James Maddison- Hold or Sell ahead of FPL GW12?

Fixture Analysis

After being suspended in GW11 vs Leeds, Maddison will face Wolves(A), Manchester City(H), Everton(A), West Ham(A) till GW16. To put in simple terms, 3 away games and a game against best defense in the league(Manchester City) don’t look good for 19th placed Leicester side who are struggling this season.

Hold or Sell ahead of GW12?

  • With Arsenal and Manchester City already blanking in GW12, FPL Managers are struggling to put together a 11 for GW12 with most managers having City triple up of Haaland, Cancelo and Foden/KDB and two players from Arsenal(Martinelli, Saka, Jesus and Saliba).
  • We would suggest to sell Maddison in priority ahead of City/Arsenal players due to the nice run of fixtures City and Arsenal have from GW13. We also need to keep in mind that City and Arsenal are the two best attacking sides in the league at the moment and have a good run of fixtures from GW13-GW16
  • More value would be tied in players like Haaland, Cancelo and Martinelli if you owned them from start. It would be difficult to buy them back into your team.

Verdict- Sell Maddison

With great replacements(discussed below) hanging around both short term and long term, Maddison is a sell ahead of FPL GW12.

Would you sell Maddison for a hit in GW12?

  • Short answer is YES! It’s just a 2 point hit if you are taking out a Blank Gameweek player for a player is who is certain to start.
  • With all managers getting unlimited transfers after GW16 due to the World Cup break, it is time to maximize the opportunities and attack for points rather than going defensively. You can also bring back Maddison again for GW15-GW16 if required assessing the situation then.

Best James Maddison Replacements ahead of FPL GW12(Ranked in order)

1. Leandro Trossard

One week punt on Trossard in GW12 and then move to Saka/Foden for GW13-GW16

Best Maddison Replacements ahead of FPL GW12-Trossard

Trossard has been in brilliant form this season heavily involved in most of Brighton’s goals. He has 5 goals, 2 assists, 52 FPL points from the last 7 games averaging 7.42 FPL Points/game. Trossard is the best one week punt for GW12 as he is up against a Forest side who have conceded most goals(18), 6th most big chances(14) over the 6 matches this season. Trossard is also taking up more attacking positions since Zebri took over.

Key Stats- Trossard

  • 3rd for Big chances(6), 4th for Shots inside the Box(19) among midfielders this season.
  • Trossard averages 0.73 big chances/90 minutes which is the highest for any midfielder less than 9.5 million who has played at least 450 minutes this season.

After GW12, Trossard faces Manchester City(A), Chelsea(H) in GW13-GW14 which are tough games. You could go to Saka/Foden from GW13-GW16 when both City and Arsenal have a great run of fixtures as seen below.

Saka and Foden are ranked 3rd and 4th for Expected Goals among midfielders this season.

2. Mohammed Salah

Best Long term option till GW16 if you have the extra money in the bank selling TAA/James to a budget defender

Best Maddison Replacements ahead of FPL GW12- Mohammed Salah
Salah fixtures from GW12-GW16
  • Good captaincy option in GW12 when Haaland, De Bruyne, Jesus, Martinelli, Saka blank.
  • Differential captain option in GW13 when he plays Forest.
  • Great run of fixtures till GW16 means that no need to waste more transfers in this position in the coming weeks.
  • Salah is back to form after scoring a hat trick after coming on as sub in the midweek UCL game and has also got the rest. With Liverpool needing points badly, he should start the next 3 league games.
  • More attacking threat and goal scoring positions if he plays as a inside forward in the 4-2-2-2 formation like seen in UCL game. He is also back in form with a goal in the 1-0 win over Mancheseter City in GW11 and occupied more central spaces as seen in below maps.

Salah Touch Maps- vs Manchester City(Left) and vs Arsenal(Right)

  • Despite having a poor start by his standards(3 goals, 4 assists, 53 points from 9 games) he has good underlying numbers- 8 big chances(1st among mids), xG- 4.45(1st among mids). With Salah back in form, he should be in your plans and one of the Top Transfer Targets for GW12.

3. Mason Mount

In form pick and direct replacement for Maddison

Mason Mount featured in our GW11 Differentials article and returned with 2 goals, 15 points much to the delight of 5% FPL managers who owned him in GW11. • Matches- 6 vs 3
  • Shots inside the box- 6 vs 8
  • Big chances- 0 vs 1
  • Expected Goals- 0.65 vs 1.21
  • FPL Points- 14 vs 28
Mount fixtures till GW16

Mount has good fixtures till GW16, but the only risk of going with Mount is that you can expect that odd rest in the next 4 weeks considering the tight schedule in the coming weeks now that Chelsea also have good depth in attacking positions.

4. Wilfried Zaha

Long term direct replacement till GW16 with good fixtures & no Eurpean Football

Best Maddison Replacements ahead of FPL GW12- Wilfried Zaha
Zaha fixtures from GW12-GW16
  • Best Long Term Direct Replacement till GW16 as he also has a fixture in GW12
  • Even though Zaha had a very ordinary game vs Leicester in GW11, he is still a solid pick with the great fixtures till GW16.
  • No involvement in European Football for Palace means he gets more rest and less rotation compared to the likes of Saka/Foden/Bowen.
  • With all the games winnable, Viera would want his Talisman to step up once again and be involved in goals. On penalties is a added bonus for Zaha.

Zaha- Key stats

  • Zaha has 4 goals, 1 assist, 41 FPL points from 8 games so far averaging more than 5 points per game.
  • Zaha is Joint 4th for Big chances(5), 5th best for xG- 3.29 among midfielders this season.

  1. I’ve got Maddison…but I already have Trossard, Salah and Zaha. I don’t fancy Bowen for a one week punt as it’s against Liverpool so I might bring in another Brighton player just for one week against Forest then switch to Foden in GW13
Or bring in Bowen and swap Trossard to Foden in GW13 instead.
…Or leave Maddison as I can field 11, help!
