FPL GW4 Preview & Key Dilemmas Answered

1) Is it worth playing with three forwards now?

FPL GW4 Preview- Toney

Last season, not many forwards proved viable FPL options for most of the year. As a result, we hardly saw a run of games where managers went for three strikers up top. The trend seems to have continued this season, too, as many managers started Gameweek 1 with Haaland and Jesus and ignored the third striker spot.

The thinking seems to have altered a bit after most popular picks blanked in Gameweek 4. It also has prompted them to look for an exit route. It’s too early to draw any conclusions but going for a third striker in place of a defender/midfielder deserves a proper thought.

If you are Wildcarding this week, the decision is much easier. Going three up top with one of Haaland/Kane, Jesus and Toney make a lot of sense. It helps you get ahead of the curve and reap the benefits of getting an additional striker on your team.

One of the biggest reasons for going away from the template is the possible rotation of players from the top 6 teams with European football starting soon. Now talking about potential outlets, Brentford and Toney, in particular, have looked good in attack. The upcoming fixtures for Brentford look strong from an attacking sense, and there are potential Toney hauls in there.

If Toney doesn’t work out, you can exit to a Mitrovic from Fulham. Gameweek 8 is when Fulham’s fixtures get a bit easier, and there could be some value here. Mitrovic is a central figure in the Fulham attack, and there is scope for some good FPL points here.

Let’s say you have Robertson, Mount, or even Saka in your team. All three players have struggled to give managers FPL returns. In contrast, Toney has started the season strongly with 4 attacking returns (2G+2A) already. In this scenario, selling any of them and playing with Toney up top looks good.

Gameweek 4, where most of the big sides conceded, was a bit of an anomaly, and it’s essential to be patient. In my opinion, if you have players like James, Cancelo, or even Trent, these options are worth holding. The same is the case with midfielders like Kulusevski and Diaz, who have a great run of fixtures coming up.

To summarise, there is an excellent case for playing with a third striker up top. If certain players you have are looking out of form or are likely to be rotated because of midweek fixtures, it’s worth giving a shot.

2) Which are the best midfielders to target this week?

FPL GW4 Preview- Zaha

With many popular midfield picks struggling to find form, there are some excellent alternatives that you can jump on from Gameweek 4 onwards.

The top of the list has to be Rodrigo from Leeds, who has looked in fine form over the first three gameweeks. We know that Leeds is an attacking side, and the upcoming fixtures for Leeds are pretty good. He has considerable goal threat and plays quite advanced in the Leeds setup.

Rodrigo looks like the ideal replacement for Bailey/Neto if you have some extra cash available. I am considering downgrading Mount to Rodrigo for my FPL team in Gameweek 4.

Another option is going for Zaha at £7m. He plays as a striker for Palace and provides a huge attacking threat. He should still be on penalties in spite of the upcoming fixtures not being that straightforward, which is why I prefer Rodrigo over Zaha.

Suppose you want to go towards a differential route. In that case, Gundogan is another option with a lot of potential in the upcoming games. We know Pep likes to play with a runner in midfield, and Gundogan is excellent at making late runs into the box. The only worry with Gundogan is his minutes. With Champions League fixtures starting soon, there is a chance of possible rotation in that City midfield

If you still want to retain that 8m midfield spot but are unsure about the above options, you can even go for Luiz Diaz or Kulusevski. Both are playing for top-scoring teams and should be heavily involved in the attack in the coming games.

In my opinion, Rodrigo is still the best value midfielder to target this week and should be a priority for your FPL teams.

3) Should you play the Wildcard in Gameweek 4?

A poor gameweek for most managers with the premium defence has pushed them towards using a Wildcard in Gameweek 4. I still feel it’s too early to play the Wildcard this week. There could be better opportunities from Gameweek 5 onwards as we will get more information on possible minutes and rotation for many potential FPL options.

I feel even a change in team structure can be achieved with a few transfers in most cases and doesn’t require major surgery. Still, if you are far from your ideal team, using the Wildcard should give you some stability, but make sure to list the pros and cons before hitting that Wildcard button.

The decision to use the Wildcard is very team specific, and the reasons to do so could be different for different FPL managers.

Check this Wildcard draft and see how far off you are from the ideal team for Gameweek 4 and beyond.

4) What to do with Tottenham’s Ivan Perisic?

FPL GW4 Preview- Perisic

Ivan Perisic has been a problematic hold for FPL managers considering he only played 35 minutes in the first two games. Gameweek 3 was a lot better, and we saw his true FPL potential. He started in the wing-back role and continuously made runs in the opposition box. His crossing ability is unquestionable, and he has multiple outlets to FPL points.

There is some information circling in the FPL community around him getting injured in the last game, but I won’t read too much into it just yet. Until we confirm the news in Conte’s press conference, he should feature in Gameweek 4. Conte has spoken quite highly about him, and it is clear that he is ahead of Sessegnon in the pecking order

We expect some rotation with a midweek fixture in Gameweek 5, but I hope he starts against a tough West Ham team. He might get benched against Fulham in Gameweek 6, especially if he starts the Champion League game.

Considering his massive attacking potential, he is an easy hold. If you are planning to downgrade another defender, especially Walker or Dias, Perisic is the option to replace them. Walker and even Dias, to some extent, have limited upside and solely rely on clean sheet points. Perisic, on the other hand, can provide double-digit hauls despite being a risk in terms of minutes

Downgrading Robertson and getting Perisic is another route many managers are thinking about this week. It depends on how you can utilise the additional money. If you can make considerable upgrades in midfield or get Toney in attack, go ahead and make the downgrade.

5) Who is the best Leeds midfield option to target in Gameweek 4?

FPL GW4 Preview- Leeds
*Leeds midfielders stats from GW1-3

Leeds is currently placed third in the Premier League. Yes, it’s just been three games, but they have started the season positively. Their defence has improved, but more importantly, their attackers are looking great. There are a few options to consider for our FPL teams.

As I mentioned in the blog, Rodrigo is the standout option among all Leeds midfielders. Contrary to what many managers think, I don’t expect him to get rotated even when Bamford returns. Sinisterra is another player who could take minutes off him. Still, I feel Rodrigo has done enough to retain his place in the Leeds team for the near future.

Rodrigo might not be on penalties once Bamford returns, but his goal threat remains relatively high. It will be interesting to see what happens to his positioning when Bamford is back, but he is flying high right now. And I feel it’s always crucial to catch this good run of form that any player shows, and Rodrigo is a prime example of that.

If you don’t have enough money but still want a Leeds midfielder, then Harrison is the next best option. He looks pretty sharp in that Leeds attack. It feels to me that Harrison has taken more of the Raphinha role from last year, which means there will be a lot of creative threat. We saw against Chelsea that he can also score goals, making him a well-rounded player in that midfield.

Coming to Aaronson, who was superb against Chelsea. His pressing was worth noting, leading to Leeds opening the scoring against Chelsea. From whatever I have seen so far, it feels like he can become a viable FPL option, but it’s still a wait-and-watch for me. Leeds has good fixtures coming up, and only if you don’t have enough money to get to a Rodrigo/Harrison, then Aaronson might be the cheap enabler to get for your FPL team.

Suppose I look at one option in isolation. In that case, I will go with Rodrigo. If money is a concern, then the possible option is Harrison, who is ahead of Aaronson for now.

6) What to do with Liverpool players?

FPL GW4 Preview- Trent Alexander Arnold

Liverpool has struggled this season with no wins in the first three games. Most of the Liverpool FPL assets are premium in price, bringing us to the question: Is it worth holding them?

The simple answer is yes, but with a few points to note.

Suppose you started Gameweek 1 with double Liverpool defence and still own both Trent and Robertson. In that case, it’s worth holding on to at least one of them, i.e. Trent, for future gameweeks.

Regarding attacking potential, Trent is top for chances created, big chance involvements, expected goal involvements, and touches in the final third among all defenders (GW1-3). He has immense attacking potential and can haul big in any given gameweek. The defence being shaky is an issue, but Liverpool will bounce back. They have a great fixture against Bournemouth this week, and Trent is worth holding

Robertson is where things get a bit tricky. It is pretty intriguing to see the possibilities if you downgrade him to a James or even a £5-5.5m defender. He is a sell if this money helps you make significant upgrades elsewhere on the pitch. If not, hold him for now but monitor Liverpool’s defensive performances closely and exit soon if there is no improvement.

Salah’s attacking returns have slowed down since returning from AFCON last season. His underlying stats have still looked good; even on a bad day, he can provide you with a return. Combining this with his high ownership and the fact that managers would still captain him in the more straightforward games is enough for me to say he is a hold

It’s a very risky strategy to go without Salah; it only takes a maverick manager to go in that direction. The fixtures from Gameweek 4-8 look much better. They could be an excellent platform for Liverpool and Salah to kick start their season.

Luiz Diaz presents another interesting dilemma to a lot of FPL managers. To me, he is a classic case of don’t buy, don’t sell. I understand the fixtures are promising for the Liverpool attack, but I am still unsure about Diaz’s FPL potential. I doubt his absolute returns and ability to score FPL points consistently. There are enough alternatives in midfield that can cover off Diaz, and he is not a priority buy this week.

That will be all from this week. Do let me know what you think about these dilemmas. Also, tell me in the comments or drop me a DM on Instagram/Twitter if I have missed out on anything specific.

All the best for Gameweek 4, and I will see you all next week!
