Top FPL Gameweek 13 Captain Picks Based on Analysis & Metrics

GW12 proved to be a disappointing week with a lot of popular captaincy candidates failing to score but there’s no time to look at GW12 as we have the gameweek 13 deadline fast approaching us. This week we welcome back a certain Haaland and Man City/Arsenal assets back into the captaincy mix after they missed GW12 due to a blank. In this blog let’s analyze the top captaincy option for FPL Gameweek 13 and see who tops the captaincy metrics for this week.

The metrics had a 30/38 “returns record” last season and so far has a 9/11 “returns record” this season. Do follow the man behind the metrics @AK_FPL1(Do follow him on Twitter)

Note: “Returns” ~ player topping the metrics getting points returns and not necessarily the highest scoring option of the week. Metrics total points so far: 212points(24+10+12+34+34+18+12+46+12+4+6)

FPL GW13 Captaincy poll ~ Wisdom Of the Crowd

Haaland as expected is topping the captaincy poll for Gameweek 13 with 47% of the votes. Teammate Foden is the second most popular option with 17% of the votes. Salah is third in the poll this week with 14% of votes, it could have been a different story if Salah returned in GW12 against West Ham but he played on the wing rather than centrally which diminished his goal-scoring chances. Arsenal duo Saka and Jesus are fourth and fifth respectively to make up the top five in the gameweek 13 captaincy poll.

Underlying Numbers of the FPL Gameweek 13 Captain picks

There is no stopping Haaland in terms of individual numbers, He has an xG of 4.90 in the last six games from 24 shots inside the box and 8 big chances. Jesus and Saka are close to each other with Jesus(3.56) slightly edging Saka in terms of xG(3.49), Saka’s numbers show why he is an excellent transfer in ahead of GW13. Meanwhile, Foden(2.31) edges Salah(2.25) in terms of xG. Very surprising but only fair to see Salah finish bottom in this section of the captaincy metrics.

Man City with 22 big chances in the last six games says it all. Liverpool are second in terms of big chances with 16, Arsenal are not far off with 14 big chances. Arsenal(11.41) however have recorded more xG than Liverpool(10.09), in spite of the fact of playing Spurs, Man United and Liverpool in 3 of their last six games. Man City are high flying with an xG of 13.23 in their last six games.

Fixture Difficulty of the candidate team in FPL GW13

Fixture Difficulty of the candidate team in FPL GW13

The fixture difficulty is where things are tight. Liverpool playing Nottingham Forest, one of the worst defences in the premier league, and Man City facing a Brighton side who are winless under new manager, Roberto De Zerbi means the odds are close. Both Man City and Liverpool have a whopping 91% chance of scoring at least a goal and Man City have a slightly higher chances(55%) of scoring 2+ goals than Liverpool(52%). Arsenal also have a decent odds of scoring at least one goal(85%) and 36% odds of 2+ goals but aren’t close to Liverpool and Man City.

Before we move on to the next section, here’s a reminder of how good Man City are at home this season. They play Brighton at home in FPL GW13.

Another surprise here, Salah has better projections than everyone else this week with an impressive 77% chance of any-time returns and an outstanding points projection of 8.8. Haaland could only finish second with a 66% chance of any-time returns and a points projection of 7.0. Foden, Jesus, and Saka are all close and way behind Salah and Haaland in terms of projection.

Conclusion – Final Rank from our FPL Gameweek 13 Captaincy metric analysis

Conclusion - Final Rank from our FPL Gameweek 13 Captaincy metric analysis

Haaland once again dominates the metrics with a CRF(Cumulative rank factor) of 5, the least possible CRF is 4 which tells how good of a captaincy option he is this week. All the other candidates have a CRF above 10 with Foden finishing second with a CRF of 11, Jesus edging out teammate Saka for third and Salah finishes last with a CRF of 14, mainly due to his numbers and Liverpool’s attacking numbers not being better than the Arsenal and Man City assets. However, he still has good projections and fixture in GW13 which can be seen in the third column.

Remember: The player with the lowest CRF is the best captaincy candidate according to our metrics.

Haaland is the best FPL GW13 Captaincy pick after finishing with a CRF of only 5
