FPL GW20 Tips – Preview and Dilemmas Answered

1) How many DGW20 players to get on your team?

How many DGW20 players to get on your team?

Crystal Palace, Man City, Man Utd and Tottenham have a double gameweek in GW20. Starting with defenders, you should be good to go if you have two players from Man City and Man Utd defences. Luke Shaw is an excellent pick if you are looking at the Man Utd defence. He looks nailed and can even play as a CB if required.

A lot of managers have Cancelo from Man City as their starting defender. He is a premium option which has lost his playing in City’s starting XI. You can easily replace him with a slightly more nailed alternative like Stones or Akanji. Stones is currently flagged in the game, but he should be a priority if he is okay to start. You can even go with Ederson as your goalkeeper. Having a Man City defender option will cover any potential rank loss.

Coming to midfielders, Kevin De Bruyne is the premium option to have in your team. You can switch and get an additional double gameweek player if you have Salah. Over that, if you are taking a bit more risk, Mahrez is a significant differential to target. Many managers won’t own him, and there are high chances he will start both games for Man City in GW20.

Many managers have Marcus Rashford as a slightly budget option. He is in great form and priced at only £7m. You are getting the best Man Utd attacker (4 attacking returns in the last three games)

Among forwards, Erling Haaland is the safest player to consider. He is owned by almost everybody in the game and is a must-have for this week. Having Harry Kane, despite the tough fixtures, is excellent if you are playing safe. If you want to go haul chasing and are okay with taking a bit of risk, then a double-up with Martial is the way to go.

Overall, the safer play is to cover off Man City and Man Utd with at least five combined players from both teams. You can go for Harry Kane as an additional cover. Having 5-6 players is enough to cover off the double gameweek fixtures. If you want to go slightly aggressive, Zaha and Martial are great differential options in attack.

2) How many hits are worth taking in DGW20?

How many hits are worth taking in DGW20?

We have a host of double gameweeks coming up, including the current GW20 and then GW23. There can be potential double gameweeks in GW21 and GW22 as well. FPL managers are looking at this as an opportunity to take a few more risks with their team. The question remains: how many hits are worth taking in DGW20?

It depends on what player you are taking a hit for and how much potential there is for good FPL points. Also, what player are you letting go, and what’s his haul potential? It is a perfect window to be aggressive and chase potential hauls.

If you are looking to get in players for slightly medium to longer term, you can go -8 or even -12, as hits will be flying around this week. The net effect of the hit, especially if the player has a double gameweek, will be a lot lesser and helps you save your Wildcard chip for a later time. The rank loss also minimises when many active FPL managers take hits to sort their team out.

There is more value in targeting attackers at the moment. Unless you can’t field a playing XI this week, taking a hit for a defender can be avoided. This may not be the case with Cancelo. He looks out of form, and Pep may bench him for both games of Man City’s double gameweek. You can look for a potential replacement who can also be a long-term fix for your team.

Try to look out for midfielders/forwards with excellent fixtures and ascertain the possibility of a haul. Some popular options like KDB or Kane are there if you are playing safe. You can even go aggressive with options like Mahrez, Antony or Martial if targeting differentials.

3) What to do with Man City players ahead of FPL GW20?

What to do with Man City players ahead of FPL GW20?

Gameweek 19 was another frustrating week for FPL managers as the popular FPL option Joao Cancelo lasted 45 minutes on the pitch. Even Phil Foden was subbed before the 60th-minute mark. We have surely got to a point where our patience with both players has run out. The question is: what to do with them?

With Cancelo playing in the Carabao cup midweek,  I don’t expect him to start this week against Man Utd. It’s an away fixture, and the likelihood of Cancelo starting is relatively low. This week, selling him for a different Man City defender is okay. Players like Stones/Akanji can be potential replacements for Man City itself.

The Man City defence also has slightly cheaper options in Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis. I am expecting Pep to rotate quite heavily in the wide defender positions. Both players are an avoid for me for GW20 as there are slightly better Man City options available

With fixtures reading MUN(A) and TOT(H) in the next two games, one can argue the clean sheet potential is less. While you are putting yourself in a good position by getting a Man City defender for the volume of games till GW23, nailing the right one can be challenging. The alternate strategy here is to go for Ederson in goal. It is doubtful he is going to get rested/lose his place in the playing XI. You will get the clean sheet point at a bare minimum, even if you don’t get any attacking upside.

Coming to Foden and this gets even trickier. The Man City attacker has started only twice in the last six games. I see him starting one of the games in GW20, but I understand the temptation to take him out. It is only viable to move towards Kevin De Bruyne, who looks like the nailed attacker in the Man City lineup. If you are playing safe, that is the move to go for this week.

If you are going for a third Man City attacker besides KDB and Haaland, Riyad Mahrez looks like a great punt. He is getting more minutes since the FPL restart and has shown shades of outstanding form. If I choose a second Man City midfielder, I will go for Mahrez over Foden.

4) Is it okay to play the Triple Captain chip this week?

Is it okay to play the Triple Captain chip this week?

This week, using the Triple Captain chip is a popular discussion in the FPL community. The most obvious choice is Erling Haaland(Should you Triple Captain Haaland in FPL DGW20?(Special Analysis)). The Man City forward has been in great form, scoring 21 times in the league this season.

From what we know right now, Man City’s fixtures in GW20 read MUN(A) and TOT(H). These get a bit better in GW23 when they have AVL(H) and ARS(A). What you lose in fixture difficulty in GW20, you gain some back with available information. There is always a possibility of Haaland getting injured or some new information altering our plans to use the Triple Captain chip later. There is also potential for double gameweeks in the future (GW29/34/37), but nothing is confirmed yet.

If you are looking at other options for triple captaincy, KDB can be a great alternative to Erling Haaland. He has been the creative spark in the Man City attack, already getting ten assists this season. When compared to Haaland, he has significantly less goal threat, and that can be a reason why a lot of managers won’t go there.

If you are trying to gain ground on your mini-league rivals and want to have some fun, you can go with options like Marcus Rashford or Harry Kane. Both players have been in great form and are likely to start both games. Both also face Man City as a part of their double gameweek, which is a bit tricky to predict right now.

Of the two, I slightly prefer Harry Kane because he is vital to Tottenham’s attacks. There is a high chance that Kane will be involved if Spurs get anything in attack. The biggest worry with him is that he is on four yellow cards. If he gets a booking against Arsenal, he won’t feature against Man City, which will be a considerable loss.

Haaland is still the best triple captaincy option, whether you look at GW20 or 23.

5) Should you play your Wildcard ahead of FPL GW20?

Should you play your Wildcard ahead of FPL GW20?

With four teams having a double gameweek in GW20, many managers are considering using the Wildcard chip this week to take advantage of the extra fixtures. It’s still very team dependent.

If most of your team already includes players from Man City, Man United, Arsenal, Newcastle or even Tottenham, a Wildcard is not needed. Suppose your team has players like Cancelo and Foden or even slightly risky attacking options like Nunez or Martial. You can take them out through regular transfers, and you don’t need to use the Wildcard chip.

On the other hand, if you don’t have players from Man City and Man Utd, a Wildcard will sort your team as you can attack this double gameweek and the fixtures beyond.

Another thing to note is that this week’s Wildcard team might not be very different from the template team (team comprising popular picks). If you are far off from that scenario, you can go on the offensive and set up a strong squad for GW20. You will also be ahead of FPL managers, taking multiple hits to field their desired team this week and then Wildcard later.

If you are far from your ideal team, using the Wildcard should give you stability, but make sure to list the pros and cons before hitting that Wildcard button. Using it in GW20 instead of later might leave you exposed for blank or even bigger double gameweeks. It’s essential to look at your team, see what you are gaining and letting go and accordingly take the call.
