The business end of the season is upon us and the double and blank gameweeks are approaching thick and fast. The next two gameweeks are doubles for Eight and Six teams and the one after that is a blank for 12 teams. Therefore, many different chip strategies are being touted within the FPL community.
One of the strategies that has been gaining momentum is that of wildcarding in FPL DGW28 in order to bench boost in GW29. Below, I’ll be outlining what I believe to be the optimal team if you’re looking to deploy this strategy.

Optimal FPL DGW28 Wildcard Team
FPL DGW28 Wildcard Goalkeepers
Martin Dubravka £4.4M:
With Newcastle having consecutive double gameweeks, it would be wise to consider at least a couple of assets particularly considering their recent upturn in form. A run of seven games unbeaten including three clean sheets over that period, means that going with at least one defensive asset is very viable.
At his price, I believe that Dubravka could represent incredible value, especially in the short term. Consecutive doubles means that even without clean sheets, he’s effectively starting on a baseline of 8 points with potential for a lot more.
Ben Foster £4.1M:
The ideal partner with Dubravka between now and the end of the season is Foster. He is the cheapest first-choice keeper and has been racking points up recently in a much improved defensive outfit under Roy Hodgson. Against Man United in GW27, Foster kept a clean sheet, got a save point and three bonus points to boot to claim a 10 point haul so he is more than capable of scoring big in any given match. As such, you could quite conceivably rotate Dubravka and Foster between now and the end of the season.
At £8.5M, the pairing could be of immense value. If indeed you are looking to bench boost in GW29, his fixture against Southampton isn’t terrible. The saints have had a fairly high shot volume and in the unlikely event that Foster does keep a clean sheet he could be on for another double-figure haul and in any case, he should be on for a save point or two. As such, he’s more than viable to be part of that bench boost.
You could opt for a keeper who has a double gameweek in GW29 but seeing as you’ll probably be holding both keepers between now and the end of the season, you don’t really want too much investment tied up in your keepers, especially with what you’re looking to fit in elsewhere.

FPL DGW28 Wildcard Defenders
Trent Alexander Arnold £8.5M:
The inclusion of Alexander Arnold needs no justification. He is the highest-scoring defender this season and is probably already in your side but if he isn’t, he should be nailed on to be in there. In addition, Liverpool have a double gameweek in GW29 so going without him would be FPL suicide.
Antonio Rudiger £6.1M:
Rudiger is as nailed a pick in this wildcard draft as he is in the Chelsea team. He rarely ever gets a rest so he is the player about whom you’d have the most assurance in playing 180 minutes over the double. Chelsea’s double of Burnley and Norwich, especially from a defensive perspective, is as good a pairing as any team’s. Its more than plausible that Chelsea keep two clean sheets and Rudiger always has the possibility of scoring the odd goal here and there so there’s that attacking potential as another avenue into points.
Reece James £6.2M:
Speaking of Chelsea defenders with attacking potential, Reece James is definitely the standout. His lay off due to injury and form in the immediate weeks before that has meant that he is going slightly under the radar as an option but on his day, he has the possibility of outscoring just about any player in the game. Seeing as he has only just come back from injury, he could be rotated but the up side is just so high that I believe he simply has to be in here. The Chelsea double up defensively is probably the one with highest potential for this week and they have a really kind run coming us so there’s not doubt in my mind about opting for James
Max Kilman £4.6M:
Aside from Chelsea, Wolves have the best double this week, in particular from a defensive perspective. Neither Crystal Palace nor Watford have been pulling up many trees in front of goal and Wolves have one of the best defenses in the league.
The fun pick would be Rayan Ait Nouri but Bruno Lage’s insistence on rotating him with Fernando Marcal sporadically makes him too much of a risk for me. Kilman, whilst not possessing the same attacking threat is nailed on to play every minute of every game so you needn’t worry about rotation. Wolves’ run between now and the end of the season is as good as any team’s too. They play eight of the current bottom half so Kilman may well sit in your side between now and GW38.
Ben White £4.5M:
Arsenal are one of the teams who have the combined beauty of doubling in GW29 and a fairly kind run between now and the end of the season. They are currently three games behind many teams so they’ll have double gameweeks even beyond GW29. If you’re looking to run through GW30 without a free hit, Arsenal are one of the eight teams who play in that GW so going with one of their defenders seems a no brainer.
Although Kieran Tierney is the one who provides the most attacking threat on paper, he has been far from at his best of late. Given that Nuno Tavares has been a more than able back up to Tierney as well, he could well be rotated at times. As such, I’ve decided to go with White who is the cheapest option and should play every game. At £0.6M more, Gabriel does provide more goal threat but this team is stretched for budget so White may be the default option.

FPL DGW28 Wildcard Midfielders
Mohamed Salah £13.2M:
Salah is one of the first names in here and there’s no explanation needed as to why that is. He will be the best captaincy option in the majority of weeks between now and the end of the season and in DGW29, his effective ownership will be through the roof. If you aren’t bench boosting in GW29 and still have the triple captain chip, there’s unlikely to be a better opportunity than that in which to deploy that chip.
Heung Min Son £10.8M:
Tottenham have been very inconsistent this season and may well continue being so, but Everton in GW28 followed by Man United and Brighton in GW29 seem like fixtures in which Son, and Tottenham by extension could thrive. Son has consistently provided the returns of a premium player at a below premium price and that, I believe, makes him a lock in this team and he will probably sit there between now and the end of the season for most.
Raphinha £6.5M:
Raphinha is one of the players over whom I deliberated the most. James Ward Prouse, Dejan Kulusevski and Phillipe Coutinho were all contending for this spot but ultimately I decided upon the Leeds player, partly because there is already coverage of all of the above teams in here. In addition, Raphinha has the talismanic factor for his team. If Leeds’ form is to to improve under new manager Jesse Marsch, Raphinha will be integral to it. Aston Villa and Leicester, the two teams that face Leeds in GW28, have both been very leaky at the back so Raphinha could thrive in those fixtures. So in spite of his recent decline as an FPL asset, Raphinha could be a great pick for this week, and even an outside shout for captaincy.
Jacob Ramsey £4.8M:
In my opinion, Ramsey could represent insane value in both the short and longterm. Whilst many are favouring Coutinho, I hold the opinion that its not worth paying £2.6M extra, and I’m enclined not to double up given the plethora of attacking options at the moment. Villa’s double of Southampton and Leeds has potential of being fruitful and Ramsey has already shown that he is more than capable of double figure returns this season and He could make a mockery of his price over the next few gameweeks.
Anthony Gordon £4.5M:
Other than the aforementioned Ramsey, Gordon is probably the best option among midfielders at his price. Their Everton’s double of Wolves and Newcastle is by no means a daunting prospect either so Gordon could even get a few returns. At his price, its easy to bench him most weeks and play him if and when you see fit so there’s very little risk with his inclusion in this side.
Having two cheap midfielders isn’t generally a popular play but your hand is probably forced in order to fit in the big hitters. If you’ve got a high team value, you could move Gordon up to somebody like Martinelli or Martin Odegaard but I’d be tempted to keep some cash in the bank for GW29 transfers.
Furthermore, both Gordon and Ramsey have shown that they have demonstrated on numerous occasions this season that they are more than simply 2/3 point per game assets so the reluctance in opting for the pair is more psychological than anything else.

Harry Kane £12.3M:
Doubling up on Tottenham’s attack is undoubtedly a risk. As mentioned earlier, Tottenham have been prone to putting in sub par performances on a fairly regular basis. However, I believe its a risk worth taking purely because of the potential up side. In recent weeks, Kane has been back to his best. His performances in the fixtures against Man City and Leeds were two of the best you’re likely to see this season. If he continues this form, he could be an amazing asset until the end of the season and Tottenham also have games to be rearranged down the line.
Allan Saint-Maximin £6.7M:
As mentioned earlier, the fact that Newcastle have consecutive double gameweeks means you’ll likely want a couple of assets. With the sparsity in quality forwards and Newcastle’s newfound attacking quality, Saint-Maximin appears to be a pick which could be fruitful. He is inclined to frustrate at times with his decision making but on his day, he is capable of coming away with a huge return. Of the upcoming four games, if he is at his best in even one of them, he will probably have justified his inclusion in this squad.
Armando Broja £5.5M:
In Aston Villa and Newcastle, Southampton have one of the best double gameweeks in GW28. Prior to his last three fixtures in which he has blanked, Broja has been one of the most consistent performers across all forwards in the game. He is undoubtedly the best asset at his value and given that Southampton have an extended kind run following the double only strengthens the case to include him.
Final FPL DGW28 Wildcard Draft from the above players
Author’s thoughts on the above FPL DGW28 Wildcard Draft
There are a few glaring omissions from the above draft. The absence of both Joao Cancelo and Jarrod Bowen will raise a few eyebrows but I believe that its worth the risk to go without them, at least initially. In Cancelo’s case, he has no doubles coming up and has Man United in GW28. While you might want him back down the line, I believe its more worthwhile starting without him particularly given the number of defensive options putting their hands up at the moment.
In regards to Bowen, he has blanked in his last two fixtures and has a tough upcoming run which begins with Liverpool in GW28. Like Cancelo, he too has no doubles coming up so I believe its time to reluctantly bid farewell to Bowen as an FPL option at least for now.
This squad gives you eight players with a double gameweek in GW28 and seven before transfers in GW29. As well as this, you have six players before transfers in GW30.
I’d recommend taking a hit to bring in two doublers in GW29 in particular to target Arsenal and Liverpool players. Simply put, they are the two best teams out of those doubling in GW29 and they have the best assets. Who you sacrifice for those players depends very much on your strategy going forward and your budget.
The likes of Raphinha, Ramsey and Kilman are all expendable if you’re expecting to free hit in GW30. If you want to ride that GW out though, you probably don’t want to get rid of any of those, in which case you may look to remove one of the Chelsea defenders or even with the run they have upcoming.
Either Robertson or Jota is perfectly viable as far as Liverpool are concerned. With Arsenal, the defensive double up is arguably more conducive to points than going with a midfielder.
