Ivan Toney Hold or Sell? | Best FPL Forwards ahead of FPL GW3

In this article, we will take a look at the big question of whether to hold or sell toney, Best FPL Forwards ahead of FPL GW3, and the possible switch to DCL in the coming gameweeks. With Toney blanking in the first two games, it’s a tough call on what to do with him with some cheaper options emerging and on the other hand, DCL and other options are on fire.

Before going further do vote for us in the Football Content Awards Finals under the Best in Fantasy Football Editorials category. Also, vote for Net That Haul for Best in Fantasy Football Video. You can leave the other options to be blank as well. It will take just two mins and would mean so much for all of us involved. Here is also a link to all our FPL Gameweek 3 blogs

Ivan Toney Hold vs Sell

Ivan Toney ~ Hold or Sell

It’s still early days but many FPL managers are losing patience with Ivan Toney. Not looking very sharp but not bad either! After 2 blanks the big question to hold or sell comes with other options emerging. The next 3 fixtures are not bad and Brentford are playing well as a team. Brentford would surely score a few in the next 3 and I expect Toney to be involved.

Let’s talk a look at the stats for Toney over the past two gameweeks:

Mins: 180
Shots: 5
Shots in the Box: 4
👟Big Chances: 0
🎨Big Chances Created: 0
⚽️xG: 0.40
🅰️xA: 0.19

These stats are not great by any means but he still remains a good 6.5m option in my opinion. Brentford are playing well and the goals will come soon. They play Aston Villa away this weekend who have conceded an xGC(expected goals conceded) of 2.1 over the first two games. Toney has been playing a bit deep recently with Mbuemo making the runs behind the defense.

Fixtures: avl, BHA, wol, LIV, whu

Toney had 5 shots (4 in the box) and an xG of 0.39 in gw2. Brentford have accumulated an xG(expected goals) of 1.7 for 2 games and I expect toney to be among the points soon. Villa, Brighton, and Wolves are good/decent fixtures. Wolves and Villa have an xGC of 2.9 and 2.1 respectively.

Toney Replacements | Best FPL Forwards ahead of FPL GW3

Taking a look at 2 possible cheaper replacements for toney if you are looking to sell him

1. Adam Armstrong – 6m

2. Emmanuel Dennis – 5.1m

Adam Armstrong – 6m – Southampton

Best FPL Forwards ahead of FPL GW3 ~ Adam Armstrong

Adam Armstrong Stats:

Mins: 180
Shots: 5
Shots in the Box: 4
👟Big Chances: 2
🎨Big Chances Created: 0
⚽️xG: 1.08
🅰️xA: 0.18

Fixtures: new, WHU, mci, WOL, che

Armstrong has come in the team and is playing up top with Che Adams. He scored against Everton in the first game and created a chance for Adams which got saved against Man Utd. A good option to consider at his price point but Southampton doesn’t look like the team of the past. I would still wait and watch him a bit before considering buying him once his fixtures swing in gameweek 8.

Emmanuel Dennis – 5.1m – Watford

Best FPL Forwards ahead of FPL GW3 ~ Emmanuel Dennis

Emmanuel Dennis Stats:

Mins: 156
Shots: 6
Shots in the Box: 6
👟Big Chances: 0
🎨Big Chances Created: 0
⚽️xG: 0.61
🅰️xA: 0.38

Fixtures: tot, WOL, nor, NEW, lee

Dennis was on fire in gw1 with 1 goal and 1 assist scoring 12 points. He didn’t look great in the gw2 against Brighton managing to just get 1 shot and an xG of 0.05. Offers great value at 5.1m but its still a wait and watch for him as Watford have so many players that can play as a striker and he’s not a nailed option yet. Spurs next week will be a big test for the newly-promoted side and if Dennis does well he could be a great cheap striker to get in with great fixtures from gw4 onwards.

Toney vs Armstrong vs Dennis

While Dennis leads the way for shots and shots in the box, Armstrong has the highest xG. Dennis and Armstrong both have 9 touches in the box compared to 8 of Toney. Another point to note is that Toney is on penalties while the other 2 are not.

Calvert Lewin – 8.1 – Everton

Best FPL Forwards ahead of FPL GW3 ~ DCL

DCL!! once again is off to a great start like last season. With all the news regarding him starting the first match or not managers went away from him but he has emerged as a great option once again. Fixtures and form are both on his side he is one of the long-term players to target for sure.

Managers who have Toney and are looking to sell him should take a good look at DCL. Yes, there are cheaper options too but they are still unproven in the premier league while DCL is just taking off. Everton are creating everything around him and was on top for xG in gw 2. He is also on penalties which is a big plus and his stats of 9 shots ( 9 in the box), 3 big chances, and an xG of 2.23 over the past 2 gameweeks are hard to ignore.

Stats:

Mins: 179
Shots: 9 (3rd)
Shots in the Box: 9 (1st)
👟Big Chances: 3 (2nd)
🎨Big Chances Created: 0
⚽️xG: 2.23 (2nd)
🅰️xA: 0.41

Finding some money elsewhere and upgrading Toney to DCL seems like a great move. He plays bha, BUR, avl, NOR in the next 4 and these fixtures look great from an attacking point of view.

Conclusion on whether to hold or sell Toney

My thinking behind the Toney Hold/Sell is:

I feel you can hold toney for another week and move on if he blanks again. There are no great options cheaper than him who will surely deliver so its better to assess for another gameweek and plan transfers after the international break. Calvert Lewin is a solid option and if you can afford to get him then its worth it (or 7.5m forward options). Saving a transfer and getting him in gw4 is another options for managers wanting to hold Toney for another week.
