In their day, they might turn out to be the heroes of a matchday which can make a lot of difference for you later. Best Defenders to Target in World Cup Fantasy
Premium Defenders World Cup Fantasy (5.5m – 6m)
The premium bracket offers some of the nicest options which can be hardly ignored.
Denzel Dumfries | NETHERLANDS | $6m
Fixture: Senegal, Ecuador, Qatar
Those who played the Euro Fantasy 2020, know Dumfries very well. He was one of the best fantasy assets in the game. Understandably, he is the most pricey defender in the World Cup 2022 game and probably perfectly justified. Netherlands have a great fixture run in their group stage. They have an 88.9% chance to qualify and a 71.4% chance to win Group A. Dumfries plays as a wingback and often joins the attacks. He was an injury doubt but the latest news suggests he will be fit to start from the first game.

Cristian Romero | ARGENTINA | $5.5m
Fixtures: Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland
Argentina come to the world cup with a decent run of form after winning Copa America last year and Finalissima against the Euro Champions – Italy. Romero is the most nailed defender on Scaloni’s side. Argentina are in one of the easiest groups and are expected to win all the games in their group stage. They have a 92.4% chance to qualify and a 71.4% chance to win the group. Argentina have kept 12 clean sheets in their last 14 games.

Thiago Silva | BRAZIL | $6m / Marquinhos | BRAZIL | $5.5m
Fixtures: Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon
Brazil are one of the favourites to win the world cup this year. They conceded only 5 goals in 17 matches in the World Cup Qualification (CONMEBOL). Both Thiago Silva and Maquinhos are expected to start at the back. Marquinhos started the highest number of games (18) for Brazil in 2022 and scored 3 goals. Brazil have kept 7 clean sheets in their last 10 games.
Joao Cancelo | PORTUGAL | $6m
Fixtures: Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea
Joao Cancelo is one of the best fullbacks in the world right now. Portugal’s defense lineup looks solid on paper. Cancelo scored 2 goals and 1 assist for Man City this season and he is always involved in the attacks. He certainly has haul potential. Their recent defensive form has not been outstanding though, they have kept 4 clean sheets in the last 8 games.

BELGIUM
Thomas Meunier | BELGIUM | $6m Castagne | BELGIUM | (not added to the game yet)
Fixtures: Canada, Morocco, Croatia
It is tough to say who is going to be the regular starter in that attacking right-wingback position for Belgium in the world cup. But it is safe to say it will be one between Meunier of Borrusia Dortmund and Timothy Castagne of Leicester. Castagne has not been added to the game yet. Belgium play a friendly game against Egypt and that might suggest who will be the first choice. Their first two fixtures are great for potential clean sheets. Castagne has been playing really well for Leicester this season and Meunier has always been a big-stage performer for the Belgian side. Keep a close eye on these two and their latest lineup if you want a defender from Belgium.

Mid-Priced Defenders World Cup Fantasy ($4.5m-$5.0m)
ENGLAND
Kieran Trippier | ENGLAND| $5.0m/Luke Shaw | ENGLAND| $5.0m
Fixtures: Iran, USA, Wales
Kieren Trippier and Luke Shaw are the two enticing picks in this price bracket. Many of the managers won’t hesitate to double up as they have a good fixture for keeping clean sheets. But England’s recent form has been really poor, they have failed to win a single one in their last 6 games. However, Trippier being on most of the set-piece duties and priced only $5.0m makes him a bargain. He has been one of the best performers so far in the Premier League this season for Newcastle.

Benjamin Pavard | FRANCE | $5.0m
Fixtures: Australia, Denmark, Tunisia
Possibly the easiest way to take a nailed defender from the defending world champion side. Their group stage matches look fairly easy except for the Denmark game. However, the recent form hasn’t been great for the French side. They’ve managed to win only 1 game in their last 6.

Otamendi | ARGENTINA | $5.0m
Fixtures: Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland
An alternative option instead of Romero if you want to save the extra $0.5m. He is the second nailed center-back for the Albiceleste side and is a good header of the ball which makes him a set-piece threat. Though the recent form of Lisandro Martinez might tempt Scaloni to think about this spot twice.

Alphonso Davies | CANADA| $5.0m
Fixtures: Belgium, Croatia, Morocco
Canada most probably will not keep any clean sheets but the Bayern star Alphonso Davies is tempting for his out of position role for Canada. He plays mostly as a Left winger/Attacking Mid for his national team which makes him a great option for attacking returns. If Canada score, it is fair to say the possibility of Alphonso’s involvement will be quite high.

JOAKIM MAEHLE | DENMARK| $4.5M
Fixtures: Tunisia, France, Australia
Another popular pick from the Euro Fantasy 2020 from Denmark. He often likes to join in the attacks for the Danish side. He’s had 12 attacking returns in his last 20 games for Denmark which makes him one of the best defensive picks in this world cup. Denmark won 4 of their last 6 games and they beat France twice in the process.

BRAZIL
ALEX SANDRO | BRAZIL | $5.0M/ ALEX TELLES | BRAZIL | $4.5M
Fixtures: Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon
It is unclear to predict who will play in the Left Back position for Brazil in the world cup. Most probably Alex Sandro will nail himself in this spot as he started 9 games for Brazil in 2022. But Alex Telles started the last two games which makes it a little difficult to know who’s going to start. I would rather suggest getting Marquinhos if your bank approves.

SWITZERLAND
RODRIGUEZ – $4.5M
Fixtures: Cameroon, Brazil, Serbia
A defender who takes penalties is a dream for fantasy managers. For this reason, the Swiss defender Ricardo Rodriguez becomes a popular pick. Other than the Brazil game, a lucky clean sheet might come which will be a bonus.

ECUADOR
ESTUPIÑÁN |- $4.5M
Fixtures: Qatar, Netherlands, Senegal
A familiar name for the FPL managers who plays for Brighton. Ecuador kept 5 clean sheets in their last 5 games which indicates their defensive form has been quite good.
Cheap Defenders World Cup Fantasy ($3.0m-$4.0m)
The low priced defenders are mainly to free your funds in order to utilize them in other positions. Below we will see a list who are the best options in this bracket.
RASMUS KRISTENSEN | DENMARK | $4.0M
Fixtures: Tunisia, France, Australia
The right-back from Leeds could be an alternative option for Maehle. Kristensen is also nailed in the squad and plays as the other fullback for his national team.
MATTY CASH | POLAND | $4.0M
Fixtures: Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Argentina
Matty Cash is another known face for the FPL managers who plays for Aston Villa. His first two fixtures are decent and he tends to go forward in the attacks quite often which makes him a good pick for just $4.0m.

Diallo | Senegal | $4.0M
Fixtures: Netherlands, Qatar, Ecuador
Former PSG player Diallo is a nailed fullback in the Senegal side. The African champions could be a dark horse in this world cup.

RONALD ARAÚJO | URUGUAY | $3.5M
Fixtures: South Korea, Portugal, Ghana
An absolute bargain in this price range. There’s still some injury doubt but if he starts for Uruguay he will be one of the best cheap options in the game for sure.

JOŠKO GVARDIOL | CROATIA | $4M/ BORNA SOSA | CROATIA | $3.5M
Fixtures: Morocco, Canada, Belgium
Last year’s finalist Croatia offer some cheap-priced defenders from their side this year. Gvardiol is more nailed than Sosa but the latter plays as a fullback which increases the attacking return potentiality.
