FPL GW 33 Review & GW 34 Plans

**6th May Update with Triple Gameweek announcement**

Please note that since I wrote the article below, news of an unprecedented Triple Gameweek for Manchester United has broken. You can see Ben Crellin’s latest Fixture Ticker here:

You can also review 3 more Wildcard drafts that I have made since this news on my Tweet here (do please still read the article and strategies below as the main discussion has stil remained the same and my thought process outlined in this article has not changed with the news:

Points: 60 points (-4 points) + GW rank: 370k

Apologies for not publishing a team reveal in GW 32 and 33. Thank you to everyone who reached out directly to send me messages of support whilst I’ve been dealing with some personal issues. In case you missed my cup run, I was finally knocked out of the FPL Cup in my 13th round in GW 29 (final 1,024 managers). This was a huge improvement from my prior record of 7 consecutive wins.

Happy with a green arrow bringing me closer to the Top 100k target I have. I was glad to have picked Salah (18 points) as my captain because I did toy with the idea of captaining Bruno Fernandes who only got 3 points all out. I did Aubameyang to Salah in GW 32. I then took a -4 in GW 33 to turn Dias and Raphinha into AlexanderArnold and Martinelli. They combined for the 3 points which made it a -1 point hit overall as I could not have fielded 11 players without them.

I was extremely pleased with Johnstone who managed to get a 6 point return despite conceding 2 goals against Aston Villa. The remaining assets who helped me towards this green arrow this week were Rudiger (8 points), Watkins (5 points) and last but not least Iheanacho (12 points). I just wanted to say, great job to those who went against the premium captaincy and opted for Iheanacho vs Crystal Palace this GW.

My overall rank improved from 127k to 112k (12% increase).

Overall Rank going into FPL GW 34

I am now just 6 points outside the Top 100k (a personal goal I strive for every season).

The all elusive consecutive Top 10k finish is looking impossible to achieve whilst I am 96 points behind with 5 GWs to go! Perhaps a more realistic stretch target for the season is the Top 50k (38 points behind right now).

FPL Blank Gameweek (36) and Double Gameweek (35)

We are entering the business end of the season with 5 GWs to go. The majority of managers have used all of their chips now. There is a handful of us with either their second WC or FH, still burning a hole in their pocket. I’ve even seen the odd BB or TC for some FPL managers.

Ben Crellin has shared the ticker below that he predicts is 70% likely to happen. This is not set in stone and could end up not happening at all! Fingers crossed it is officially announced before the GW 34 deadline so managers can take the fixture schedule into account when making their moves this week. It would not surprise me if they troll us again and announce it at 18:31 on Friday 30th April as soon as the GW 34 deadline passes.

Those who still have their WC plus a BB or FH could do really well to chase the high upside of using the chips when up to 8 teams could have a DGW35. Those without a FH to navigate BGW 36, may want to be a little more cautious and not invest too deeply in the DGW 35 assets that do not have a fixture in BGW 36. If you only have a Free Hit left, the BGW 36 is the ideal time to use it in my opinion.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Leicester are the ones who could blank in DGW 36 but also have a DGW 35. Aston Villa and Everton are the two teams that could have a DGW35 and not blank in BGW 36. If these fixtures are confirmed that makes investing in these two teams a wise move. Crystal Palace has the best DGW 35 fixtures and also won’t blank in BGW 36 but can we trust assets from their team? Thus Southampton is the final team with a DGW35 and also no blank in BGW 36.

Some thoughts about this plus my chip strategy for the final 5 GWs and potential DGW 35+BGW 36

  • Last GW I ended up taking a -4 point hit to turn Dias and Raphinha into Trent and Martinelli.
  • The plan had been to use my 2nd WC in GW31 but I have limped over the line in the hopes of DGW 35 and BGW 36 becoming official.
  • I will not be using my WC this GW even if the fixtures are announced but would rather take a 1-week punt before a WC in GW 35.
  • When I WC, I will likely target at least 2 Everton assets as they are still fighting for a European spot in the league.
  • I will be captaining Kane and unless he was confirmed out of the fixture with a phantom injury there is no way I am looking to change that. I do think that Iheanacho and Lingard are both very viable captains this week for those that do not trust Spurs even with Sheffield United as their opposition.
  • If you fancy a shot at Pep Roulette then a Man City asset vs Crystal Palace is also extremely enticing but the fixture sits in between the semi-final Champion’s League matches vs PSG.
  • Not too pleased with Bruno, Salah and Trent all facing each other this week.

I believe there isn’t a one size fits all answer for the next set of BGWs and DGWs. It will predominantly depend on if you still have your FH, BB, TC and second Wildcard handy. If you only have a Free Hit left, I think the best GW is the BGW 36 as you can target teams in DGW 35, navigate their blanks and then still own them for the final two fixtures of the season.

Captain for FPL GW 34

My bus team has Kane as the current captain and I just simply cannot look past him or the very appealing fixture vs Sheffield United. I expect Tottenham to double down on their disappointment of losing the Carabao Cup final last weekend and attack these final 5 GWs of the season in an attempt to finish in a European spot in the league.

Son is a viable alternative captaincy to Kane but personally, I feel that Kane is an obvious and stand out option from the Spurs team. He is fighting till the bitter end against Mo Salah for the golden boot and is also leading the assists table too. If Kane was not going to play then Son is far more appealing playing upfront and taking over the penalty duties.

My shortlist of City players who I could buy this week for a 1-week pre-WC punt are Sterling, Mahrez or Foden (cannot afford De Bruyne). I already own Gundogan who will be sold on my GW 35 wildcard too. However, the lack of guaranteed minutes means I would not feel too confident giving any of the City lads the captaincy armband.

Outside of Spurs and Man City, the two players that appeal to me most as captaincy contenders for GW 34 are Iheanacho and Lingard.

I’ve included the Opta Stats from Fantasy Football Hub for Kane, Son, Iheanacho and Lingard. In case you wanted to have a look at all four of the players, I like the most for captaincy this week.

Updated Watchlist for FPL GW 34:

(Bold names are new this week)

I will maintain an updated Watchlist in this section. I have identified players that I want to buy for my own team. I will also be listing which players are on the chopping blocks in favour of these players on the watchlist.

Goalkeepers: Mendy

Out-list: Johnstone

Defenders: Dallas, Castagne, Maguire

Out-list: Dunk

Midfielders: Mahrez, Foden, Sterling, Bale, Zaha, Raphinha, Jota, Lingard

Out-list:

Forwards: Bamford, Wood

Out-list:

Players I’ve added/removed from my Watchlist ahead of FPL GW 34:

Bale, Mahrez, Foden, Sterling: all added to my watchlist as a potential 1 GW punt for Bruno in GW 34.

Dallas: added to my watchlist as I target the final stretch of appealing fixtures for Leeds

Bamford and Raphinha – added to my watchlist for the Leeds run of fixtures

Castagne: added to the watchlist for Leicester’s potential DGW 35.

Zaha: added to my watchlist for the potential Crystal Palace DGW 35.

Wood: added to my watchlist as Burnley have decent fixtures till the end of the season and how could I not be tempted by hat trick hero Wood.

Johnstone– added to my out-list as he has worse fixtures than Areola when I WC in GW 35

Dunk– added to my out-list for a swap to Dallas.

Removed

Aubameyang: removed from out-list as I sold him for Salah in GW 32.

Watkins: removed from out-list for now as he could have a DGW35 and not blank in BGW 36.

Leno– removed from my watchlist and won’t be going near him

Odegaard and Saka: removed from watchlist

Holding: – removed from my watchlist

Neto: removed from watchlist

Philips: removed from my watchlist

Trent: removed from my watchlist as I signed him in GW 33.

Azpilecuta: removed from watchlist as I signed Rudiger instead

Lacazette, Iheanacho, Vardy, Aguero, Jesus – all removed from my watchlist

These are the variety of options I am going to decide between:

  1. Bruno Fernandes to any of Sterling, Mahrez, Foden or Bale (lose £0.5m value before buying back on WC 35)
  2. Watkins to Bamford (buy Watkins back on WC 35)
  3. Trent to Castagne (buy Trent back on WC 35)
  4. Gundogan to Raphinha (if Gundo looks unlikely to play and Raphinha is fully fit)

I am most likely to do move #1 or #4 above. I will be keeping an eye on the minutes of the Man City midfielders in the Champion’s League before making any decisions. I’ve included all of these options so you can my thought process. With so many options available I have paralysis of choice.

GW35

  1. I will WC in 35 whether there is a DGW or not. If the DGW 35 and BGW 36 is announced then I can build a team that will be able to navigate through the blank without a Free Hit too. I will likely have some Everton and Aston Villa assets plus be considering Crystal Palace options. Keep your eyes peeled for the team reveal and strategy article in GW 35 to see my WC team.

*Pre-Deadline Changes to my FPL Team*

I may make some late changes nearer the deadline but won’t have time to update the article. As such I have included some ideas of what these changes may be in the article above so that you can see the thinking behind my decision-making process.

l look forward to hearing your thoughts & discussing your transfers in the lead up to the Gameweek 34 deadline at 18:30 GMT on Friday April 30th.
