Isaac Newton once said, “What goes up must come down.”
We thought he was talking about gravity. Little did we know that he was talking about Almiron’s stock. A darling of the FPL world, Almiron was so much in demand that between GW9 and GW18 his price increased from £5.0 m to £5.9 m. But he was consistently outperforming his XG during that period. So, it comes as no surprise that he failed to live up to his lofty benchmarks scoring 11 points across the last 4 game weeks. As a result, he is the 2nd most transferred out player for this game week and 1st among midfielders.
So, who can replace Almiron in your FPL team and be a budget enabler from FPL DGW22 onwards? Let us have a look at some of the FPL midfielders below £7.0 m you can consider in your teams starting gameweek 22.
Best Budget Midfielders/ Almiron Replacements ahead of FPL DGW22
Martin Ødegaard (Arsenal) – £6.9 m
An astonishing 81 points in the last 11 games have catapulted Ødegaard right up everyone’s fantasy list. Arsenal has a DGW23, won’t blank in GW28, mostly does not blank in GW32, and has a chance of having one more DGW in 29/34/37. Ødegaard offers a guaranteed starting route into the league leaders’ attack which has scored the 2nd highest number of goals in the league.
Cons: Although the Norwegian sits in the Top 10 for XGI for the season, when you look at the last 2 matches, or even the last 4 matches, he is not even in the Top 20 for XGI underlining the fact that his attacking involvement has reduced of late.

Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton & Hove Albion) – £5.1 m
Everyone loves a shiny penny and Mitoma is the new kid on the block. To put things in context, before facing Chelsea in GW 14, he was in the teams of less than 4000 managers and had scored 10 points in 11 games. Over the next 8 games, he has scored 46 points and is currently sitting in almost 330,000 teams. And the hype around the Japanese is not unjustified. He showed his poise in cracking the 90th min winner to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup. Amongst BHA assets, he is ranked 2nd in terms of XGI. With Trossard permanently gone, it is Mitoma’s place to lose.
Cons: Brighton’s fixtures till GW28 look a bit murky. They
- Blank in GW25 if Newcastle reach the EFL Cup Final
- Blank in GW28 if they or Man Utd reach FA Cup QFs
- However, Brighton could double in a UCL midweek in GW 26/27.
Secondly, Mitoma’s underlying numbers are not extremely exciting. In the last 6 matches, midfielders who are in a similar price bracket like Martin Ødegaard, Morgan Gibbs-White, Jack Grealish, James Ward-Prowse, Gabriel Martinelli, Solly March, Casemiro, and Harvey Barnes have higher XGI when compared to Mitoma.

Solly March (Brighton & Hove Albion) – £5.2 m
Coming £0.1 m higher than Mitoma, March is no means a second fiddle to his Japanese colleague. In fact, both in the entire season as well as since the restart post World Cup, March has comfortably outscored Mitoma in terms of FPL points, chances created, big chances created, XG, XA and XGI.
Cons: Before the World Cup, March had returned 0 goals and 3 assists till GW16. Since the restart in GW 17, he has scored 4 goals and 2 assists.
March’s Numbers | GW 1-16 | GW 17-21 |
Minutes Per FPL Point | 27.4 | 9.0 |
Minutes Per xG | 458.9 | 252.1 |
Minutes Per xA | 844.1 | 361.7 |
Minutes Per xGI | 297.3 | 148.6 |
Minutes Per Attempt | 44.7 | 32.0 |
Minutes Per Chance Created | 71 | 46 |
His form could be streaky like Almiron and the purple patch could be over already. But then he did get a quality big chance vs Leicester which he missed, the chances are still there whether he keeps converting is the question to be answered. In GW21 he also had the highest xG amongst all Brighton players, and took the most shots as well. Mitoma against Leicester had one shot, one shot on target, and a goal taking 3 bonus too thanks to a brilliant goal.
Secondly, the blank fixtures as mentioned in Mitoma’s case, apply for March as well.

Casemiro (Manchester United) – £4.9 m
Manchester United have had mixed to tough luck with Brazilians. Casemiro alone has turned that trend 180 degrees in the space of half a season. There is buzz that Casemiro has been the biggest impact transfer of the last summer window. Though that might be contested at some pubs, there should be no debate that he is right up there in the Top 3 at least. Of all the matches Casemiro has started in the EPL, Man Utd has lost just 1 of them (against Aston Villa).
Ever since the restart, Casemiro has started 5 games, played full 90 mins in each of them, and scored 1 goal 2 assists, and 27 points. You cannot ask for more from your 5th FPL midfielder. He is in red-hot form after scoring a brace against Reading in the FA Cup. Manchester United of course has a DGW22 thus giving him an edge for this week over the above-mentioned assets.
Cons: Unlike the first few GWs, Man Utd assets are a hot property right now. Rashford, Bruno, and Shaw are the more popular assets while Weghorst, Martinez, De Gea, and Antony are generating buzz as well. Casemiro blocks a Man Utd spot but more importantly does not get points for clean sheets, and his deep playmaker role makes his chances of getting attacking returns relatively slimmer.

Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal) – £6.7 m
Yes, he is in the list, this is not a typo. Not too long ago, Martinelli was the favorite of many. Starting the season at £6.0 m, Martinelli quickly caught the fancy of the FPL managers rising to £6.9 m owing to his stellar performances. He delivered almost consistently, with an occasional miss here & there. It is staggering to see people selling him. People might be put off by his 3 blanks in the last 3 games. But keep in mind those 3 games were against Newcastle, Spurs, and Man Utd – 3 teams that are currently in the Top 5. He is a sure shot HOLD or BUY
Cons: Almost every single starting player in the Arsenal team has outscored Martinelli in the last 3 games – from defenders to midfielders to forwards and even goalkeeper. Given Arsenal assets are hot property, if Martinelli does not fire soon, you might see drops in (i) his price and (ii) your rank.

Conclusion
Holding onto Almiron is an option as well as he faces WHU and BOU in the next two fixtures. He is easily benchable and the precious FT can be used elsewhere; especially with the possibility of Cancelo leaving Man City looking large and KDB → Bruno → KDB doing the rounds in social media.
