The 2019/2020 season of the Premier League is within touching distance, now seems the right time to analyse and select the right man to guard the net between your sticks.
FPL bonus point system for keepers
Just like outfield players, goalies also have a customized points and bonus structure. Here is everything you need to know explained in a nutshell.
- Goalkeepers are awarded 1 point if they start/ play less than 60 minutes. (Let us consider the appearance points as n)
- n+1 points if they play a game for more than 60 minutes
- n+3 points if they a assist a goal
- n+6 if they score a goal.
- They are also awarded 1 point for every 3 saves they make (i.e n+1 for every 3 saves)
- They are awarded with a n+5 for every penalty they save.
- They can earn 1, 2 or points in bonus, if they have a really good game when compared to the outfield players.
- Goalkeepers LOSE n-1 point for every two goals they concede.
- They LOSE n-1 point for a yellow card, and n-3 for a RED.
How to select your keeper
An analysis based on the 2018/19 season
The strategy for selecting goalkeepers in FPL very simple, it usually forms two paths. Players tend to have a premium/first choice goalkeeper with a cheap bench warmer or select 2 budget friendly goalkeeping options that will rotate well and provide fixture friendly choice. So, to understand things in a better way, we have collected some stats to help select your man in the gloves.
Teams like Bournemouth (managed by Eddie Howe) and Southampton ( managed by Ralph Hasenhüttl) have relatively high uncertainty surrounding their number one choice. A close watch of analysis of respective teams pre-seasons will help understand the managers choices.
With three teams getting newly promoted, we can split the other 15 FPL Shot stoppers into two major categories based on previous season statistics.
- Premium T
- Alisson (Liverpool)
- Ederson (Man City)
- Kepa (Chelsea)
- De Gea (Man Utd)
- Lloris (Spurs)
- Budget Friendly
- All the First Choice and Reserve Goalkeepers will fall into this category. The minimum price of a Goalkeeper in this category is £ 4.5m
With the way Man City and Liverpool performed last season, It is no surprise that Alisson and Ederson lead the way with most both most clean sheets and per games tallies.
Goal keepers 2019/2020
If you are thinking about going down route one (1 Premium+ 1 Budget Friendly), all stats point towards the Brazilian number one Alisson at £6.0m
The Brazilian has been a phenomenon since he joined Liverpool, he managed to keep 21 clean sheets and won the golden glove. But, unfortunately for us FPL managers he plays for Liverpool.
As we all know each manager is only allowed to pick three players from the same team, with the fast and high scoring way Liverpool are playing would you really want to use one spot for their shot stopper?
Ederson: £6.0m
The Brazilian number two comes in at a close second to Alisson. But, personally I prefer Ederson, because Man City have high performance levels and he is the first name on the team sheet. Ederson added with anyone from Liverpool’s back four, is great way to earn high number of points.
David De Gea: £5.5m
The Spanish Shot stopper still remains a top choice even after the dip in form he had last season. But, with the air of uncertainty around Man United’s defense, his high price and tough fixture list. It is advisable avoid him and invest in other areas.
Tottenham’s Lloris and Chelsea’s alleged manager Kepa fall into the same category, both of them all fantastic shot stoppers. But, the odd mistake in them and they both cost £5.5m
Example: Lloris error at Ainfield had a huge say on the title race.
Buget Friendly Keepers:
Fabianski: £5.0m
The 34 year old polish goalkeeper is one of the most under rated goalkeeper in the modern era. His consistence over the last few years, playing for mid table premier league sides has been really good. Fabianski and West Ham only managed to keep 7 clean sheets last season but the Polish cat earned most of his points through saves.
Jordan Pickford: £5.5m
England’s first choice keeper had a mixed season last year. Including his error leading to a really bad goal at Anfield. But, something seemed to click for him, during the last phase of the season. Jordan Pickford is a confirm starter under Marco Silva. Pickford is one of the best penalty stoppers of the league. He was one of the only three keepers to have made more than 1 penalty save in the previous campaign.
Ben Foster: £5.0m
The big Englishmen of Watford had a mixed season last year. Even though his work between the sticks was incredible, Watford kept on conceding too many goals. If they get their defense right, there is a lot of potential this season.
Between Pope , Guaita and Schmeichel. They are considered to be good keepers, but none of them have produced extra ordinary performances. They all cost the same £5.0m
But, keep an eye on Dubravka , also cost the same price £ 5.0m , he can be considered a serious candidate based on previous campaign performance. Dubravka established himself as the Tyne’s number one, by keeping 11 clean sheets. But, like every other window if Newcastle don’t spend money he is in for another rough year.
Coming in hot from the Championship
By the end of the 2018/2019 championship season, Norwich, Sheffield United and Aston Villa were the sides that got promoted. This has given us three new choices and a potential Neil Etheridge replacement. The three keepers coming up from the Championship would most probably be valued around the 4.5m price range, making them affordable options for managers.
Tim Krul- Norwich
The former Newcastle United goalkeeper is back with Aston Villa. Krul has conceded 57 goals during the 2018 campaign, only keeping 13 clean sheets. Norwich won promotion by playing an attacking style of play that might make it difficult for him to keep clean sheets. So, save points are his best bet.
Dean Henderson- Sheffield United
By far the most exciting keeper in the budget friendly section. This Man United and England under 21’s loaned player has turned quite a few heads by keeping 21 clean sheets from the 46 games, only conceding 41 goals throughout the season. As expected Sheffield and Man United have made deal for him to be loaned, making him the number one choice for Chris Wilder.
Aston Villa
With Aston Villa this season we might have another Southampton situation. With no set number 1, the side conceded 61 goals and managed to keep only 13 clean sheets. If you are looking to go down route 2 ( two rotating budget friendly keepers), we would suggest you to steer clear of Villa Park this season.
If you are poor like me and are looking to save more money here are a keepers in the 4.0m range.
Stekelenburg- Everton
Woodman- Newcastle
McGovern- Norwich
Norris-Wolves
But, keep an eye out for Button-Brighton he has a good chance of playing, and will save you the extra 0.5 Million
Conclusion
Thank You! for taking some time of your busy day to read our analysis on goalkeepers. I would personally choose Ederson (Premium) and Button (Budget Friendly) and go down route one.
