FPL GW36 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

1) Who are the best DGW36 players to target?

We have a Double Gameweek for Brighton and Newcastle in GW36, and FPL managers are considering this an opportunity to take a few risks with their team. The question remains: who are the best DGW36 players to target?

This is a perfect window if you are a risk-taking manager who likes to chase the upside. You can go for higher upside picks and chase FPL points.

There is more value in targeting attackers at the moment. Unless you can’t field a decent back three, at the very least, making defenders transfer for players like Botman, Estupinan etc., can be avoided. Look out for midfielders/forwards from Brighton and Newcastle and try to ascertain the possibility of a haul.

If you are playing safe, options like Trippier, Estupinan, Mitoma, Mac Allister and Isak are great players to cover any rank loss. All these are popular picks and must-have options if you are trying to consolidate your rank/position.

On the other hand, if you are chasing, you can look at players like Joe Willock/Joelinton or even Callum Wilson from Newcastle. Coming to Brighton, you have Pascal Groß in midfield or even Evan Ferguson/Julio Enciso if you have a striker slot open for GW36.

2) Who are the best Solly March replacements Ahead of FPL GW36?

Who are the best Solly March replacements Ahead of FPL GW36?

Solly March pulled his hamstring in Brighton’s last game, and he is out at least for GW36. Most managers already own Kaoru Mitoma, and a few are looking for a straight swap to Alexis Mac Allister.

Solly March injury update

You can go against the crowd by getting in Pascal Groß as your March replacement. Groß is the set-piece taker for Brighton, and despite playing in a right-back role, he did manage to score twice against Wolves. Only March has created more chances for Brighton since Gameweek 29. Groß ranks 3rd for expected goal involvement (xGI) among all Brighton players.

Solly March replacements Ahead of FPL GW36 - Pascal Groß

Minutes will not be an issue for Pascal Groß, and he will likely play all the upcoming games for the Seagulls. While Mac Allister is the more logical and safer pick, Groß is an excellent option from Brighton if you want to go aggressive.

With many FPL managers looking at one of Isak/Wilson, the Newcastle MIDs are being overlooked. If you want to go differential, Joelinton can be a great option. The midfielder has played an advanced role and scored 4 goals in his last 7 games. This also included 2 double-digit hauls, and there is good FPL potential in Joelinton. One issue with Joelinton as a pick is that Longstaff is injured, and Joelinton may play a slightly deeper defensive role. That may limit his FPL potential.

Solly March replacements Ahead of FPL GW36 - Willock

You can consider Joe Willock as an alternative option if you want him. He has looked dangerous recently, taking 12 shots in his last 4 games. In terms of returns, he has 1G+4A in his previous 10 matches. Since GW27, he has had 24 goal attempts and 15 shots in the box, only behind Isak. He has also created 14 chances and ranks top for expected goal involvement (xGI) among all Newcastle players.

Crystal Palace looks like a very different side since Roy Hodgson has taken over. One player who can benefit from this is Wilfried ZahaSince his return from injury, the Palace attacker is top for non-penalty expected goal involvement among all Crystal Palace players

If you can’t afford Zaha, consider Eberechi Eze (£5.5m) as a cheaper alternative. He went on a good run from GW29-31, getting 4 attacking returns (3G+1A). Since then, he has only scored once but still possesses some decent goal threat. He also scored an unexpected penalty against West Ham (Zaha is the original penalty taker). Whether he keeps taking them is still a bit of an unknown, but looking at the next three fixtures (BOU, FUL, NFO), I would say Eze can be a good punt.

Solly March replacements Ahead of FPL GW36 - Mahrez

If money is not a problem, consider Riyad Mahrez from Man City. After missing out on the Champions League semi-final match against Real Madrid, he will likely get a start in GW36.

He has started the last 3 games in the Premier League, getting a return in each (4 assists in total), and can score big against Everton. Traditionally, he has a good record against Everton. In the 12 matches he has played against them, Mahrez has got returns in 6 of them, scoring 4 goals and 3 assists.

Mahrez can also be a good hold as Man City has a double gameweek in GW37, facing Chelsea and Brighton, followed by Brentford in GW38.

Arsenal doesn’t have a Double Gameweek, but they are still in the title race, with Martin Odegaard scoring 3 goals in the most recent games. It means the Norwegian has gone ahead of team-mate Gabriel Martinelli for overall points, becoming the 4th player to reach 200 points.

Solly March replacements Ahead of FPL GW36 - Odegaard and Martinelli

Both Martinelli and Odegaard have scored 15 goals in the season. With managers mainly focusing on double gameweek options, Arsenal MIDs are almost in the differential category. Outside Salah and KDB, Odegaard and Martinelli are 1st and 2nd among midfielders for xGI in 2022/23. The fixtures for Arsenal attackers are also good. They face BHA in GW36, NFO and WOL in GW37 and 38.

Wrt minutes, Odegaard is slightly safer than Martinelli. Arsenal also has Trossard as a backup attacker who can take minutes off Martinelli as he did in GW34.

3) Is it okay to bench players like Shaw, Trent, Grealish, Alvarez etc., for Double Gameweek players?

Is it okay to bench players like Shaw, Trent, Grealish, Alvarez etc., for Double Gameweek players?

Benching players will be a massive headache for FPL managers this week. Let’s look at the defenders first. Trent Alexander-Arnold is back in form and faces a struggling Leicester defence this week. He has 6 attacking returns in his last 8 matches and 8 overall returns in his previous 8 games. With Man Utd struggling, Liverpool can sneak into the top 4, and Trent can be easily played this week.

Botman and Estupinan don’t have the most straightforward set of games from a defensive point of view. Still, I prefer Botman over the Brighton defender. Brighton’s away defensive record is relatively poor, having kept all 2 clean sheets all season. If there is a choice to start one, despite having limited attacking threat, I’d still go for Botman from Newcastle.

Coming to Luke Shaw, and I am okay benching him this week. Shaw will likely play as CB to provide some stability at the back, which limits his FPL potential. We depend on a clean sheet which is tricky as Man Utd has only managed 1 in their last 4 games.

Among attackers, I’ll be more comfortable starting Riyad Mahrez over Jack Grealish, especially if I have March in my playing XI. Mahrez didn’t feature in the CL game midweek, and Pep will likely give him some minutes in the league. In a scenario where I have March and Grealish, I’d instead take out March and play the replacement over Grealish this week

Julián Álvarez is also likely to get a start in GW36. The game is against Everton, and the potential is huge for any Man City attacker who starts this week. I am okay playing Alvarez as the 3rd striker over options like Estupinan/Botman, as the points ceiling with him is pretty high.

4) Wilson vs Isak? Whom to pick Ahead of FPL GW36?

Wilson vs Isak? Whom to pick Ahead of FPL GW36?

This is a popular dilemma for the majority of FPL managers this week. Newcastle has a favourable double gameweek facing Leeds and Brighton. Both teams are pretty leaky and don’t keep a lot of clean sheets.

Starting with Alexander Isak, a clinical finisher for Newcastle during his debut season, scoring 10 goals from 40 shots. He has started 5 of the last 6 games for Newcastle, getting 4 attacking returns (3G+1A). Isak is the first-choice striker in attack and is expected to play around 140-150 minutes across both games. Another thing to note is that even if Wilson gets a start, there is still a good chance Isak starts but shifts to the left flank of the Newcastle attack.

Coming to Callum Wilson, he ranks 1st for goals scored, overall goal involvement, FPL points, 3rd for Big Chances, and 4th for xG among all forwards. Though the numbers look great, Wilson is still not the first-choice striker for Newcastle and generally gets rested in midweek games by Eddie Howe. Still, he has done very well, scoring 2 of his 5 goals from the bench. Overall, he gets about 100-120 minutes across both games.

He also has a solid record against Leeds. In the two matches he played against Leeds, he managed returns in both, getting 2 assists. Coming to the 2nd opponents, Wilson also has 5 returns in the 7 matches he has played against Brighton, including a double-digit haul.

Another thing to note is that Wilson plays a more central role whenever he is on the pitch. This also provides a more direct goal threat to Wilson, taking away a bit from Isak and negating his overall attacking output.

The Newcastle game is the early kick-off, so we may get the lineup before the deadline. If Wilson is starting, he is an excellent option if you plan to go aggressive with your transfer move.

Most managers will play safe with Isak, as they might even use him beyond GW36. But in case you want to attack in the short run and are also thinking of captaining the option, Wilson is risky but a high-upside pick this week.

That will be all from my side for this week! All the best for FPL Gameweek 36, and I will see you all next week.
