Welcome to our very first blog of the 2021/22 Fantasy Premier League season, here we’re going to discuss how to set up your first fantasy team and some basic rules, tips that you need to keep in mind while playing this game. The official FPL (Fantasy Premier League) game rules are quite simple and straightforward, especially when you compare them with other fantasy football games.
Fantasy Premier League 2021/22 Rules, Tips and Advice
Squad and Budget
Premier League consists of 38 Matchweeks in total, so before the starting of the 1st Matchweek, you’re given a draft where you’re allowed to choose 15 players – two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders, and three forwards, with a restriction of not more than 3 players from a particular club. The 15 players that have been selected are to be within your budget of not more than £100m as a whole.
Formation
The formation has a specific restriction as you need to have at least one goalkeeper, three defenders, 2 midfielders, and 1 forwards. The most popular formation is 3-4-3 but any formation can potentially be used successfully with the likes of 4-5-1 or 3-5-2 lineup.
Captains and Vice Captains
From your playing 11, you can choose your captain and vice-captains, selecting your captain for a specific match week is really very important as it doubles up that player’s point which he scored in that match week. The role of vice-captain comes in when the captain does not play a single minute in that match week now your vice-captain becomes the captain of your team and his points get doubled up.
Bench
Prioritizing your bench is very important. If your goalkeeper does not play a single minute in that match week, your substitute goalkeeper will replace him. If any of your squad players does not feature a single minute in that matchweek, they’ll be substituted by the highest priority outfield substitute without breaking the formation, i.e. if your team has 3 defenders then only a defender can replace another defender.
Scoring
Generally, your outfield players are rewarded for goals, assists and clean sheets (for defenders and midfielders only), while your goalkeeper is rewarded for keeping a clean sheet, saves and penalty saves. Forwards are awarded four points for a goal, midfielders get five, defenders get six and everyone gets three points for an assist. Players may also receive up to three bonus points if they perform very well according to the Bonus Points System (BPS).

Transfers
There are unlimited transfer in the 1st match week, but from the next Gameweeks you will be given one free transfer (FT) to use in order to make changes to your squad, if not used can accumulate up to a maximum of two FTs. If you wish to make additional transfers beyond your allotment of FTs then each additional move will cost you a four-point deduction (often referred to as ‘taking a hit’).
Chips
Chips can be used to potentially enhance your team’s performance during the season. Only one chip can be played in a single Gameweek. The chips available are two Wildcards, one Bench Boost, one Free Hit, and one Triple Captain chip. These chips are very useful and you should give a lot of consideration as to when is the best time to use them. Timely and successful use of chips can add substantially to your points return and make all the difference to your overall rank.

Rank and Mini Leagues
Your team’s cumulative score across the season results in your overall rank (OR) – your position versus every other team in the game. For a rough gauge of OR for experienced managers – finishing in the top 250k is considered to be an okay season, top 100k is a good season, top 50k is very good, top 10k is a great season and top 1k is a fantastic achievement.
While only a selected few managers will ever win the overall game, most of us compete in several mini-leagues (MLs) against friends, family, and wider groups within the FPL community. You can set up your own ML or join existing ones, public or private. You’ll need to receive a code from the league’s administrator to join a private league.
Important tips for 2021/22 Fantasy Premier League Season
- Do not miss the deadline.
- Do not waste money on the bench
- Avoid defensive midfielders
- Don’t waste transfers on low impact players
- Stick to your squad, even if it is not going well, they’ll give you returns, don’t panic buy fancy players by taking hits
2021/22 FPL Season Guide Summary
An FPL season is a marathon not a sprint – 38 Gameweeks spread typically across nine months. We all enjoy immediate rewards and to be doing well at something right from the start, but it’s important to take a long-term view with almost every decision in FPL. If you have a bad Gameweek and your response is to ‘fix’ your team with short-sighted moves, you can quickly begin to build a psychological and points hole for yourself. For instance, if you make an impulsive double transfer for a hit – which in reality is a sideways move – then you’ve essentially waste one precious FT and four precious points. If this is followed by another bad Gameweek, you’re just going to get more aggravated and be more likely to take subsequent hits in a vicious spiral of ‘rage transfers’. Your patience is very important in this case, use the FT very cautiously. Good luck to a wonderful FPL season ahead.
