Top FPL Gameweek 22 Captain Picks Based on Analysis & Metrics

FPL is back after almost two weeks as the league paused for the Carabao cup semi-finals and the FA Cup 4th round fixtures. Gameweek 22 is a double gameweek for one of the in-form teams, Man United which means there has been a huge debate on whether to use the triple captain chip in GW22 on Man untied assets or use it on Haaland in GW23 when Man city double. Last week, Haaland showed us once again what he’s capable of after scoring a hat trick, his 4th so far this season. Let us look at the top five captaincy options and see who comes out on top of the captaincy metrics this week/

The metrics had a 30/38 “returns record” last season and so far has a 17/20 “returns record” this season. Do follow the man behind the metrics @AK_FPL1(Do follow him on Twitter)

Note: “Returns” ~ player topping the metrics getting points returns and not necessarily the highest scoring option of the week. Metrics total points so far: 362 points(24+10+12+34+34+18+12+46+12+4+6+26+14+10+2+26+12+10+16+34)

FPL GW22 Captaincy poll ~ Wisdom Of the Crowd

A double gameweek meant the most popular options would be Man united assets and that’s what is seen in our captaincy poll with 62% of the voters choosing Rashford and Bruno is selected by 17% of voters. Even though Haaland and Nketiah are single gameweek options they do make the top five in the poll after scoring a hat trick and a brace respectively in GW21 which now seems like it was a long time ago.

The duo of Nketiah and Haaland will however surely be at the top in next week’s poll as they double in GW23. Two home games meant high chances of a CS which has made a few voters choose Shaw and that means the top five in our captaincy poll this week are Rashford, Bruno, Shaw, Nketiah, and Haaland.

Haaland always dominates this section of the captaincy metrics and it’s the same this week with his numbers going up after the hat trick vs Wolves. Nketiah is posting some amazing numbers and has the 2nd highest xG not only in the above table but also in the whole league only behind Haaland, He could be an alternate option to Haaland in GW23 if Jesus doesn’t return to affect his minutes. Rashford is 3rd with respectable numbers which include 6 big chances and an xG of 3.28.

Bruno is 4th but has created the most chances(17) amongst the five players, overall in the league only Trippier has created more chances during the period. A defender would always come last when compared with attackers and that’s the case with Shaw this time as well.

Underlying Numbers of the Candidate's Teams

Man City have 25 big chances and 14.05 xG in the last six games, with Haaland receiving nearly half of them. Arsenal and Man United are tied for big chances(16), but Arsenal taking more shots meant their xG(13.15) in the last six games is higher than Man united(10.89). Impressively, Arsenal have played some tricky teams in the last six games including Man united, Spurs, Newcastle, and Brighton yet their attacking numbers are really good which shows their quality this season and why they are top of the table.

Fixture Difficulty of the candidate team in FPL GW22

Fixture Difficulty of the candidate team in FPL GW22

In the Third Phase of the Article, we look at the Fixture Difficulty of our 5 Candidates.

We will use Drafthound’s odds for a Team scoring at least One goal in the Gameweek and the Odds of Scoring more than 2.0 goals in the Gameweek as a whole.

A strong double both at home means Man United dominate the odds, the red devils have a whopping 98% chance of scoring one goal and a 63% chance of at least 2 goals. Nkeitah has better odds than Haaland due to the fixture as Arsenal play Everton whereas Man City play Spurs. Both have good odds for a single gameweek fixture but lag as they are being compared with players who have a double!

Projections Rank of our FPL Gameweek 22 Captain Picks

Projections Rank of our FPL Gameweek 22 Captain Picks

In the Fourth Phase of the article, I have used the Anytime Returns and Projected Points Tools available at Fantasy Football Hub. With the help of the Anytime Returns Tool, I have derived the Safety Rank, which helps in determining the Safest Captaincy Option of the week, while I have used the Projected Points Tool to determine the Explosion Rank, which helps in determining the Most Explosive Option of the week. I have then averaged the Two Ranks to churn out the Average Rank Factor, which I have used to determine the Safest yet Explosive option.

Rashford’s projections are one of the highest we have seen in a while with an 86% chance of any-time returns and a points projection of 14.6 which puts him on top. Bruno is impressively close with an 86% chance of any-time returns and a points prediction of 12.8. Both are great options and their closeness in numbers shows it’s tight between them with a tough call on the cards for people looking to triple-captain one of them in DGW22. Shaw edges out Nketiah and Haaland as he plays twice, Shaw has an 81% chance of any time returns and a points projection of 9.0.
