GW 23 Review & DGW 24 Plans

Points: 71 points + GW rank: 1.8m

I beat my 7th opponent in the FPL Cup (71 vs 61 points). I was very pleased with Gundogan (13 points), Son (10 points), Justin (9 points), Salah (7 points) Coufal, Bamford and Raphinha (all with 6 points).

It feels like it has been months since I had my captain return points. In fact, I took a look and it was KDB in DGW19 which feels like a very long time ago indeed! As such, I have been stagnating within the same rank bracket since GW19 (150k-200k). I got a very small green arrow this GW.

Annoyingly I seem to be getting the captaincy wrong every single GW. I can only dream of where my rank would be had I not missed so many captains this season.

My overall rank went from 185k to 174k.

Overall Rank going into FPL DGW 24

I am now 21 points away from the Top 100k (a personal goal I strive for every season). I cannot wait for the day my Captain earns some points again!

I feel confident of achieving this by the end of the season but the all elusive consecutive Top 10k finish is looking difficult to achieve whilst I am still 86 points behind! Perhaps a more realistic stretch target for the season is the Top 50k (44 points behind right now).

Reassessing the landscape – planning for the next Double Gameweeks & Blank Gameweeks (DGW 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and BGW29)

We are about to enter the most fun part of any FPL season. DGW 24 starts tomorrow and will likely be followed by DGWs through till GW27. Manchester City, Everton, Fulham and Burnely all have 2 fixtures in DGW 24. Southampton and Leeds have 2 fixtures each in DGW 25.

Here is the update for BGW 29 implications based on the FA Cup 5th Round results.

The next 6 GWs including the likely DGW 26, 27, 28 fixtures can be seen in this longer-term view below. I am focusing on Aston Villa, Everton, Southampton and Tottenham players for this period. There is a small chance that Southampton could have 3 consecutive DGWs between DGW25 -27.

They will be announced between DGW 24 and 26.

Some thoughts about this plus my revised approach to DGW24, 25, 26 & 27 + BGW29 & BGW33

  • I succeeded in my plan to have 2FT ahead of DGW 24 but I have no idea what to do with DCL now ruled out the first of the two matches.
  • I intend on using the majority of my FTs between DGW 24 and BGW 29 on players from teams who are likely to have DGW 26 but not blank in BGW 29 (I used FH in BGW 18).
  • I intend on using FTs to prepare for FPL DGW 24 – 28 + BGW 29 with my second Wildcard being triggered around GW 30/31 to prepare for the final stretch of the season.
  • I’m still eager to use Triple Captain in DGW 26 (on Kane or Son, Spurs will have the two best DGW 26 fixtures)
  • I have thought about TC on Gundogan this DGW 24 but I don’t think I will pull that trigger.

I believe there isn’t a one size fits all answer for the next set of BGWs and DGWs. It will predominantly depend on if you still have your FH, BB, TC and second Wildcard handy.

Captain for FPL DGW 24

I cannot look past a Man City midfielder for their DGW 24 fixtures vs Spurs and Everton. Gundogan will be my captain choice for the DGW.

Looking at the last 5 years of data for Gundogan at Man City, it is clear his role has completely changed. His shot conversion is at 28% this season due to a much higher % of his shots coming from the box (72% vs 39% last year).

His xG per shot is also nearly double the xG per shot of his prior 4 years. He’s scoring from every 5 shots as opposed to every 10 shots previously.

I’ve included the Opta Stats from Fantasy Football Hub for Sterling too incase you own him and will have the luxury choice of captaining him over Gundogan (unlike me)!

The FFH Predicted Points Tool has Gundogan on 8.6 points in DGW 24 (2nd behind only Sterling’s 10.5 projected points).

The FFH Predicted Points Tool has Sterling on 10.5 points in DGW 24.

Updated Watchlist for FPL DGW 24:

(Bold names are new this week)

I will maintain an updated Watchlist in this section. I have identified players that I want to buy for my own team over the next 5 GWs. I will also be listing which players are on the chopping blocks in favour of these players on the watchlist.

Goalkeepers: Martinez, Areola

Out-list: Johnstone

Defenders: Konsa, Targett, Dallas, Mee, Lowton, Maguire, Digne, Rudiger.

Out-list: Justin

Midfielders: Lookman, Grealish, Barnes, Maddison

Out-list: None

Forwards: Ings, Kane, Watkins, Werner, Lacazette

Out-list: Rodrigo, Antonio

Players I’ve removed/added to my Watchlist ahead of FPL DGW 24:

Added

Antonio– added to my outlist as he will make way for Ings or Kane

Justin added to the out-list after the horrible news that he has an ACL injury!

Konsa/ Targett – added to watchlist as I want Villa defensive coverage going into their DGWs and they are likely to not blank in BGW 29.

Dallas – Once I sell Rodrigo this GW, I will have a 3rd Leeds spot and would like Dallas for DGW 25 and they will also not blank in BGW 29 which I want ot navigate without a FH.

Removed

McCarthy- was on my out-list but he has a DGW 25 and may have 3 consecutive DGWs coming up.

Son – was on my out-list but with Kane back and juicy DGW 26 fixtures he is not going anywhere.

Robertson – was on my out-list but already been sold for Mee in GW 23

Pope – removed from watchlist as I don’t want to spend the extra £1m on him as it will block me from getting Kane in DGW 26 and he doesn’t play in BGW 29 either.

Mee– removed from watchlist as my transfer last GW was Robertson to Mee.

CalvertLewin – removed from watchlist as he will miss the Fulham game and I do not want him just for the 2nd fixture vs Man City.

Saka – removed from the watchlist, I don’t want an Arsenal player and they have difficult fixtures.

These are the 2 options I am going to decide between tomorrow:

  1. Rodrigo to Watkins and save 1FT to have 2FT going into DGW 25
  2. Same as #1 but also use the 2nd FT on Johnstone to Areola
  3. Same as #1 but also use the 2nd FT on Justin to Lowton

In DGW25 with 1-2FT I will be looking at the following moves:

  • Antonio to Ings (DGW25) or Kane (my TC option in DGW 26)
  • Justin to Dallas

In DGW26:

  1. Mee to Konsa or Targett

I am most likely to only use 1FT in DGW 24 so I can go into DGW 25 with 2FT and lots of flexibility in my next moves. I also hope that between GW24-26 we hear definitive news regarding DGW 26 fixtures and get confirmation of whether Spurs vs Villa will be moved to BGW 29.
