How to Effectively Use Free Transfers Till The End of The FPL Season

Hi reader, FPL Flair(Current OR: 466, Pakistan #1) here.  Today I’ll be discussing the most effective use of your Free Transfers as we reach the business end of the season. With only 5-7  free transfers left to use as the chips and doubles start flying in, it’s important to maximize the opportunities available to you – especially if you’re chipless like me!

I think the most important play that non-chip holders should be making is getting the most fixtures for the least number of transfers possible. The main teams that should be on your radar are Leicester and Chelsea, who will have 2/3 DGWs from now until the end of the season and have great fixture runs in general.

This way, the advantage that WC and FH holders get will decrease. Their advantage is having a full or near-full XI of doublers in 33, 36, and 37, and being able to come as close as you can to matching those numbers will be crucial to ensuring your rank doesn’t drop significantly in the closing stages.

However, if you have zero or even one chip remaining it would be unrealistic to expect it not to drop, and maintaining your mental fortitude will be key.

Before going further, Do vote in this week’s FPL GW33 allaboutfpl captaincy poll. The same will be available in the captaincy analysis and metrics blog written by@AK_FPL1. The metrics has a 26/32 record this year. Stay tuned for the GW33 Captaincy metric to see who tops it. Link to all our FPL Gameweek 33 blogs.

Getting these doublers early, for example, the likes of Barnes and Maddison next week is also useful because you can save your 34-37 FTs for any unexpected injuries or opportunities that may arise – like Tierney this week.

These doubles may also end up giving a new lease of life for certain fringe players in your team, namely Aston Villa. I am personally still confident that Coutinho and Ramsey can be fantastic assets and if you can bench them for 33-34, they should return very well with excellent fixtures and two doubles in 36 and 37. Despite a dip in form, Gerrard has impressed me greatly with his management of Villa and I am confident that they’ll be back getting wins sooner rather than later.

Similarly, If Weghorst keeps his place it seems sensible to keep him and not waste transfers on a position that has been fairly barren this season and Ben Foster is a convenient doubler for those who lack a doubling keeper in 36.

FTs also offer chip holders the chance to increase their points by taking advantage of niche opportunities when dead-ending their team or avoiding a DGW they plan to FH in. United in 33 are a solid example of this, those who lack chips will probably be much less keen on selling Kane or Son for Ronaldo and Bruno, the best captains for DGW33 by predicted points, and if you’re able to make that move and WC straight out of them in 34 then that could give a significant advantage.

Similarly, if you’ve decided that you’re FHing in 37 then you could focus your moves on bringing in City assets like Cancelo, Foden, and Laporte because the advantage of players from Chelsea, Leicester and co would be lessened. Finding these marginal gains can make a significant difference as we enter the final stretch of the season.

With every FT being so valuable, the opportunity for luxury moves is close to nonexistent and Salah out is one of those moves I’d classify as luxury. Despite his lack of recent open-play goals, he’s still the player who’s clocked up 20 goals and 11 assists just in the PL this season and is the best captain for GW34, GW35 and DGW36.

Selling him for Bruno or KDB would be shortsightedness in my view, as he’s clearly a fantastic player who can turn it around at any moment and has plenty of scope going forward. That same transfer could be spent on improving the weak links in your team and replacing them with quality doublers, such as getting the likes of James, Cancelo and Barnes.

Of course, you could make that move for a hit, but losing 4 points for the privilege of dropping Salah is a move I can’t condone. Salah out is only an example, and there are other luxury moves you may be considering that may require a second look at!

It’s also important to keep in mind the quality of the players and the quality of the fixtures when selling and purchasing players. While I value teams with multiple doubles highly, there are still plenty of opportunities elsewhere. City are the main team I have in mind.

The fact that we have an absolutely mouthwatering fixture run, consisting of Watford, Leeds, Newcastle, Brighton, and more, in a time where the title race is at its peak and the least amount of Pep rotation will occur could be absolute gold dust for FPL managers.

Cancelo is an elite premium defender, but more under-the-radar is Phil Foden – he’s been mostly nailed for Pep when fit and should be picking up attacking returns galore this season. Similarly, Robertson, TAA, and the previously mentioned Salah will be on the hunt for their 2nd PL title while Son, Kane, and co look to wrestle top 4 from Arsenal. All of these teams offer plenty of opportunities going forward and are great picks for the run-in.

That’s it for me this week! I really appreciate the great response from the community and look forward to providing you with content for the rest of the season! Hope all your arrows will be green this week.

Personally, I’ll be looking to maintain my sub-500 rank with the techniques outlined before though Tierney may be forcing my first hit of the season. Still, this week it’ll be a roll with an eye to getting Schmeichel and Barnes in 33. Feel free to shoot me any questions anytime on Twitter
