Double Gameweek 19 Review

Points: 119 points (-8 points) + Gameweek rank: 227k

I am very happy with my DGW19 team overall. Although my Bench Boost only managed to get 7 points, I am happy to have got it out of the way so I can focus on a strong XI going forwards.

Also if I had not been using BB then I would have played Bamford in my starting XI and owned Martial instead of Antonio. I took a -8 to make these transfers: Son > KDB, Martial > Antonio & Johnson > Cancelo.

I would be 17 points better off had I gone for Stones instead of Cancelo but we move forwards from here. My overall rank increased from 325k to 202k. This is my highest OR so far this season in my hunt for a consecutive Top 10k finish.

Overall Rank

I am now 23 points away from the Top 100k (a personal goal I strive for every season). In summary, I am 15 points closer than I was pre GW19 (still feeling gutted about Cancelo instead of Stones with the 19 point difference)!

I feel confident of achieving this by the end of the season but the all elusive consecutive Top 10k finish is looking difficult to achieve whilst I am still 80 points behind! Perhaps a more realistic stretch target for the season is the Top 50k (43 points behind right now).

Navigating future Blank (BGW29) and Double Gameweeks (DGW26 & more)

With the Blank and Double Gameweeks over, we can return to some normality in the medium term. Manchester City and Aston Villa have multiple yet to be scheduled fixtures.

Spurs are also are highly likely to have the best fixtures in the only remaining large Double Gameweek of the season in Gameweek 26.

We are expecting up to 4 more Double Gameweeks but only the one large one remains in Gameweek 26. This will correspond with the Blank Gameweek in 29 due to the teams who qualify for the FA Cup Quarter Finals.

As Fulham’s lost in the FA Cup 4th round, there is a chance that both Leeds and Fulham are now prime candidates to be the only teams who will play twice in DGW26 and also once in BGW29.

Some thoughts about this plus my revised approach to DGW26 and BGW29

  • I have 3 different transfer plans (see below for these – my priority is City, Spurs and Aston Villa players with my Free Transfers leading up to GW24)
  • With my BB out of the way, I can begin downgrading the value on my bench for the rest of the season.
  • I was planning on using the second Wildcard in Gameweek 25 once we’ve been given the fixtures for DGW26 and corresponding blanks in BGW 29.
  • However, I now intend on using FTs to prepare for DGW26 and BGW29 with my second Wildcard being triggered around GW30/31 to prepare for the final stretch of the season.
  • I’m still eager to use Triple Captain in Gameweek 26 (on Son or Kane, Spurs will have the two best DGW26 fixtures)
  • I will aim to have 2 FTs in GW24 and all my moves prior to then are focused on Man City (likely to have 3 DGWs 24, 26, 27) and Tottenham players (will have the best DGW26 fixtures and my TC options).

I believe there isn’t a one size fits all answer for the next set of BGWs and DGWs. It will predominantly depend on if you still have your FH, BB, TC and second Wildcard handy.

Captain for FPL Gameweek 20

I intend on keeping my captain as Bruno Fernandes for the GW20 home fixture vs Sheffield United. Manchester United are averaging more Big Chances per game than every team in the Premier League except for Manchester City.

It is worth bearing in mind that Sheffield United have tightened up at the back since Gameweek 13 (only Spurs have put more than 2 goals past them in this period). However Manchester United’s last 3 games vs Sheffield United have all been high scoring and I would expect more of the same this week (3-2, 3-0 and 3-3).

Bruno is currently averaging the most shots in the Premier League with a high percentage being Big Chances from Shots in the Box. Bruno isn’t just averaging the highest xG but he has the 3rd highest xA too.

Fantastic underlying numbers and now the highest goalscorer in the Premier League since his arrival at Manchester United a year ago. The FFH Predicted Points Tool has Bruno at 1st for GW20 (7.4 projected points) and also between GW20-23 (24.1 projected points)

New Watchlist (will be updated weekly)

(Bold names are new this week)

Going forwards I will maintain an updated Watchlist in this section. I have identified players that I want to buy for my own team over the next 5 GWs. I will also be listing which players are on the chopping blocks in favour of these players on the watchlist.

My potential transfers every GW will be based on those in my Watchlist and I will be updating the list every GW.

Goalkeepers

Martinez – Villa have some good fixtures and multiple DGWs incoming.

Out-list: Johnstone, McCarthy – could sell either of them, Johnstone was in my GW16 WC purely for BB (that fared well didn’t it)

Defenders

Chilwell, Shaw, Mitchell

I’m interested in seeing the new manager bounce at Chelsea with fantastic incoming fixtures for Chilwell.

United have great fixtures and Shaw has been an exciting attacking force.

Mitchell has won his place back ahead of PVA and at £3.9m will be a solid enabler.

Out-list: Robertson – His underlying attacking stats are still the best of all the defenders but he costs close to £7.5m and Liverpool have tough fixtures.

Midfielders

Son, Gundogan, Grealish

Son is in the form of his career and Tottenham will have the best DGW26 fixtures making him a TC option.

Gundogan for the next 3 GWs at just £5.5m is a fantastic De Bruyne replacement.

Grealish is on 4 yellow cards and one more in the next 2 matches earns him a suspension. After that, he has multiple DGWs to play and Villa is an attacking force this year.

Out-list: De Bruyne, Soucek, Raphinha, Salah

KDB is injured for 4-6 weeks.

Soucek appears to be playing much deeper with the return of Antonio and only possible returns will come from a header in a set-piece (also was brought in on WC16 for the BB19 strategy).

Raphinha is in my starting XI this week but is potentially on the chopping blocks in the near future as he is always one of the first to be subbed out for Leeds.

I have kept Salah and he scored 2 goals vs Man United in the FA Cup. He is on this list as I want to see Liverpool start scoring more to justify the hefty investment.

Forwards

Kane, CalvertLewin, Watkins, Werner

Kane is a must have for the DGW26 fixtures so I am working my towards owning both him and Son.

CalvertLewin finally has the full supporting cast around him to help him return to goalscoring form. Everton may have 2 DGWs in the next month or so.

Watkins is interesting due to Villa’s attacking numbers and upcoming DGWs.

Werner is here just to keep an eye on and see how the new manager bounce at Chelsea impacts him.

Out-list: Rodrigo

Rodrigo is always the first Leeds player to be substituted and is playing reverse out of position in midfield despite being listed as a forward. He was also only in my team as an enabler in the WC16 for BB19 strategy (before Leeds lost their DGW).

These are the 3 options I am going to decide between tomorrow:

  1. KDB to Gundogan (most likely move as it frees up funds for future plans)
  2. KDB to Son (can deliver vs Liverpool but I’d rather upgrade Soucek to Son with the extra money from downgrading KDB to Gundogan in GW20)
  3. De Bruyne to Grealish (but he has 4 yellow cards and will be suspended for 1 match if he gets another one in the next 2 matches)

I am most likely to go with option #1 or #2.

If I go for Option 1 then my most likely moves in GW21 will be to either upgrade Soucek to Son or Rodrigo to Kane. I would like to own both of Son and Kane by the time DGW26 comes around.
