FPL Gameweek 1 Team Reveal
FPL GW1 GoalKeepers
Robert Sanchez(4.5) – I have probably switched back and forth between Sanchez and Bachman 100 times over last several weeks but it looks like I have made my mind and I will be going with Brighton man. Although Watford were defensively solid in the championship and can do well in premier league, there is no evidence of them being good enough at this level. On the other hand, Brighton with one of the best xGC last season, clearly show more promise in keeping more clean sheets.
You could argue that Sanchez probably has low ceiling because of the quality of defenders and style of play, but I have decided to not overthink and go with the keeper having more chances of clean sheet to start with .
Jed Steer(4.0) – I am definitely not spending more than 4.0 on second keeper and Villa’s deputy Steer is my current preference. The reason for not going for ever popular Foster is, if a playing 4.0 keeper emerges, early movers will sell Foster which risks him dropping to 3.9m. It’s annoying to lose 0.1m like that on a second keeper.

FPL GW1 Defenders
Trent Alexander-Arnold(7.5) – It’s really a no brainer. Highest number of chances created, big chances created, looks back to his best form and quite a nice run of fixtures. Huge upside, even a captain candidate if Liverpool look solid at the back.
Kostas Tsimikas(4.0) – Now this is typical GW1 fun pick. First choice attacking full back for a top team gets injured and his back up comes at the lowest price. His performances in preseason have given a decent confidence to me that he will start at left back ahead of 58-year-old Milner. Who cares if Robbo is back by GW4, I am not looking to get third Liverpool anyway(too many premium options available elsewhere) and can’t see wildcard being delayed more than GW7 either. This is a fun-gift that has come our way and I for sure am embracing it with known side effects.
Luke Shaw(5.5) – United’s fixtures are not bad and are certainly going to be better with Varane coming in. The reason for going Shaw is not just the hope of defensive improvement from united, but his attacking numbers speak for himself and his aggressive runs are pivotal to how United play. Shaw has also been taking set pieces for both United and England recently and Leeds have a habit of conceding from set pieces making him a good option even in GW1 which might be a tougher fixture of the lot.
Luke Ayling(4.5) and Ben White(4.5) –
Considering this pair at 9.0 for my rotating 3rd/4th/5th defender. White has newly promoted Brentford in GW1 where Ayling has difficult fixture vs Man United. While Ayling has poor looking Everton in GW2 followed by Burnley in GW3 when White has 2 tough fixtures vs Chelsea and City. GW4 onwards Arsenal have nice run of fixtures so these set of defenders can go long way if I decide to save the WC for later use.

FPL GW1 Midfielders
Mo Salah(12.5) – Another no brainer to start with. Norwich and Burnley in first two weeks is too good to ignore especially when Salah has had a full pre-season and nice rest in the summer. He should be raring to go again this season targeting another golden boot.
Bruno Fernandes(12.0) – When the reports emerged of Ole wanting to play 4-3-3 with Bruno as one of the two 8’s, I was not certain to start the season with him especially when Greenwood at 7.5 was looking good to start first few games. However, last pre-season friendly gave no evidence of that and Bruno looked like his old self, hungry for goals and assists, playing high up the pitch. He also is a great GW3 captain shout vs Wolves when Liverpool and City have tougher fixtures. This season promises to be dominated by premiums given the likes of Lukaku and Kane are poised for moves and soon be coming in our FPL thoughts. Having 12.0 price point for premium switch hit was also a factor I considered going with Bruno to start with
Raphinha(6.5) – For me, Raphinha is at least 1.0m cheaper than what he should have been. His class and Leeds playing style means I don’t have any doubts that he will be a good long-term FPL asset. As I mentioned above, I expect this season to be dominated by premium picks, so I want this mid-priced midfield slot to be set and forget and Raphinha gives me just that.
Iker Gundogan(7.5) – At the time of writing, I am not sold on Gundo in this slot and can easily change to Greenwood/Torres/Buendia. There have been enough evidences that in absence of KDB, Pep relies heavily on Gundogan’s ability to make late runs and score goals. He also shares some set pieces and if he replicates his form of last season, he should get some attacking returns especially in GW2 vs Norwich
Harvey Barnes(7.0) – This is my punt for GW1 team and I am quite sure that it will stay like that till the deadline. He got injured last season when he was on top of his game. He returned to pre season training and looks to have started where he left off. He was brilliant in community shield vs City and his direct style of play makes him very exciting pick in FPL. Defensive injury crisis means Rodgers is unlikely to play 2 strikers up top making Barnes less risk of being benched in early stages.
The new manager of Wolves is extremely attacking minded and I can see Leicester attackers getting quite a few opportunities on goal. I expect Leicester to score a few in GW1 with Barnes hopefully involved.

FPL GW1 Forwards
Michail Antonio(7.5) – A fit Antonio has always been a good FPL pick. In addition to having a good preseason, he plays Newcastle, Palace and Southampton in 3 out of first 4 GWs. With 0.62 NPxG per 90 over the whole last season, Antonio certainly is the best attacking asset for West ham and a possible make away for Jimenez in GW5 when west ham’s fixtures turn.
Danny Ings(8.0) – I had Ollie Watkins in my team but I was not completely convinced in his ability to score goals. Then in one of the best kept transfer secrets in football, we saw Ings moving to Villa. Even though there is some uncertainty about how the new Villa attackers gel, their first 3 fixtures (wat, NEW, BRE) are too good to pass on. Ings also leads on baseline BPS over all of Villa attackers so his goal likely be worth more than 4 points.
Michael Obafemi(4.5) – This is another player I am not sold on, however there is probably no striker at 4.5 who guarantees a start. If Obafemi gets a move away from PL, Villa’s Davis will come in should I decide to stick to 3-5-2.
