning, and Doku’s integration into the squad, players such as Grealish, Foden, and Alvarez could quickly become minutes risks.

Arsenal have started the season as they mean to go on, taking 10 points from a possible 12, and are one of 6 teams who remain unbeaten. The Gunners have decent fixtures over the next 6GWs (playing all of their toughest games at home) so should of course be targeted. Saka remains the best option in terms of underlying stats, with the highest xGI and joint highest goal involvement, most big chances, highest xA and most key passes in the Arsenal squad.

Jesus can also be considered, as he looked back to his best against United, but could be a minutes risk. His expected data for this season cannot be taken into account (due to the small sample size), but based on his recent performance he is one to watch. Jesus is likely to take back the starting role from Nketiah, so the only other Arsenal forward option we could consider is Odegaard.

Arteta’s side have also been very solid defensively so far this season, conceding 4 goals from an xGA of 3.85, and the loan of Raya should increase Ramsdale’s levels as he attempts to keep his starting role. Therefore their defensive options should not be ignored, and Saliba and White are probably the safest two. Saliba edges it, as he is averaging 0.5 bonus points per 90, compared to White’s 0.25, and neither player offers any real goal threat.

Aston Villa

VillaCRY (H)CHE (A)BHA (H)WOL (A)WHU (H)LUT (H)

While Villa have been quite inconsistent so far this season, they have a good fixture run so should definitely be in our plans. Cash has been playing as a very advanced wing-back in recent games, picking up positions around and inside the opposition box, demonstrated by his 2 goals against Burnley. Clean sheets may be an issue, but this new role has unlocked his attacking potential. His heat map illustrates this, as does his 7 shots in the box so far this season.

Digne may also be one to think about, as he is predicted more points over the next 6 by Fantasy Football Hub’s predicted points tool. However, I would argue that Moreno is the better option. The Spaniard has not played yet this season but recently returned to training and was Emery’s first choice last season. He was also more attacking than Digne, getting 3 assists from an xA of 2.5 last season compared to Digne’s 0 assists and 1.5xA.

Watkins remains a solid FPL forward option despite underperforming his xG. Unfortunately underwhelming finishing is not a new issue for the Villa forward, as he has underperformed hix xG in every season since signing for Villa. Despite this worrying statistic Watkins always gets into good positions and is a nailed-on starter for a team who have already shown this season (against Everton, Hibernian, and Burnley) that they can score goals.

Liverpool have been in solid form so far this season, exceeding many people’s expectations, and while we should probably still avoid their defenders (due to fixtures and defensive form), there is a real dilemma over which attackers to select. Salah comes out on top in terms of the expected data, with the highest xGI, joint highest goal involvements, second highest for shots, highest xA and, and most BCC.

However, if you cannot afford Mo, or want to double up on Liverpool attackers, then Nunez is the best option. His underlying numbers should be taken with a pinch of salt as he has had limited minutes and they may have been skewed by his excellent performance against Newcastle. It’s well known that he underperforms his xG, but he has been more clinical this season, and continues to get into high-quality positions, as illustrated by the fact that he has taken 7 shots inside the box, 3rd best in the squad, despite having only played 106 minutes (Salah: 343 Min / 9 SIB, Diaz: 261 Min / 8 SIB). He is a rotation risk, but is likely to start more games soon as Klopp begins to trust him more.

Gakpo and Diaz, can both be considered, but offer much less of a goal threat than Nunez and Salah, so should be avoided. Jota is a wait-and-see, as it looks as though Klopp prefers other options upfront and he would struggle to dislodge either Diaz or Salah on the wings.

Ten Hag’s side have not started the season well, but with slightly better fixtures over the next few GWs his side will be looking to bounce back. Fernandes is predicted the third highest points out of any player in FPL over the next 3 fixtures (17.6), closely followed by Rashford (17.2), and at 0.5 million cheaper Bruno is the obvious choice.

The introduction of Højlund could change things though, as the new striker looked like a force to be reckoned with against Arsenal. Furthermore, he may enable Rashford to be played in his favoured position off the left, and be the link-player that United have been looking for, bringing other players into the game. Not only could he be a solid FPL choice as United’s starting no.9, but he may also raise the level of the players around him. All 3 are good options, Bruno is the safe pick, Rashford is a wait-and-see, and Højlund is the wildcard…

Spurs

Ange’s side have had an unreal start to the season, and new signing Maddison has excelled in his new side. Both he and Udogie are the obvious picks from Spurs, but many managers are now considering a Tottenham Triple up, despite their average fixture run.

If Son continues to play as the striker in this team (as he did to excellent effect against Burnley), then he is the obvious pick, even with his hefty price tag. He is currently overperforming his xG after that display against Burnley, but we know that the South Korean is a clinical striker, so this is not a worry. If he keeps his place ahead of Richarlison upfront then he is a no-brainer.

Sarr is the slightly more left-field option. He has taken the joint second most shots so far this season for Spurs and has the 3rd highest xG in the squad. Sarr is also low-ownership (3.3% according to the Premier League website), and most importantly low price (4.6 Million), so is a very good budget option.

Brentford

Post GW5, Brentford have a pretty good run of fixtures, meaning that a double-up, or even a triple-up, is on the cards for many managers. Mbeumo remains the standout, and Wissa is the next best option (as suggested in our post on The Best Forwards to Consider from FPL GW4 onwards). Maupay is unlikely to disrupt this starting strike partnership, and even if he does, data from past seasons shows that he is not a clinical finisher and should generally be avoided.

Frank’s side have the 6th best xGA in the league, despite having conceded in 3/4 games so far against some pretty average teams, and with some good fixtures coming up their defence is one to target. Henry is a creative force on the left-hand side, with 0.95xA and 1 BCC, often occupying a very high position in possession. On the other hand, Pinnock is a great aerial threat from set pieces, scoring all 3 of his goals last season from set-piece situations.
