Let’s dive right into it. We will start with the first one.

FPL GW30 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

1) When to use the Wildcard chip? (GW30 vs 33)

Gameweek 30 Wildcard

  • The Wildcard chip is beneficial if you want to dead-end your team in GW29 and set up a new team from GW30-38. Using the Wildcard now can help you set up a balanced squad for GW32 and GW34, especially when you don’t have the Free Hit available.
  • Generally, if you are not happy with your overall team, in that case, you can make multiple moves simultaneously, transferring in players like Man City options, Jesus, Salah, West Ham players etc.
  • There are no significant cons to using the Wildcard. Using the Wildcard this week is a bit risky, though. This is especially the case with a bench boost in GW34. GW34 is still a few weeks away, and by that time, your bench players may lose form/get injured, leaving you with a not-so-ideal bench that week.

Gameweek 33 Wildcard

  • On a Wildcard in GW33, you will still target teams like Brighton, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, and Man Utd players. With the Free Hit out of the way and playing it in GW32, you can do proper squad planning till GW38.
  • Wildcard in GW33+ Bench Boost in GW34 is a lot closer, and the chances of players becoming unavailable/out of form are significantly lesser.

Ultimately, GW30 vs 33 Wildcard is team dependent. If your team has more flagged players or just not the ideal options for the run-in, use the chip right now; otherwise, save it for a later time in GW33.

2) Is it okay to save a transfer in this Gameweek?

Avoiding making forced transfers right now can be crucial for your rank at this Fantasy Premier League season stage. If you believe your team is in good shape and there aren’t any major issues to solve, saving a transfer is the right way.

This can change depending on your decision to get/not get Haaland this week. He was pictured back in training and expected to get some minutes off the bench at the very least.

You can even go on the offensive by bringing in a Man City midfielder against Southampton and the games afterwards. It’s a high-risk, high-reward strategy and might only suit FPL managers looking to play their Free Hit chip in GW32.

Unless you have picked a player at the risk of not starting in Gameweek 30 and you don’t have enough bench cover, you can save the transfer. This will give you two free transfers for Gameweek 31 and one additional gameweek worth of information which can be vital.

There is no right or wrong answer here, as there is no single way of playing FPL. It depends on how comfortable you are with your team without Haaland this week and how much risk you will take.

3) Do we bring Erling Haaland this week?

Erling Haaland missed the game against Liverpool because of a groin problem. He is flagged right now but has been pictured in training this week. There is a high chance he gets minutes against Southampton in GW30. The bigger question is will he start this week?

He is recovering from injury, and with the CL game taking place just 3 days after, Haaland could start from the bench. Having said that, Haaland can still get a good haul from the bench, as the Saints have an abysmal defensive record. Pep added in today’s PC that he trained really well in the last two days which makes things tricky.

In a scenario where you are playing safe, get him in this week for someone like Ivan Toney, who has a tricky fixture against Newcastle. There is a high chance Haaland is among the most captained players for GW30, and even a substitute appearance can cause damage to your overall rank

If you want to go against the crowd, monitor Haaland this week and see his fitness situation before the GW31 deadline. You can then get him for the Leicester game if he is fully fit by that point and assured to start. This is great if you have the Free Hit available in GW32.

Pep Guardiola updates on Haaland:

4) Who are the best replacements for Luke Shaw/Best Defenders for FPL GW30?

Luke Shaw picked up a knock in Manchester United’s last game against Brentford and will be out of the Everton game. He’s however not been ruled out for a long time with ETH adding that he’ll be monitored this week and there were reports that the injury is not serious. If you have a good bench, you can even bench Shaw this week, if you have already used the Free Hit and looking for a replacement here are a few listed below.

Brighton’s Pervis Estupiñán has high potential from now till the season’s end. He has blanked only twice in his last 10 matches. The next two games are tricky with TOT(A) & CHE(A). Still, fixtures post look okay, with doubles in GW34 and GW37 and another double against Newcastle, which is yet to be scheduled (most likely in GW35/36). With a big clean sheet and assist potential, Estupinan is a top pick if you can navigate the GW32 blank.

Ben Chilwell from Chelsea is still a good pick despite having a blank and no double in GW34. He does have a double gameweek in GW37, though. Chelsea has shown signs of defensive stability since they moved to a back three, with Chilwell and James as wing-backs. Chilwell is getting into some attacking positions and has good assist potential. With CL games coming soon, some rotation is expected, but Chilwell is looking good for at least 60 minutes in the upcoming games. (great for defender clean sheet points)

Aston Villa defenders(Mings/Moreno) are also good shouts with Villa conceding only two goals in the last 6 games keeping 4 clean sheets during the period. (More on Moreno and Aston Villa’s defence in our FPL GW30 Differentials blog)

Newcastle’s defence has regressed in terms of overall performance in recent games. They have only kept one clean sheet in the last 8 games, but Kieran Trippier is still a good option. The Newcastle defender is quite attacking and has a knack for picking bonus points (ranks 1st among all FPL players) despite not getting clean sheets.

You can even double up with Schar/Botman, especially if the bench boost is available. Schar is the more attacking pick, but having Botman is okay if you are trying to save money.

Manchester City has good potential for clean sheets, but nailing the right Man City is challenging. Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji are the most regular defender picks since the FPL restart. Still, Pep does tend to take off players at half-time or even bench the more regular players in his team.

Ruben Dias is the most expensive Man City defender (£5.9m) but has started all games since GW23. He also ranks top among all City defenders for ‘expected goal involvement’ (xGI) in the last 6 games.

5) Who are the best forwards to target in Gameweek 30?

Harry Kane remains a good forward to keep in our FPL teams from GW30-38. He is now on 22 goals and 6 assists for the season. He has the second-highest xG (18.14) in the league and has created the most chances (43) with the highest xA (7.94) amongst forwards.

Tottenham, despite their defensive struggles and still a strong team in attack and Harry Kane, is their talisman. He can score, assist, and is nailed to start and on penalties. Plus, he has only blanked in 7 of his 29 league games and has been one of the most consistent players.

Man City’s Erling Haaland is the top goal-scorer in the league and the highest points-scoring player in FPL. He is back in training and will likely get minutes against Southampton. Beyond this week, you’d also want Haaland in your team, and he should be a top priority among forwards.

Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins is in fine form at the moment. He has scored 8 goals in his 10 matches. He is Villa’s main in attack and is also on penalties. He ranks 2nd for non-penalty expected goal involvement (3.12), second for shots in the box (14) and second for big chances total (seven) amongst all forwards in the league. Watkins also has massive potential in the upcoming games and is a great forward to keep in your FPL team.

Alexander Isak looked like another great pick in the attack from Newcastle. Still, he was benched in the last game, where Callum Wilson was given a start. To make matters worse, Wilson scored a brace, and even though Isak came on and scored from the bench, he is a risky pick among forwards. There is a high chance that minutes will be shared between both forwards. It will be difficult to predict whether Isak gets most of them in the Newcastle attack.

If you are looking for a differential option in attack, you can even consider Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal. The Arsenal was out because of injury since GW16 and only made a comeback in GW27. Since then, he has been getting more minutes every game and returned a double-digit haul against Leeds in GW29.
