FPL GW11 Preview & Key Dilemmas Answered

1) What to do with Mohamed Salah?

What to do with Mohamed Salah?  ~ FPL GW11 Preview

We never imagined that we would have so much to think about the FPL king Mohamed Salah, but it has been a constant dilemma this season. He has not looked the same this year, which has also hurt his FPL prospects.

Liverpool has struggled to get their top goal-scorer going. He has been playing in a wider role, with Liverpool adopting a 4-4-2 in most games. It also means he has not gotten into many goal-scoring positions, as we have seen in the past.

Salah didn’t start in the Champions League game against the Rangers. He did come off the bench, though, and scored a hat-trick. This game may have slightly altered our thinking. He played a more central role and looked threatening in front of the goal. Now whether that continues or not, only time will tell us. But I feel he has the potential to do well, even against a tricky Man City team. Fixtures after that read WHU(H) and NFO(A) in Gameweeks 12 and 13, where he is also an excellent captaincy option.

So, if you have him right now, holding him this week is valuable, especially if you have already used your Wildcard. He is a classic case of don’t buy, don’t sell this week. Now, if you have the Wildcard available and have KDB instead, you can hold him this week and get Salah in GW12 when KDB blanks.

2) Should we sell James? Best James/Trent replacements?

FPL GW11 Preview- Best TAA/James Replacements

James was one of the popular replacements for the already injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the Chelsea defender got injured during their Champions League game against AC Milan. He will likely miss Sunday’s trip to Aston Villa. Still, there is a chance he will be back next week in time to face either Brentford on Wednesday or Manchester United on Saturday. Have an eye on the GW11 Predicted Lineups and Press Conference Updates where James injury status will be immediately updated after the Potter press conference update at 1:30 PM BST.

With James out for at least one gameweek, there is a chance for FPL managers to jump off him, considering the fixtures for Chelsea are going to get a bit tougher.

Regarding replacements, there is a lot of value in going cheaper and putting the additional money in midfielders/forwards, where many high-potential options have come up.

The best possible replacement is Kieran Trippier. Due to his overall output, Newcastle United’s right-back has been the most consistent defender in the 2022/23 FPL season. He is pretty creative, is on set pieces, and tends to always be among bonus points. To talk numbers, he has just blanked twice in nine appearances, scoring a goal along with two assists and four clean sheets.

If you already have Trippier, Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace is the next best alternative. Palace, who was brilliant last season, have struggled to keep clean sheets, but that can change soon. They have one of the best upcoming fixtures, with each of their next four matches scoring just two in the Fixture Difficulty Ratings (FDR). Guehi also possesses a decent goal threat compared to other Palace defenders and can be a great value option.

Lewis Dunk is another excellent option if you are not okay with Guehi or you have him. He is a great differential option over the next two gameweeks. We know he is a significant threat from set-pieces, which will come in handy against Brentford and Forest defences, who have struggled in such situations.

Managers looking at a slightly risky approach can choose Chilwell from Chelsea or Doherty from Tottenham. Both have a good chance of starting the upcoming games and have okay fixtures to give you a differential advantage.

James is not a priority sell, and you can easily hold him for GW11 and maybe bench him to get more information. But suppose you can’t field a playing XI because of a weak bench or are looking to invest more money in attack. In that case, there are some excellent alternatives available.

3) Who are the best Luiz Diaz replacements?

FPL GW11 Preview- Best Luis Diaz Replacements

Luiz Diaz is another player flagged right now, but unlike James and Trent, he looks to be out for a longer-term, forcing managers to look for replacements. Liverpool has struggled in the Premier League this season, but they are still scoring goals.

Straight off, If you have the additional money, Salah looks like a decent option that allows you to retain a Liverpool attacker in your team. Now, I understand he is not your straightforward transfer this week, considering there are doubts about his ability to get good FPL points. Still, there is potential with the Salah move. It also helps you navigate the blank gameweek for Man City and Arsenal as you have a player having a fixture in GW12.

For that reason, Phil Foden loses out as Diaz’s ideal replacement. Suppose you can manage 11 or even 10 players for GW12, and you don’t have the Wildcard available. In that case, Foden still looks like the perfect replacement for Diaz. The Man City attacker has got six returns in the last 3 PL games and is flying now.

If you can’t get Foden because of how your team is structured, then Maddison is one to go for still. Leicester is at home to Crystal Palace, home to Leeds, and then away to Wolves in their next three fixtures – that’s a relatively solid run of upcoming fixtures.

You can keep him till GW13 before you jump off to Foden/Saka. His underlying data is impressive this season. Three goals and an assist over the previous three fixtures are enough for me to get him right now.

Another great alternative is Wilfried Zaha. His underlying stats, like Maddison, are outstanding. The good fixtures and the fact that he is Palace’s leading man and is on penalties makes him the ideal replacement for Diaz long-term.

If you are looking to attack the fixtures in the next two gameweeks, then Trossard is the one that stands out. He is facing Brentford this week, who have been quite leaky. After that, it’s Forest, who we all know tends to concede many chances each game. So the haul potential is there for you to take advantage of and gain ground.

A good chunk of FPL managers already own all of those mentioned above. Bowen is a great pick if you are looking at a differential. He has looked a lot more on it since the last two gameweeks. He has the potential to do well even against more formidable opposition like Liverpool and Man Utd.

4) Is it okay to transfer in City/Arsenal players this week?

At the time of writing this article, 3 of the ‘Top 5’ most transferred players this week don’t have a fixture in GW12. That means they are either from Arsenal or Man City. To many managers, this doesn’t make much sense, and I totally get the argument.

To me, it’s a case of how your team is structured. Suppose you are in a position to field anywhere between 9-11 players for the blank gameweek 12. I think you should also be okay transferring in Arsenal/Man City players this week

Man City has Liverpool this week, and yes, it can be an open game. Still, if you are getting in players like Foden with no Wildcard remaining, I don’t think anything is wrong with it. Man City also has excellent fixtures after GW12, which will set up your team well for the long term.

It’s similar to Arsenal players, with many managers jumping back on Martinelli/Saka. I still don’t think they are priority transfers right now. Still, with the fixture against Leeds this week, there is potential for the Arsenal attackers.

I believe there is no clear right/wrong answer here. I have seen many managers ditch Foden/Martinelli for options like Maddison/Zaha or even Trossard, which is absolutely fine too. It essentially depends on two factors, how many players you are okay having for GW12 and whether you have the Wildcard or not

As I have mentioned, there is absolutely no single way of playing FPL, and it depends on what approach you want to take. If you are comfortable fielding 10-11 players for GW12, then Arsenal/Man City can be easily bought this week. If you already have combined 4-5 players from both teams, then other players with a GW12 fixture may be better suited for your FPL team.

5) How many starting players are ideal for GW12 with no Wildcard left?

Gameweek 12 is a blank gameweek for Arsenal and Man City. Many FPL managers have 4-5 players from Arsenal and Man City. To make things worse, if you have a bench of players like James, Trent, Williams, Bailey, Mitrovic, etc., you might leave yourself in a tricky spot for GW12

Ideally, you would want a full playing XI for your FPL team for GW12. The question is, how many players are ideal for GW12? It will be difficult for managers to find the perfect number, especially with no Wildcard remaining.

Many managers with a core of Arsenal/Man City players will struggle to field a playing XI. Because of this reason, if you have anywhere between 9-10, you should be fine for GW12. You can even take a hit to get to 11 players, but keep in mind the slightly long-term picture.

You will be slightly disadvantaged to managers with the Wildcard chip remaining. They have an option to play the WC in GW11, get a playing XI for the blank gameweek, save a free transfer in GW12 and get in 2 players from Man City or Arsenal, or just play the WC in GW13.

Don’t worry! You are not alone in this; this blank won’t define your FPL season. Try to get in the best captaincy options, like Salah, Trossard, Maddison, etc., for GW12, along with as many players as possible closer to an XI. You should be good to go!

That will be all from this week. Do let me know what you think about these dilemmas. Also, tell me in the comments or drop me a DM on Instagram/Twitter if I have missed out on anything specific.
