FPL GW34 Wildcard – Teams and Players to Target

With the end of the season approaching, many of those who still have the wildcard intact are looking to deploy the chip this week. Upcoming doubles along with fixture swings have dictated that numerous FPL managers, particularly in the Twitter community are looking to play it ahead of GW34. Below, we’ll be taking a look at some of the teams(Liverpool & Man City excluded) and players to target on an FPL GW34 Wildcard.

Teams to Target in FPL GW34 Wildcard

Chelsea

Chelsea are comfortably at the top of the list of teams we should be targeting. For one thing, they immediately walk into a double gameweek consisting of West Ham and Man United, both of whom have been struggling in the league of late. Looking ahead, their GW36 double of Leeds and Wolves is as good a double as any team has in that week. The fact that they are now out of Europe means that rotation should be significantly reduced too, as the FA Cup final isn’t until GW37 and they only have the league to concentrate on until then.

Players to target from Chelsea

Reece James £6.3M:

Reece James £6.3M ~ Players to target from Chelsea ~ FPL GW34 Wildcard

James is undoubtedly the Chelsea player with the highest upside. Those who brought him in for his 18-point haul in GW28 can attest to how enjoyable it can be to own him. James is arguably the best-attacking fullback in the league, in the view of some even overtaking Trent Alexander Arnold. The one caveat with James is that he has been playing on the right of a back 3 recently, although that may be in order to build his fitness up so soon after coming back from injury. Tuchel touched upon how the wing-back role is far more demanding, hence the reason for James being deployed as a center-back for recent matches. Even considering that, James is a brilliant option.

Antonio Rudiger £6.2M:

If James is the most exciting option, then Rudiger is without a doubt the safest, and your management style will probably dictate which one you go for if indeed you don’t double up with them. Rudiger is the best bet for Chelsea when it comes for minutes. He plays 90 minutes in almost every game and should continue to do so between now and the end of the season.

Although he doesn’t provide near the attacking threat that James does, Rudiger takes speculative shots in nearly every match and once in a while, he finds the back of the net with one of them as he demonstrated against Brentford. His marauding runs have become a cult in themselves and that too could lead to an attacking return so Rudiger is by no means a simple 6-pointer.

Marcos Alonso £5.5M:

Marcos Alonso ~ Players to target from Chelsea ~ FPL GW34 Wildcard

If there’s one thing putting people off doubling up with Rudiger and James, it’s the presence of Marcos Alonso at a cheaper price. Alonso has been the first choice at left wingback since the injury Ben Chilwell suffered. Despite Tuchel not particularly trusting him due to his defensive vulnerabilities, he has very little in the way of alternatives in that department so Alonso should play most games.

For all of his defensive weaknesses, there’s no doubting Alonso’s attacking threat so for that reason, he could be a valuable FPL option.

Kai Havertz £7.9M:

Kai Havertz ~ Players to target from Chelsea ~ FPL GW34 Wildcard

Havertz has been gaining momentum as a pick over the past few GWs. He has returned an impressive five goals and one assist in his last 6 fixtures and is in red hot form at the moment. Although he’s slightly at risk of rotation with Lukaku, he should be fine for the most part.

Note: Havertz didn’t start in GW33 and was rested, which means he is likely to start most games till the end of the season.

Mason Mount £7.6M:

Mason Mount ~ Players to target from Chelsea ~ FPL GW34 Wildcard

Mount’s form has been almost as good as Havertz’s in recent weeks. With 3 goals and as many assists in his last 7 outings, Mount is matching the German at £0.3M cheaper. Mount is also safer than Havertz when it comes to minutes. He is more likely than Havertz to play 90 minutes and should start every game between now and the end of the season.

Timo Werner £8.6M:

Timo Wenrer ~ Players to target from Chelsea ~ FPL GW34 Wildcard

Werner has emerged as an option seemingly out of nowhere. From being a bit of a laughing stock, a brace against Southampton, and a brilliant goal against Real Madrid has put him firmly on the radars of FPL managers especially because of the dearth of good strikers about at the moment.

Leicester City

If Chelsea have a competitor for having the best double in GW36, it’s Leicester City. Home matches against Norwich and Everton, 20th and 17th respectively are extremely enticing. What’s more is that immediately following that double, they have another one in GW37 so it’s difficult to ignore Leicester assets.

Players to target from Leicester

James Maddison £7.0M:

James Maddison ~ Players to target from Leicester ~ FPL GW34 Wildcard

Maddison has been the Leicester player catching the eye the most as far as Leicester are concerned. In his last 9 starts, he has managed 4 returns and looks to be back to his best. The one caveat with him, and by extension all of the Leicester assets is that their priority is now clearly the Europa Conference League so rotation will be an issue. Given Maddison’s injury record, Rogers could be particularly cautious, especially considering how vital the Englishman is to the team.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall £4.4M:

KDH ~ Players to target from Leicester ~ FPL GW34 Wildcard

If there’s one man guaranteed to be in every wildcard draft, it’s KDH. Even putting his price aside for a second, he has looked really good of late, capping that off with a goal and an assist against Brentford. When you consider how cheap he is, he’s a no-brainer of a pick. He’s perfect for those planning to bench boost in either GW36 or GW37 and even if you’ve already used that chip, he’s comfortably the best cheap option in the game at the moment.

Harvey Barnes £6.6M:

Barnes ~ Players to target from Leicester ~ FPL GW34 Wildcard

Much of what applies to Maddison is also true of Barnes. Though his returns haven’t matched those of his teammate, Barnes has looked really impressive recently. He should also be a little more assured of minutes than Maddison due to his better durability.

From a defensive perspective, Leicester haven’t really been very solid and there are a number of defenders you’d prioritize ahead of theirs.

That being said though, Kasper Schmeichel £4.9M will be a popular pick.

Due to how ropy Leicester’s defense is, he faces a fair few shots every game so is almost a cert when it comes to getting save points. If Leicester do keep a clean sheet, he will more often than not be in with a shout of bonus points too for that very reason.

Aston Villa

Villa are another team that should be prioritized on the FPL GW34 wildcard. Like Leicester, they have back-to-back doubles. In GW36, they face Burnley and Liverpool, admittedly not the best given the second team in that double. However, their GW37 double of Crystal Palace and Burnley again is arguably the best in that week. Even prior to those weeks, assignments at Leicester and Norwich in GW34 and GW35 respectively are hardly fearsome prospects so the sustained good run means it would be unwise not to invest in them.

Players to Target from Aston Villa

Phillippe Coutinho £7.1M:

Coutinho ~ Players to target from Aston Villa ~ FPL GW34 Wildcard

Without a doubt Villa’s most exciting FPL asset, Coutinho will likely be in many wildcards. Though he hasn’t returned in many matches this season, when he has done they have more often than not been hauls. He amassed a seriously impressive 23 points in his GW28 double which consisted of Southampton and Leeds. Given that he faces defenses not dissimilar from those sides in the upcoming gameweeks, more returns could be on the cards.

Maty Cash £5.2M:

If there’s a player to rival Coutinho when it comes to huge hauls, its Villa’s right back. In the aforementioned GW28, Cash scored a mammoth 29 points and has been consistently ticking over throughout the season, particularly since Stephen Gerrard’s arrival. Although Villa haven’t been great defensively of late, Cash’s attacking potential makes him a very viable option.

Jacob Ramsey £4.6M:

Ramsey has been one of the revelations of the season for Villa. Since Gerrard’s arrival, he has clearly had favor in the team and is now a regular starter. He also pops up with the odd goal here and there and at his price, provides amazing value. If you can’t afford Coutinho or even wish to double up, he could be a great option.

Ollie Watkins £7.4M:

Watkins ~ Players to target from Aston Villa ~ FPL GW34 Wildcard

Given the lack of options among strikers at the moment, Watkins has been gaining a bit of attention. However,  the multitude of options in midfield, not least from Villa themselves, dictates that it may be worth going with one premium striker along with a couple at the cheaper end. Seeing as Watkins fits neither of those categories, I’m not sure it’d be optimal to go with him but by that definition, if you do decide to, he’ll certainly be a differential.

Everton

In spite of all of their woes this season, Everton have found their way into this article. That is more down to the fixtures than it is to anything else. In their back-to-back double gameweeks in 36 and 37, they face Watford, Leicester, Crystal Palace, and Brentford. Regardless of how bad they have been this season, its difficult to ignore that run, not least because they will in all likelihood be fighting for survival.

Anthony Gordon £4.6M:

Gordon ~ Players to target from Everton ~ FPL GW34 Wildcard

It says a lot about Everton that their best option is a midfielder costing £4.6M but this is the position that they find themselves in. In any case, Gordon has actually been one of the few bright sparks for Everton this season. He has returned 2 goals and 2 assists in his last 9 fixtures. An average of around a return every two games for someone so cheap is more than sufficient.

It should be said that we’ve included three players priced between £4.4M and £4.6M over the course of this article. There is an argument to start with all three to allow you to essentially go with premiums across the rest of your team. Such is their value and the number of fixtures that they all have, this is a viable strategy when it would normally be borderline unthinkable.

It should be said that there are a few teams from whom there will be a lot of coverage that haven’t been touched upon here. However, the likes of Liverpool and Man City for example hardly require much analysis in regards which assets to target from their teams. Any serious FPL manager will be well aware of what to select from these teams so there inclusion wasn’t especially necessary here.
