FPL GW5 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

1) When is the best time to use your FPL Wildcard?

FPL GW5 Tips - When is the best time to use your Wildcard?

While it’s very team-dependent, using the Wildcard right now is an option if you have not started strong and want to overhaul your team for GW5 and beyond completely.

Wildcarding now will help you load up on players from Tottenham and prepare a bit early for Newcastle’s good run of games. Many managers already have players from Arsenal, Man Utd and even Tottenham, so the advantages may not be much right now. Another negative here is the lack of information, especially on the Newcastle team and their attackers in general.

If your team looks good, you can even think of Wildcarding from GW8-10. There are a lot of teams with good fixture swings (Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brighton, Liverpool, Man Utd, Newcastle, Tottenham, West Ham, etc.). On the other hand, Brentford, Chelsea and Man City have more challenging runs, and it may be wise to get off their FPL assets.

In case you are one of those managers who try to keep their Wildcard till very late, you can even target Gameweeks 14 (Newcastle, Liverpool, Bournemouth, Forest, Burnley, and Chelsea have good fixture runs), 19(Man City and Brentford have a blank gameweek in GW18 – bring back both teams on a WC in 19) or even 20 which is the last possible time to play the Wildcard.

Unless you are in a position where you have 4-5 players who are at the risk of not starting/injured this week, I’d say avoid using the Wildcard right now. Gameweek 8-10 can be a better time to use as we will have more information regarding in-form players, starting lineups, better fixture swings, etc.

2) Which defenders to target from GW5 onwards?

Which defenders to target from GW5 onwards?

With teams playing more attacking football, this season seen the fewest clean sheets in the last 3 years. (14 in total so far). While this trend may/may not continue, it’s a good bet to look at defenders who can provide more than just clean sheets in the game. Kieran Trippier or a budget Newcastle defender, i.e. Fabian Schar, can be a great place to look at defenders.

4 of their next 6 games are green in FDR and look good for clean sheets. There is good clean sheet potential + the chance of players like Trippier getting attacking returns. You can even double up on the Newcastle defence much earlier than the others.

Matty Cash from Aston Villa can be a great pick when looking at attacking defenders. He is 4th among all defenders for FPL points so far. He is top for xGI, scoring 2 goals already this season. Aston Villa has great fixtures, especially from GW8 onwards, and you can wait for a couple of weeks and move on to Cash then.

Tottenham is another team to consider when we are talking about attacking defenders. Destiny Udogie has looked solid so far, scoring 23 points (joint 2nd highest) and playing very attacking. Even Pedro Porro can be a great pick if you have slightly more funds available. He is only owned by 5.4% of FPL managers right now, and even against teams like Arsenal and Liverpool, there are chances of attacking returns.

Coming to Brighton and Chelsea defenders. I would recommend holding the likes of Estupinan and Chilwell for a couple of weeks, and if they don’t perform as you like, you can take them out. It’s okay to let go of players from Arsenal and Man City. There aren’t many picks from both teams with a high points ceiling. Both teams can get a few clean sheets, but you can get similar value through other teams/players.

3) Should you buy Son ahead of FPL Gameweek 5?

Should you buy Son ahead of FPL Gameweek 5?

This is one of the hot topics for Gameweek 5! Whether to buy Son or not?

Son Heung-min scored a hattrick in GW4, getting a massive 20 points, and that has led a lot of FPL managers to go for him in GW5.

There are a few things to keep in mind here.

Son was up against Burnley, who is an attack-minded team not particularly known for their defending. He also played more centrally in a striker sort of role instead of playing wide, where he hasn’t been that effective. Whether he continues to play up, there is a doubt as Tottenham does have Richarlison/Johnson, who are more likely to play in the no9 role.

We all know Son is a clinical finisher who showed that against Burnley. He had 3 shots on target and scored from each of them. This may not continue every week, and because of all these reasons, I don’t think Son is a must buy in GW5.

It also depends on who you are letting go of when getting in Son. I won’t recommend taking out players like Saka, Rashford or even Fernandes this week to accommodate Son. Sterling is a maybe for me. However, he also has a good attacking fixture against Bournemouth in GW5.

Also, if you already have James Maddison as your Tottenham attacker, you don’t have to go out of your way to buy Son this week. If your playing style is aggressive, you can play the fixture, get him a week earlier, and take advantage of possibly a big haul against Sheffield United.

I am in the wait-and-watch camp with Son. He is high on my consideration set. Suppose he does well against Sheffield United. I won’t mind getting him even against trickier oppositions like Arsenal and Liverpool in GW6-7. But for now, I am not buying him in GW5.

4) Is it time to invest in Newcastle players?

Is it time to invest in Newcastle players?

Newcastle United have had a tough start to their Premier League campaign this season. But with fixtures easing up, there can be advantages in going with their FPL options.

Newcastle’s fixtures from GW5-10

  • GW5 – vs BRE(H)
  • GW6 – vs SHU(A)
  • GW7 – vs BUR(H)
  • GW8 – vs WHU(A)
  • GW9 – vs CRY(H)
  • GW10 – vs WOL(A)

This is a good fixture run for Newcastle, where they can do well on both ends of the pitch.
One slight issue is their involvement in the Champions League and playing in the “Group of Death”. They have to play games against AC Milan, Dortmund and PSG. This will likely result in them fielding a strong playing XI week-in-week-out, and they may lead to rotation in their PL games.

Still, when looking at their defenders, I would consider Kieran Trippier. He is a bit expensive (£6.5m) but has a known FPL pedigree. Fabian Schar is an excellent alternative if you can’t spare that much cash. He is priced at £5m in the game right now and does provide some attacking threat. If your budget is less than 5m, we also have Botman/Dan Burn at £4.5m. They both may not be attacking but will provide clean sheet points at a bare minimum.

There are no clear midfield options from Newcastle right now. Also, with better alternatives available, I recommend looking elsewhere in midfield. Wrt to strikers, Alexander Isak, is expected to be the first choice and can become an excellent 2nd striker option. Callum Wilson is not starting games but has a knack for scoring from the bench. Still, if considering one, I would go for Isak.

5) What to do with Chelsea FPL picks ahead of FPL GW5?

What to do with Chelsea FPL picks ahead of FPL GW5?

Chelsea’s start to the season has been underwhelming, with only 1 win in 4 games, including defeats against Nottingham Forest and West Ham. There has been a lot of hype around players like Chilwell, Gusto, Sterling, and Jackson, but it has not worked out for most of these players apart from that one big haul.

The Blues face teams like Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Fulham and Burnley in the next 4 games, and it’s okay to be patient with them. All these teams have leaky defences, and Chelsea assets can easily go big in these games. I recommend holding onto players like Gusto, Chilwell, Sterling or Jackson during this period.

You can make the move unless you think someone like a Son can outscore Sterling in the short run. Otherwise, I’d hold and see out the excellent fixture run. Jackson also has good underlying stats. He is 2nd for xGI among all strikers, just behind Haaland, but his poor finishing has let him down.

I’d hold my Chelsea players, at least against Bournemouth. They have the 2nd worst xGC after Fulham, and Chelsea can get a huge score this week. Depending on any injury news or new information regarding the starting XI, I can reassess for GW6.

That will be all from my side for this week! All the best for FPL Gameweek 5, and I will see you all next week.
