The month before the start of a new Premier League season is always filled with optimism as FPL managers build draft after draft. One thing that most FPL managers like to do early on is identify good rotations, especially for cheap defenders. These cheap defenders usually play alongside a couple of premium defenders, maybe Trent, Robertson, Shaw, Dias, Digne etc. So, to save you all the time this year, I have identified 4 combinations of rotating cheap (4.5mil) defenders to have in your side to start the FPL season well.
4.5M FPL Defenders Rotation- Luke Ayling (Leeds) & Joel Veltman (Brighton)
This combination is by far my favourite and the most appealing. This rotation means that you face 4 promoted sides in the opening 8 gameweeks. To add to this, Burnley twice, Newcastle and Palace. So, let’s run through why this is such a great rotation. The Brighton player was originally going to be Lamptey, but with his recent injury news, this frees a path for Veltman to be first choice wing back at the start of the season. Veltman is an incredibly exciting prospect playing at wing-back in a free-flowing Brighton team. Last season Veltman nailed down his place in the Brighton team as either a wing back or part of the back 3. This season I see more attacking returns for Veltman alongside plenty of clean sheets. Ayling on the other hand had a mixed season. An ever-present in the Leeds side, playing in every Premier League game, earning 12 clean sheets. Ayling also had a huge attacking threat but didn’t manage a goal or assist all season long. He became a bit of a meme in the FPL community for this, but his luck is due to change and I’m predicting a big season for the Leeds man. So, two attacking fullbacks, in two good sides both offensively and defensively, that rotate well together, an FPL managers dream. The above graphic shows just how well these two players rotate, this could be hugely effective in your FPL team.

4.5M FPL Defenders Rotation- Ben White & Joel Veltman
The next combination is Ben White & Joel Veltman, both currently Brighton players but with Ben White on the verge of a move to Arsenal, this is a rotation I like a lot. We have already spoken about Veltman’s attacking and defensive potential, but Ben White is a bit different. White is joining Arsenal for a big price tag; he will surely be the first choice centre back and will strengthen the Arsenal defence. Last season, Arsenal were statistically the 3rd best defence across the season. With White’s transfer, this defence will only get stronger, and I can see plenty of clean sheets for Arsenal this season. So why do Arsenal and Brighton rotate well? As you can see from the graphic above, the fixtures are very good in a rotation between these two assets.

FPL 4.5M Defenders Rotation – Joel Veltman and Kiko Femenia
The third combination again involves Brighton and Veltman but this time alongside Kiko Femenia of Watford. Usually, when a promoted side come up FPL players tend to avoid their defensive players. However, Watford have a great fixture run to start with which makes their assets tempting. To go alongside these nice fixtures, Watford were the best defence in the championship last season. They only conceded 30 goals and kept an extremely impressive 23 clean sheets. These stats are impressive enough to warrant us getting a Watford defender in our Gameweek 1 sides. The graphic above shows how the Brighton and Watford fixtures can provide an impressive rotation for your FPL sides.

FPL 4.5M Defenders Rotation- Mitchell and Jamal Lascelles
I think we have established that Brighton start the season with good fixtures so will be a good rotation but let’s look elsewhere, where are the differentials? Well, Tyrik Mitchell (Crystal Palace) and Jamal Lascelles (Newcastle) could provide another decent rotation. With a new manager at Crystal Palace, Patrick Vieira will want to solidify the Palace defence. This could improve the defensive output for Mitchell. Vieira is also known to let his full-backs overlap so Mitchell may increase his attacking output too which makes him an interesting option this season. Meanwhile, Steve Bruce is known for having a compact defence which makes Lascelles encouraging. Lascelles also tends to grab a goal or two from set-pieces so could be a good option. In this rotation, there are fixtures against Brentford, Watford, Saints, Leeds, West Ham and Spurs in the first six. Some room for clean sheets and potential attacking returns. So, if you want to be a bit different, this could be the rotation for you.
